Free Roaming Games (Like Prototype)

I am playing through Prototype for the first time right now. WoW.

That being said, I miss this kind of freedom. I enjoyed the GTA series but it feels a bit boxy and Prototype has a lot of fire but I can see it getting old fast.

Are there anymore free roaming games that have some depth AND are on the PC? I know the Spiderman and Hulk games are consoles.

Ah, free roaming. Sandbox games have quickly become my life blood. Quick list:

    Just Cause 1 + 2
GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, IV, Episodes from Liberty City
Assassin's Creed 1 + 2 (but you might as well pretend 2 doesn't exist on PC)
    The Saboteur
Mercenaries 2 (if you don't mind tossing $3 at a pisspoor game, just to blow stuff up and move about)
    Red Faction: Guerrilla
    Saints Row 2

I don't know if you just want any sandbox games, but a lot of RPGs are going into general sandbox territory. Even something like Mass Effect which offers a fairly linear experience, allows you to travel planet to planet on a whim, but there aren't any respawns happening.

Edit: Saboteur, SR 2 and JC 2 get special mention because they're super duper.

Edit: I need to plug Fallout 3, because I am obsessed with this game. I've started mentioning it everywhere. If you want a sandbox that can have brilliant moments and offers up sweet exploration, go for Fallout 3 GOTY edition.

That is a fantastic list, thank you.
I am packing my laptop full of games before a year long trip. Yay.

Why am I pretending AC2 doesn't exist on PC? Does it suck or is it just system heavy.

Lmao, totally forgot about the Elder Scroll Series, thanks.

As a side note, I even like games like Black And White. I don't like the horrible micromanagement but I did enjoy the open feel of play. Enjoyed that a lot. Not CIV/SIM style games though, I have had my share of simulation games.

Another tip of the hat to Just Cause 2. Has some issues, but it's probably still the best free roaming game available on PC right now.

Because Ubisoft hates you for daring to use a PC and they think you're a worthless pirate.

No, it's the Ubisoft DRM. Which requires you to have broadband access to its servers literally at all times, or the game boots you out.

Never recommended at any time, and especially not recommended if you're gaming on a laptop.

Or for that matter if you're leaving the country and will have to be accessing Ubisoft's servers from other locations, different countries have had issues.

Or heck, just for the fact that even then people often have problems connecting to the Ubisoft servers so that they can play because they're down for one reason or another.

All this, because Ubisoft demands it for a singleplayer game. Yeah.

EDIT: If you like free roaming RPG's, then the Fallout series is good. The older ones might have some interface bugbears, but in general are pretty awesome, and available from GOG, DRM free. Fallout 3 is a different style of game, but definitely good in its own right, I enjoyed it.

Make sure you mod the heck out of Fallout 3 and Bethesda's other games. They're decent unmodded, but mods make them soooo much better.
    Isn't Darksiders kinda free-roam? It's coming out June 24.

In terms of modding the Bethesda games, I've found that almost any mod that isn't a simple re-texture (of which there are some great ones), or a visual upgrade (like Natural Environments for Oblivion), tend to completely destroy the spirit of the game. There isn't a single 'rebalance' mod for any of these games that I haven't found to be total shit, made by amateur "game designers" who don't actually have a clue about game balance or making something fun.

There are some great mods out there for Oblivion and FO3, and almost all the ones that aren't total piles of shit that destroy the spirit of how the game was meant to be played are visual in nature. A notable exception would be something like Real Time Settler for FO3, which adds a complete mini-game style system to the game, but doesn't effect the core game play at all.

Oh wait, the STALKER games are probably something you'd want to look into. Jim Rossignol from RPS did a pretty good writeup on STALKER and just why it's awesome:

STALKER: Call of Pripyat is the latest one in the series. You'll definitely want to head to the thread and ask around for mods and such. I could spend ages talking about it, but the OP in the thread has it pretty well covered:

Marts Mutant Mod for FO3 is basically a requirement, even if you don't own FO3. It's just that incredible. There are a lot of other good ones as well. It's just that there's a lot of junk mods out there because of how easy they are to make and upload. It's very much worth it just to spend a few hours looking through the mods available. It turns a good game into the greatest gaming experience of the decade.

There are parts of MMM I find cool (the new creatures for instance), other parts of it I think mess with the balance of the game too much. Luckily it's nice and modular, so you can just avoid the balance changing stuff.

I was speaking more specifically about mods like FOSS, which make me want to scream. They are 90% rubbish, and the 10% that they actually make better from the core game isn't worth the rest.

Though to be honest I wouldn't call S.T.A.L.K.E.R. a free roam game, all the big areas are sectioned off with load times and each one is literally fenced in many cases.

But yes get STALKER, it's still an awesome series regardless.

Just Cause 2 is great, it has sustained my interest well after the credit roll. Even the racing side missions are usually fun, and rarely frustrating.

Best part of The Saboteur, for me, was finding a way into Paris really, really early in the game. As soon as I was out of the linear tutorial parts, I made it my objective to reach la Tour Eiffel gleaming in the distance, beyond numerous checkpoints and one very large fence that I barely cleared with a leap from a nearby roof.

Paris looks damned good in black & white, and the ascent up the Eiffel Tower is in places an impressively dizzying experience.

Likewise, the best part of Fallout 3 was getting lost in some really dangerous parts of the Capital Wasteland, so early in the game that you have to sneak around in the dark and run away from anything larger than a raider. Low on stimpaks, drinking from vile water sources, sleeping in truly alarming places.
