DOOM II XBLA

edited June 2010 in Games and Technology
So Doom II is on XBLA. I fucking love Doom, and I didnt even play it back in the day.

And it has a whole new chapter. A BIGGER DEAL SHOULD BE MADE ABOUT THIS!!

I5gRI.jpg
Theres a quick sample of what to expect with the new levels.

IN A NUTSHELL:

800msp
Good Controls
Awful Multiplayer Netcode
Online co op (Read above)
Local Splitscreen
DOOM gameplay never dies
Non widescreen (4:3 only)

This is a good purchase, but marred by the bad netcode. I couldn't even connect to any games yesterday. But hey, turn on some Nine Inch Nails and blast through demons. I lost a couple hours in the blink of an eye doing that.

Also sidenote, Im missing 1 achievement in DOOM 1, the 100 online kills achievement, if someone wants to hammer that out with me, my XBL tag is donhonk.

How could terrible net code for DOOM even make it past QA? I mean seriously that would be like 40k without Space Marines.

Not lazy, they just want to keep it as close to the original as possible. I assume this isn't even running at 60 FPS. Still buying for the new episode.

edit: not sure why they added 5.1 sound if they wanted to keep it as close to the original as possible though.

Example doesn't work, really, since 40k without SM's might actually be interesting.

So, I've never played Doom 2, but 10 bucks seems a bit much for it. What do I do oh wise Penny-Arcade? Is it worth the 10?

Picked up Doom 2 on a Steam christmas sale for a cool 99 cents. $10, considering no wide screen support or good net code, doesn't sound like it's worth it.

Co-op, however... hmm. If you cranked it to nightmare difficulty, it'd be fun.

Doom gameplay hasn't gotten boring for me yet. Every year or two without fail Doom 2 or Ultimate Doom gets a re-install. Excellent series :)

Pretty much anything can play Doom, in fact. I'm pretty sure there are calculators that can run Doom.

Yeah, you can get Doom on anything these days. And now, you can get it on the home console you currently have hooked up to your large TV and sound system. That's the point! A convenient way to play a classic, awesome game on your current setup.

Plus you get a new episode! That's a sweet deal.

Terrible shame on the lack of WS and poor netcode though. If they had added those two things, this would be an awesome deal. Without them, it's merely a great way to play a classic game on your console.

There are digital cameras onto which you can install custom firmware, and then in fact install and play Doom on.

But there are source ports of all Doom engine games, updating them with modern controls and resolutions. They make the game even awesomer.

Skulltag is the source port of choice for multiplayer. It's basically GZDoom with added gubbins, so there's no real need to use GZDoom or ZDoom at all (Skulltag does single and multiplayer).

It is actually really lazy, since fans have messed with the source and allowed the game to render in widescreen with no stretching or anything, unless they wanted to be super lazy and recycle very old source

And what kind of rock, because sedimentary rocks can run Doom but igneous rocks struggle with it and could probably only do Wolfenstein 3D.

Like you are in every new game thread and movie thread where you'll have to spend good cash to do. How do you do this yet for some reason are running a Wang computer?

How do you not have a PC/laptop from sometime this decade?
