So I'm trying to wean my parents off of crappy Norton products. They have Norton Internet Security, and the subscription is soon to expire. They also have NAV. I think we all know how much these products suck. I'm going to suggest AVG to them, since it's pretty painless and works behind the scenes. Any other suggestions on security software? My mother is pretty internet savvy and knows not to click on dumb popups and shit, but my dad is not that great. Basically she's worried about spyware and stuff like that - which is why they had Norton Internet Security.
She's also having some problems with her web browser (they use Netscape, not sure if I can convince them to use firefox). She says it won't print anything on the screen (maybe a java problem?) and if you leave the browser alone for long enough it goes to a marketing site that is blank except for a URL (I'm asking her for the URL)
tl;dr What programs should I install for my parents to keep their computer secure from viruses and spyware - replacements for NAV and Norton Internet Security.
Yeah, those are the things I was thinking. Anyone else have any ideas?
A side question, what the hell does Norton Internet Security even do besides bog-down your computer with resource hogging crap? I mean, what is it meant to do?

It's a software firewall.
A crappy cumbersome software firewall.

AVG according to my computer expired on the 17th of this month and I can't seem to see a free version.
Am I just visually retarded when it comes to their website?

Windows Defender. I strongly prefer it to third-party antispyware products.
