My first ever Harvest Moon game was BtN and I was hooked from the first time I borrowed it from a friend. I never actually made it very far into the 2nd year because I always thought to restart and try a new way of making lots of money in game.
Having finally bought my own copy of the game (although at a stupidly high price) I plan to at least play through the first 3 years properly when I get the time.
The only thing I didn't like about the game was trying to marry one of the girls in town. It just seemed like such a drain on time that I rather spent digging in the mine or managing my farm.
I'm really liking Sunshine Islands thus far (a couple weeks in, been distracted). The minimap showing where everybody is for both the overall islands and just the smaller area is mostly great, although they still teleport around on screen transitions once the specified time passes. Luckily, the areas are small enough for that to not really matter too much. Also, the in-game notes about what people like and hate for gifts are great.
It does feel like there's much more of a stamina crunch at the start this time around, practically forcing you to go socialize since you just don't have the stamina to do more than water like, four or five fields. It's interesting (to me at least) that you can't give gifts either until you've raised them to at least 1 heart. I shipped a lot of basically garbage at the start since nobody wanted to accept my flowers. :?
I also discovered that you have infinite stamina in the tutorial, so I hoed practically half the farm for shits and giggles. It doesn't even make you eat the herbs he gives you. Free monies!
I do wish the game was zoomed out a little more, especially with running. It's like a flat out uncontrolled sprint. Also that you could remap buttons. I like using the stylus to talk to people from long range, but if I want to do that as I run past them, that would require a third hand for the D-Pad, B button, and stylus... and the stylus running is... frustrating, shall we say.
Oh wait, it doesn't actually say December. I thought the full interview had that. Pulled the link from elsewhere where people were bitching about a December release. Just says "brand new localization company." Okay, well, whatever. *shrug*
I'm happy to hear about a change in localization company. Harvest Moon 64 had some pretty egregious errors, and even FoMT had some rather noticeable mistakes.
So it turns out that the new Lufia game came out like RIGHT THE FUCK TODAY, so I ran over to Amazon to order it, and whadda'ya know, Rune Factory 3 popped up as part of the "you might also like..." group. Slated for November 9th, in fact.
Maaaaaaaan. I've been lamenting how shitty the Japanese VA industry has been the last few years with pop idols taking over fucking everything, then I see the Japanese cast for RF3 and it's like a who's who of the awesome VAs from 5 years ago.
So what is currently the go-to game for the DS? A cursory glance shows 4 regular games. HMDS sounds like a buggy mess, and Sunshine Islands is an updated version of sland Of Happiness with non shitty controls, so I guess it comes down to Sunshine or Grand Bazaar.
I left Rune Factory off the list because fighting in Harvest Moon seems totally wacked out to me, but I have an open mind if it really is the bee's knees.

Rune Factory 2 is great but my favorite is still HMDS Cute. It's the cream as far as I'm concerned.

I really like Sunshine Islands. The only thing that annoys me above and beyond the usual Harvest Moon gripes (system arcanae, boring villagers, etc) is that the upper level stuff of everything is stupidly expensive. Really stupidly expensive. Like it expects you to be in year 10 or beyond before you 'max out' your farm. It doesn't offer a whole ton above and beyond the vanilla Harvest Moon experience though, so maybe GB if you're looking for a new twist. Haven't played it though.
Grand Bazaar is neat but very weird and seems ridiculously limited in comparison to the other Harvest Moons. It's a nice change but Rune Factory shook up the formula better.
I vote down Sunshine Islands because the weather system is just too screwy and it's REALLY hard to tell who you've gotten sunstones from or where you're at in getting their stones. It's not bad but I still prefer HMDS.

Huh? What's hard about either of those? Do you mean the sun/water points for crops? And what's difficult about the sunstones? It's completely trivial and can be done or checked in literally 5 game days and then ignored.

Yes. They're annoying.

It CAN'T be checked. That's the point. And you have to do it 5 days in a row or you have to start again. And there's no way to tell where you were unless you keep written notes. AND you have to do it with everyone in the game plus their family stone.
It's a pain in the ass. It doesn't ruin the game but it's crazy annoying just like the runey system in RFF. The game is fabulous but those damn runeys just make you never want to play it again.

You know that the fairy at the statue thingy will tell you if there's anybody left to give you a Sunstone, right? I mean, fuck. I just did a circuit in Winter Year 1 for a week. Everybody taken care of at once. Easy peasy.

No, I don't. Nor do I know what "fairy at the statue thingy" means. I never got out of the first two weeks of Spring; I went back to Rune Factory 2, DETERMINED to finish it.
And it's hardly easy peasy, you have to give them their "really like" gifts for five days. Those are hard to get a hold of. I meabn it took YOU three seasons to get them.
I'm not saying the game is bad at all; it's definitely my number three of HM DS games. I just prefer HMDS and Rune Factory 2 over it.

Okay, so you're completely ignorant, completely fucking wrong, yet have a strong opinion. That clears things right up.
Any gift with a musical note counts. Small fish. Lumber. Chocolate. Gelatin. Flowers. Random ore. Eggs. The only problem case is Lily, whose cheapest thing is gold. It 'took me three seasons' because I didn't give a shit about Sunstones until I was bored of the mine in winter.

Wow. Sorry, I thought I was having a conversation with someone with an ounce of maturity. Never mind. You'll clearly be right no matter what happens.
It's not any gift with a musical note. It has to be 300 points worth or more and they have to be five days in a row. Clearly you don't know nearly as much about the game as you think despite the fact you're ready to call a jihad over the fact I like two games better then it.
I was considering RFF. Do unsell me and save me money.
It's a VERY good game but the Runey system is terribly terribly annoying. Go to Fogu, read the tips on that system in the forum, decide if you can't deal with it.

Dude. You have yet to say anything remotely correct. I'm right because they're immutable facts of the game. Imagine my side of it and somebody claiming completely outlandish things that aren't even close to right. "I've played the game for a couple hours! I am a master of its mechanics!" It has nothing to do with you liking other games. It has everything to do with you being 100% wrong in your claims about the mechanics of this one. Go read Gamefaqs or ANY INFORMATION SITE if you need further confirmation that you're crazy.
Now on to your latest ramblings. The 5 days in a row thing is patently wrong. For starters, Vaughn's only on the islands 2 days a week, so that would make it impossible to get his stone. It also literally takes about 3 minutes to test this and, there we go. You're confirmed wrong. Second, any gift that's worth 300 points gives a musical note, Captain Crazy. That's the first level above the null reaction. Takes what, 15 seconds to test?

It's 5 days in a row that they're available. And some sites say "no that's not true" some say "yes it is". Mine reset for one villager and not for another so I'm not taking any chances.
Musical note gifts are, as a rule, difficult to get. Thus the musical note.
Also, we're done talking. You're a massively unpleasant person and completely immature about this. I get that you didn;t find this system annoying at all and it was really easy for you. Congrats. So drop it.
When I saw the character's picture I thought "Holy shit is that Vaan from FF12" then I saw another character and thought "Holy shit is that Squall from FF8". Does anyone else see this? Also hell yes, towering pillar of carrots.

Maybe now you've learned to stop making random shit up, but since you still haven't bothered to even check what the musical note gifts are for the game, I doubt that.
Here you go, snuggles. http://faqs.ign.com/articles/104/1044014p1.html
Maybe one day, you'll bother to read it and some education will somehow find a way into your head.
It was a pleasure continuously proving you wrong! Let's do it again sometime!

Pushed back to December.
Lame jerkfaces.
MY MISTAKE
MAYBE.
As someone who's interested in the harvest moon games but never got a chance to play them should I check RF out?
Le sigh.
Augh, now I know what I'm doing with my free time.
