RPGamer (full disclosure: I work there, but had nothing to do with making this video) got one of the Natsume booth folks to do a pretty good (and fairly amusing) walkthrough of the new stuff in Harvest Moon: A New Beginning.
any idea if anyone knows if the new game is more similar to the classic style of harvest moon games? I really really hated how different tale of two towns was compared to the typical harvest moon game.
From what I've seen, it's pretty typical Harvest Moon other than the customization stuff. What didn't you like about Two Towns? The two towns? The request board system?

Is it sad that I haven't played a Harvest Moon since the original on SNES? I loved that one though and I do have a DS (though at the moment I'm super addicted to Diablo 3). Is there a good DS title I should start with? The Rune Factory ones seem to have good endorsements.

The Rune Factory games are a lot more fantasy-oriented than regular Harvest Moon games. We're talking magic and swords and elves and fairies and so on. It also has a pretty emphasized dungeon crawler aspect to it as well, which is in many ways as important to the game as the farming is. Fortunately it's not particularly difficult.
I personally prefer it over the current installments of Harvest Moon, as I consider the art style to be much better than this over-cute direction they took with HM, and the dungeon and crafting system adds a lot of extra things to do in the game beyond farmgrind.

I'd go Harvest Moon DS or you can grab the Friends of Mineral Town games if you have a DS with the GBA slot. If you're going Rune Factory, I'd jump straight to 3. Otherwise the current crop of DS games are woefully skippable.

didn't really like the two towns system they were going for. from what I remember everything seemed very easy and different compared to what I was expecting from a typical harvest moon game. I remember being a little bit weirded out by how the wild areas between the towns functioned too.
it just didn't feel like much of a harvest moon game to me

I felt the same way. It just felt really really off.

Or the freezing bug in the 3DS version that Natsume made no effort to fix? Let's not forget that!
Well, that's what I didn't like about Two Towns, but having bugs just makes it more like other Harvest Moon releases!
The 64 version. THE 64 VERSION.
So many freezes.
At least it's not Harvest Moon DS. I got one of the early copies (I guess) that had the two lovely bugs associated with loading a game. Either the save file would get corrupted or it would simply freeze when it's loaded, which...basically amounted to the same thing. Have not managed to play a full year on the game despite three tries.
On a different note: Can we talk about Project Happiness in here? It's Wada, it's basically the same style of game, but it just doesn't have a name or anything yet. So far, it looks like it's going to be a storefront managing game for 3DS/Mobile. I'm kind of hoping that it starts looking a bit fuller-featured as it gets more work done on it.

Guess I have to get a 3DS sometime...
Unless you're importing I don't see it coming out before March or so.
Thus my future tense.
It basically looks like a slightly improved RF3 with a stable framerate and 4 person parties.
Another tidbit is that all the bosses have a human form and you can apparently marry them if the right conditions are met.
