And dancing titans.
Welcome to the Penny Arcadian Warhammer 40,000 League!
How to play: Everyone who wants to participate, say so in this thread. I will keep a list of the participants, their faction, and their current score in the OP. Also include what country you're in, as I will try and match people in similar time zones to make arranging game times easier. Deadline to opt in will be Sunday, May 30, 5:00 PM U.S. EST. After that, I will post the first match-ups and participants will then have until Sunday, June 6, 5:00 PM U.S. EST to complete their game and post the results in this thread. After that, I'll post the next set of matchups.
You can download the VASSAL wargaming application, along with 40K module and maps from
this link here. Install VASSAL 3.1.14, and check out the user guide to learn how to play on it.
Army size: 1,000 points [hard limit]. Participants will use the same list in all games.
Duration: 6 weeks, 1 game per week.
Opponents: Each week on Sunday evening I will post the next set of match-ups. Once you know who your opponent is, e-mail, PM, IM, whatever them and set up a time to get your game on.
Allowed Armies: All standard 40k armies (No Forge World, I want to keep things simple, this time at least)
Map: There are about 36 different maps included with the VASSAL package above. Randomly pick one to play on. Some of the maps have terrain and cover saves already determined. If not, agree with your opponent before the game how you want to play it.
Mission and Deployment: Use the VASSAL button.
Scoring: Scoring works as follows:
-4 points for a win.
-3 points for a draw.
-2 points for a loss.
At the end of the sixth week, the player with the most points will have bragging rights, if nothing else. I'm pondering some way of providing a prize, or the like, but am not sure how to work it out yet. The player with the LEAST points will be awarded the title of Bloody Smear, and I do have a prize in mind for that.
Rule disputes: If something crops up in a game that cannot be conclusively settled, post it here and I'll make a ruling on how it should be played within the league.
Anything that needs to be further clarified? Did I leave anything important out?

Portugal (GMT+0) but I get off work pretty late, so I think I might be able to catch some Americaneers.
Need to learn how to play on Vassal tough.
I'll bring some virtual Sisters.
Texas, GMT-5 (this post was made at 10am)
Dark Angels!
If you know a better way to run netgames, I'd be happy to hear about it. Right now, Vassal is the best I've got. And that army is?
Oh, yeah, Imperial Guard. I'm in US Eastern Time, too.

Watch me struggle to learn streaming! Point and laugh!
"Oh what a day, what a LOVELY DAY!"
Looks like they do, but no thunderwolf calvary models. At least as far as I can tell. Probably have to do a blood pack biker set and do count as.
"Oh what a day, what a LOVELY DAY!"
They don't have updated Space Wolves, but since you can tag model titles, just substitute something else and label them 'Thunderwolves' or whatever you need.
When I pass the mouse cursor over any buttons it goes white instantly. I can click it, but whatever window would pop up shows up just white aswell.
I used a similar program to play L5R online, updating java would sometimes fix it. Think it would work here?
I've started the player list in the op, how do you make a table in a forum post anyway?
I'll be playing the one and only Black Templars.
Making 1k lists should interesting. I'll fiddle around with it when I get home from this road trip.
By the way I think I'll be plaWAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!
Good luck all, may your chainswords be gore-splattered and all your vehicles be painted red!
2011 PAX Warmachine/Hordes Champion
Man, we need some more Eldar in this league, a little more non-Imperium to spice things up. :P
I plan to lose every game. That way I will win since I will have the most points. :P
I've found that you don't want too much lag between sign-up and getting started. If it drags on too long, people get distracted, wander off, etc and you lose people before the start. Better to have a smaller pool of players and have everything go great, than lose players because things went too slow.
Edit - Looks like Vassal support for Linux is limited, and my medievil Middle East internet connection at a whopping 20k/sec is going to take too long to DL it at 133mb in time to do anything sensible. I'll sit this one out and see how it goes with you guys.
"EVEN IN DEATH I STILL COOK MOTHERFUCKERS".
And I just saved my army woooo! Still need to learn how to play it tough.
By the way, when I look at the table there are some blue boxes with numbers and a few black ones with skulls. What's that for and how do I move them or get rid of them?
Those are counters to be used for various things that need countering. Right click on it and hit 'delete' if you don't want them around. Some maps have large, shaded boxes that you can use to indicate deployment zones. To get rid of those, hold down shift then right-click. If you're ever trying to move something, and merely clicking on it doesn't work, hold down shift, then click.
I think we should get some games going, I'll be free later today and tomorrow (memorial day whooo!). I strongly recommend spectating a game so you can see how it's played. It's actually very... trust oriented. You have to know your rules just like a real 40k game, but also it allows you a ton of leeway to actually make your army.
"Oh what a day, what a LOVELY DAY!"
Death to your false corpse emperor! The eight-sided path is the true way of things.
EST, GMT -5
When do we need to post our 1k lists?
If people want to play, make arrangements to get your game on and have a good time. I'll have the first match-ups posted as soon after five as I can.
