This is my YouTube channel. If you clicked on that link you'll notice I have quite a few Men of War videos.
This is a YouTube search for Men of War. You may notice some of my videos, specifically these two in the spoiler (I can't figure out how to link them without the forums inlining the videos):
You may also notice a bunch by some PrinceOfMacedon dude, a couple from some Attila16 dude, and a random smattering of other videos.
Is there any rhyme or reason in terms of how YouTube picks these videos? I've got a crapton that all start with "Men of War" and have the "Men of War" tag but apparently YouTube really likes those two videos of mine because they're the only ones that have ever shown up on the first page of searches. These two videos don't have the most views or the most comments and I don't think they have the highest ratings and they're not the newest or the oldest or the shortest or longest. As far as I can tell they haven't been embedded more or less than any other video. The original video filenames are nondescript and everything's got more or less the same tags.
Anyone have any idea?
I have a feeling this is some sort of closely guarded algorithm and anyone who figures it out one day is instantly attacked and killed by ninjas, but it's just weird seeing 2 random videos out of all of mine getting a bunch of anomalous hits.
I'm not sure about Google's ranking algorithm, but to link a Youtube video without embedding it you use vidurl instead of url.

Their ranking system is interesting. If you search for "BuTube", my test of it shows up as one of the top results (it was the only top result), even though it wasn't the first and definitely not one of the most viewed.
There's probably some weighting for other reasons they do in the background, otherwise tag spammers would be able to always tag their way to a top result instead of just "sometimes"
Haven't looked into it but it may use similar ranking methods to google. If so then it is partly related to 'on page' optimisation - keywords in title, tags and description - and partly in the amount of links which point to that videos page from external sources.
I could check the comparative number of inbound links from videos that do and don't rank when I'm on my PC later.
In any case it's an interesting question and I'm going to investigate further.
