In all likelyhood you'll want to spend some time as all of the classes, save maybe Force.
Any abilities unlocked by leveling a type can be equipped regardless of your current type. So leveling multiple types will give you a larger pool to choose from.
If it's UMD you get a code, if it's off PSN you're good to go. The code is tied to your PSN account to authorize online, so by buying it off PSN you've already linked it.

Does PSP2 come with a CD-key or anything for the online multi? How does it work?
Looks like a download code on the back of the manual, that you use on the PS Store.
And as I found out last night, if you download the game from PSN, it'll automatically register your Little Wing license. I was having connection issues and thought it was because I didn't register my license, only to turn out that I had to delete and re-create my PSP's wireless settings for some unknown reason.
Actually it's just that Sega's servers are still really crappy. I created a new static IP for the PSP and I still get problems with it loading the Terms of Use. So if that's where you keep getting errors then you're fine. It's Sega.

That's exactly where I was getting issues. Well then, I blame SEGA. Which is easy to do since I'm still blaming them for fucking up the Dreamcast...
From an outsider looking in perspective (I've never played a Phantasy Star game before) I'm a little perplexed by melee weapons. Why, precisely, would I ever want to get that close to a boss? My experiences with De Ragan suggest that's a recipe for getting maimed!
I only have experience with PSO, but hunters (melee guys) usually have the highest defense, so they're able to take a few hits. Also, most bosses had some kind of area/long-range attack to keep any character class on their feet.
Also, in the PSO days MST only affected the strength of your magic. Was it changed in PSU (and PS Portable) to magic defense? That's kind of weird.
MST is magic DEF, TEC is magic offense.
Having high DEF in this game is really not great, at best it changes stuff from 1 shotting you to 2 shotting, or 2 shotting to 3 shotting. Super high EVA is suprisingly awesome, but casts aren't capable of reaching it. You want to Melee because melee weapons lay down huge numbers when using them to break chains with a PA. Twin handguns are the best for building chains, at least offline.

Any optimizations recommendations for a Cast Ranger?
I've enjoyed the demo, but is there any chance on single player being fun for long?
My university's wireless security doesn't allow handhelds online.
And I don't even know another person with a PSP.
Have you played any PSO/PSU before? If so, you know what the game is all about - finding rare shit. I played most of the PSOs and PSUs in single player mode since getting online with strangers was always a lesson in frustration, but they were always fun to a point.
I always have fun with these games, but I'm an avid Phantasy Star fan. I know I really didn't answer your question, but how about this: If you liked the demo, would you like doing what you did in the demo over and over and over again with different maps, monsters, and possible awesome items?

Actually I'm pretty sure ATA being calculated into Ranged damage is a rather new development in PSP2, so you couldn't be blamed for not knowing.
In any case, for single player Ranger I suggest using Rifles for the most part, especially early on when you won't have easy access to Lasers or Grenades.
For taking out normal enemies, just taking a couple normal shots and following it with a charged shot will cause a fairly significant increase in damage. For grunt killing in single player, even a chain 3-5 is noticable.
For multiplayer I'd keep some twin handguns onhand. While the rifle will still be more than enough for normal enemies, twin handgun is the fastest ranged method to raise the chain count(technically mechgun is faster, but twin handguns can be fire regularly for longer periods of time without actively trying to stagger your mechgun fire)
It's also worth noting that during a chain break the number will flash for a couple seconds, and during that time any charged shots you do will receive the damage bonus, so when the party is ready to break the chain everyone should be ready to hit all at once. Communication helps here.
I really need to sit back down with this, but I've been overwhelmed with releases lately. I'll probably hop on this weekend though, my Vanguard is level 17 right now.
ACC is worth 4points of ATK on ranged weapons that dont use the the other stats.
Cast ranger is pretty awesome, but rangers are pretty bad in this game early imo. I'd go braver first and stop at level 2, 15, or 25 for the +PP skills. Casts have the lowest PP but the highest regen, so +PP are sick for them since giving them +30pp not only increases their pool, but their regen as well because the regen is a % of their pool. Female casts are better because they have +10pp which is pretty awesome. I'm a huge min/maxer, but I drew the line at my characters gender.
Also, Bravers are so much better at soloing with traps. Rangers are insanely awesome in a group though. Grab a spread needle with lvl 2 stun and you are the MVP of the party. Problem with cast braver is that they cant hit the EVP thresholds where you can dodge all attacks all the time so they end up being kinda bad at everything. Casts make the best hunters and rangers though.
TLDR get braver to lvl 2 first just for the +10pp, it takes 10 mins and its completely worth it.
The four types are Hunter, Ranger, Force, and Vanguard. Is a braver a Vanguard?
Also Rifles seem to do sub-par damage, purely due to their slowness in this game I'm noticing. Handgun/Claw and Dual Pistols has yielded better results from the firing rate. Is it just Triangle attacks that gain damage from a higher Chain, or any attack?

my Cast is a Female because right now she's using that freaky gothic lolita setup, and later on she'll be Miku Hatsune.
DON'T JUDGE ME
Anyway, my main character is a Human Vanguard, because traps are awesome and I played a Protranser in PSP1 pretty much all the time.
Also, it's worth noting that due to the type extend setup if you run a Cast Vanguard you can give him whatever guns and pretty much still play him like a Ranger because he'll still have respectable ATA.
EDIT: Early on, that is. Just to type level Vanguard a bit to get those delicious +PP abilities.
Also yeah, Braver was the name for Vanguard in the JP version. I still like Braver better even if it's functionally a nonsense word in this sense.

Rifles are pretty awful early. Theyre much better late, but mostly for bosses and for soloing insane stuff.
I've been on the fence about this game; I wasn't particularly thrilled playing the demo. But any series that's gonna throw this fella in, well.
How can I not give it a second consideration?
I dunno man. The game's premise is pretty simple, kill dudes, get rare drops, repeat. The demo has that. The weapons suck in the demo and there isn't much variety, if that is your complain then I'd get it. If you don't like the killing and looting then well no reason to buy this.
Man the story is so dumb. It's like Nier, except so much more cliche and anime. And I don't even mind anime! If I didn't have to play through it to unlock..... well EVERYTHING, I wouldn't even bother.

Ugh, tell me about it. Speaking of which, how the toss do you get the True Ending or whatever? I've probably already missed my chance. Can you import the same character into a new run to have another shot at it?

If it's anything like PSP1 you need to pamper the crap out of Emilia, but I don't know for sure. I probably screwed it up already because I was trying to skip through a conversation and said something mean to her.
I didn't even know there was a true ending. I thought it would be like PS0 and just have character endings or something. I think you're bound to screw up on some dialogue choices because sometimes no answer seems right. Like when Ursula shows up. What do you think of the captain?
>He's an idiot.
>He tries his best.
Now what the hell do you say here? Do you openly say the captain sucks and hope his laid-back attitude accepts it? Or do you say he tries his best and risk making Ursula angry? The only way to tell is to try something and then reload if needed. I think I've made the wrong choice with Emilia twice, but I did get a title for making her my friend and I got a poster. So maybe the requirements are a little less strict now? What I do is after every major event I go around to all the unique NPCs and see if they have something to say.

Well the PSP1 ending was 100% based on how nice you were to Vivienne.
I think I said some things that weren't strictly sunshine and puppydogs, but I probably felt was more practical, and I only got the "Normal" ending.
That meant I got a mediocre double saber with 30% fire instead of a mediocre double saber with 50% fire.
I have no idea about the details of the PSP2 ending, though.
EDIT: Then again a Hard mode unlocks after you beat the normal story mode, so maybe you have multiple chances to get the good ending.
I know it has to do with dialogue options, but it also apparently has to do with getting S ranks on story missions. I don't know if that means all or most.
If it requires all S ranks WELP...already failed that. I got a mere A on the one where you first get Tonni and Linna who BY THE WAY are creepy as fuck.
Okay guys, it doesn't really matter what ending you get. There's titles and wings for every ending. You'll get white for normal, black for bad, and crimson for good. To get the good ending you have to S rank every mission (I failed the traps one, I thought it would still be enemies killed) and make the best dialogue choices. There may be some room for mistakes, I'm not sure. There is a hard mode as well that you'll have to play through. It unlocks rare clothing or something. So I think we get at least two chances. Maybe every time you beat the story you're given the option to restart it?

Well that ship has definitely already sailed without me, then.
I think I got a C on that mission because the boss killed me by hitting me with his charge, and charging long enough that he hit me as I was getting up after the first hit.
Oh wait, hard mode seems to just be replaying story missions from a list? Damn.... okay now I don't know if it's possible to get all the wings and titles on one character. However the wings are just armor, so I'm going to say it might be possible to just use the storage box.
Take this with a grain of salt, but looking on gamefaqs (ugh) people are saying that replaying the story missions once you beat it does indeed let you attempt to get all 3 endings.
I had read from the PSP2 wiki that you can get all the endings on one character.
Currently got a level 15 Human Vanguard; favouring Swords, Twin Handguns, and Knuckles so far, with a bit of Tech Mag thrown in for heals and buffs, and Rifles to take things down at long range. Now all I need is a level 11+ Resta, and I can take on any role needed.

That said my Cast looks pretty bitching. Still not sure whether Ranger or Vanguard is the way to go, but for now I'll stick with Ranger I guess.
