Do they exist?

I've got my semi-annual craving for a game like Star Control 2. I can't be the only one. Have there been any games made in the past 15 years for this genre?

    Subspace?

    EV:Nova, Flatspace...though those two aren't straight shooters.

    Space Hawk
    Free download here

edit: scratch that. You need a subscription to download from there. I'll try to find the site I got it from ages ago.

Its a caveflyer in space but with gravity, so your shots fall back down and so will you unless you keep flying.

Holy crap - thanks for pointing this out. I mean, loot, space, smuggling, random star systems - this scratches an itch I didn't even know I had yet.

"Asteroids meets Nethack" may be the greatest sequence of three words I have heard in a long, long time.

I was coming to suggest this. Fun fucking game, great for sneaking in some pew pew during short breaks or college lecture classes.

I remember there being some Babylon 5 fangame with realistic physics. I didn't get far enough in it to give you a review, though.

Thank you all so much. Im going to try Trancendence and Nova when I get home. They look quite 'def' (retro genres require retro slang).
