(sorry about bad spelling im dislexic)

just like some sagestions as we have a bit of a heatwave and my cat is an indoor gat and my flat gets hot.

the cat has got hot so hes not his self. hes just laying about on his side and dosnt evan want to be stroked. he puurs most of the time and he hasent since it got hot. hes also a (mostly) black cat.

i tryed putting a few ice cubes in his water. but then he wouldnt go near it. its very difficalt to get him to drink.

i saw online people saying to give you cat a rub down with a moist towel. (yeah well i nearly lost the use of my arm trying that)

i also have a reasnably large desk fan. but hes really freeked out by wherring sounds. like teh hoover and the dryer. and he really didnt like teh fan eather.

ive left the place with some of teh rooms with the drapes closed and some open. (dont know what will be cooler)

any idears or sagestions to stop me comming home to a cooked cat

uhm, how can it be hotter inside than outside? How do you survive in such heat? How hot are we talking about anyway?

I would bring the cat to a vet for a check-up, this does not sound very healthy and I wouldn't immediately jump to the conclusion that it's just the heat.

If you have a balcony and don't want him to escape, a large cage with a shady part and lots of water might help. Maybe put a towel over the top for shade, but leave the sides open so the breeze gets in. He'll probably still be grumpy in the heat, but he shouldn't get sick.

You can put the water dish in the freezer to chill it and give it chilled water by keeping a pitcher in the fridge. If you have a metal or a ceramic water bowl it will chill like a frosty mug and keep the water cool even after you take it out.

You can get something like this with this and put the ice cubes in the top where your cat won't notice them.

You can do the same thing with the cat bed, just pop it in the freezer. I do it with my pillows when it's really hot in the summer and it's pretty nice.

Uh, pretty easily if you don't have an air conditioner, especially if you have a refrigerator, TV, or computer and can't open a window.

you can pick up a couple large marble tiles from an hardware/improvement store for him to lay on.

You can walk into most tiling stores and grab a couple of free sample tiles. For free. (I can never understand the fact that tiles are so expensive, but that they let you walk out of the store with a what is ostensibly a couple of hundred dollars in tiles with no obligation).

I'll be honest, I clicked on this thread because of the odd name.

I think VisionofClarity's suggestion sounds good. Cloak him in a moist, softly chilled towel when he sleeps. You could try finding a white rug instead of tile so he isn't on top of cement.

dry ice + electric fan = relatively cheap air conditioning.

that is, if you can figure out a way to keep the cat from being too curious about the dry ice!

put it in a covered bucket with a few holes for the air to blow through and a hole for the gas to escape and cool you down. I have a similar setup with an ultrasonic fogger in my frog tank.

Forget any suggestions with putting ice in your cat's water (or above it, or whatever). He won't go near the ice cubes because they crackle and he can't understand why his water dish is making noise.

Just keep changing it often with chilled water from the fridge.

Living in the topics and having cats for most of my life, this is a regular problem when the AC breaks or shuts down. I've listed what I've done in the past:

-Cold towels: Keep about 3 or 4 towels rolled up in your freezer. Switch them out every so often, bringing one out and place it out open somewhere on the floor the cat likes. Cats usually like to sleep on towels, reguardless of what the surface beneath it is.

-Wind tunnel: Get as many of those small $15 desk fans and make a big circle around the apartment. The massive amount of air movement will cool the apartment down a lot (like 5 degrees at least). Last time my air went out it was for nearly two months. This kept my apartment at about 80 instead of the 95+ it was outside. The cat was disturbed by the noise at first, but after a few hours he got used it it (just like a tv or other noisy things).

-Ice cubes (not in water). Get a low dish and put a few ice cubes in it... far away from his food and water. This is a treat. The cat will lick the ice and cool down. This only worked on one of my cats initially, though later I mixed water and a can of tunafish, put them in an ice tray, and made a tuna-flavored cold thing that both seemed to enjoy.

Be creative, but like everyone else said stay away from the cat's food and water. Cats dislike change and get really bothered when their food/drink/litter gets messed with. Also, most cats detest water, so wet towels will likely make the cat unhappy unless you use them in a licking motion (like a momma cat) and even then it would need to be mostly dry. Your miles may vary, but this sort of thing has never worked on my cats and usually only ends up with them wallowing in their litter to redust their coats.

Good luck (and move someplace with central heat and cooling!).

I am not an expert, but it seems possible to me you are overthinking things a little.

During really hot days my cats that were allowed outside would always go and find the hottest surface directly under the baking sun and sit there all day basking in the heat and ignoring anything and everything going on around them. There was a nice cool house for them to sit in and get attention, but they didn't actually want to. Cats are peculiar and what is uncomfortable for you might be most enjoyable for your cat.

Keep an eye on him and his water supply and give him a place to cool down if you can, but don't be surprised if he ignores it.

And I can tell you that mine actively seeks out the shade and will lay in the shade in front of my fan all day on hot summer days, or she'll lay in in the bathtub because the porcelain is nice and cool. Being concerned about your pet over heating when kept inside with no air conditioning is a good thing. Your pet can die of heat stroke if left in a hot place for too long just like a person can.

That's probably not too bad for a cat. They are desert creatures originally and puny English heatwaves are not likely to kill them.

It will be cooler to keep the curtains closed. Assuming you can't open the windows.

yeah i have to keep the windows closed. my flat has a supermarket carpark and 2 very busy roads around it. and the cat is total unaware that cars will squash him.

at my old house there was a much quiter road and id let him out. i come home and find him laying in teh middle of the road. and cars having to drive around him.

and hes too friendly he will get in someones car.

i think hes defantly hot as he keeps going to cool parts on the floor.

he really dosnt like teh damp towel rub. and hes not too keen on his water being too cool.

i may let him laydown on my granit slab chopping bord and see if he like it. then get tiels

(i did try giveing him a bath last year, he wasnt too happy about it. but he was alot happyer after when it cooled him down)

    thankyou all for your sagestions.

Can you get a net or grille of some sort attached to the windows so the windows can be open, but the cat can't get out?

The place I live in at the moment has a sturdy plastic net on the windows so pets can't get out when the window is open.

You could freeze water in 2-liter bottles and leave those on the floor. I don't know if the cat will lay against them, but that's how they keep bunnies cool outside in the heat.

But your cat isn't the OP's cat. He already said the cat won't go near the water when he puts ice in there, and I'm telling him that's the reason. So, forget using ice.
