what's the name of the logo animations placed in front of games?
well? I'm sure there's some kind of industry lingo for them. some are quite involved (I think a recent batch of Heroes games with the crazy New World Computing logo animation sparked this)
DMA Design and LucasArts changed it up for each game
contrast to film industry, which are usually still logos.
i don't think intros, as the intro is usually content dealing with the game.
splash screen = i'm not totally convinced, but it's better than any other suggestion. I think of splash screen being relatively unanimated, or with some basic looping background animation at best
nvidia thing isn't really what I'm talking about, though that could apply. it's moreso the developer and publisher's animated logos.
Can't say I'm convinced by splash screens either, since those seem to be largely static.

Some of the nVidia splashes are different depending on the game.
Bloodlines had VV embrace the logo.
UT2K4 (maybe 3) had one of the character come out from behind it with a rocket launcher.

It's splash screen. That's just the programming lingo for any screen that "splashes" up before the actual program starts, and it's what most game developers say too. Splash screens don't have to be static, in fact most aren't anymore. They have any number of things going on. Videos for games, progress bars and status labels, and sometimes even animated little graphics, for regular apps.
To answer your question completely though: While splash screen is pretty common, people call stuff whatever they want. One company may call it one thing, another may call it something else.
In reference to the graphics card splashes: It's funny when a game company switches allegiances. The original Dawn of War II had the nVidia "Way it's meant to be played", when they released Chaos Rising, those were all replaced with the ATI ad.
Actually, they're termed "corporate splash screens" because they're just there to increase brand recognition when what they really do is piss a lot of people right the fuck off. I understand making me see it the first time I put in a game but after that make those fucking god damn things skipable.

In the majority of the cases I've gone through, there will be a .bik or something similar hiding in the game's directory.
Kill it. Or, copy it to a backup folder.

I think this thread is interesting, many of us think we know much about video games and are dumbfounded by this seemingly simple question. It's like asking people what are those plastic things on the end of your shoelaces.
The shoelace thing is an Aglet by the way.
I'm not sure if Chainsaw's right, the only thing I got out of a quick wiki search off Vanity plates was this.
Have any of you played Borderlands, with it's eternity splashes.
5-6 splashscreens at about 10 mins each. The THX one that breaks, and is then repaired by a claptrap is funny the first time. Ok the second and from the third time on you start having these dreams about what you would would do to the person/s that made them unskipable if you could get a hold of him/them.
Then again I can't complain too much since I have it on PC and can edit it down to the three least irritating ones.
Vanity plates. The term's grandfathered in from the TV industry.
The TV versions are called vanity cards; the most obvious ones these days are from Chuck Lorre (creator of Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory). However, those are usually shown after the episode, not before.

I was pretty sure most of them are skippable.
So I'm a little confused at anyone getting this worked up over it.

The true purpose behind aglets are sinister.

The true purpose is because without them after a while the ends would fray and it's a pain in the a to put them through the holes then.
I always thought splash screens were the small log pic that pops up on your desktop before the program fully runs. An example would be the Call of Duty games on PC.
The ones the OP is talking about I usually call them "company logo intros" which I'm guessing I must have made up myself.

If I can't bypass them easily.
Every time I see that "The way it's meant to be played" image I want to stab an Nvidia employee in the face.
Edit: Err, what the Mustachioed gentlemen before me said is correct.
and then I laugh because I'm using an ATI card.

I guess Pixar's is usually animated too, right?
I'll think of some good game ones
blizzard's in diablo 2 light shining through, then b north's with snow blowing in front
longer crazy ones escape me at the moment. I think Monolith does some stuff

I guess her reluctance to kill doesn't apply when it comes to logos. :P
I'd just call them logos, regardless of whether they're animated.

Island. Being on fire.
Well, I was refering to the biting act as embracing (as the kindred definition) but since it didn't turn into an undead logo, I guess I was wrong.
UT3 throws you not only one for Nvidia, but one for Intel as well.
Which makes me laugh because I've got an AMD/ATi build.
Now that you guys mention it, I have heard these described as splash screens before.

I agree Borderlands is the worst offender in recent memory. So awful.
I was pretty sure most of them are skippable.

Everyone I know already knew what those were. We are all also aware that there true purpose is sinister!

Fortunately they're skippable. I've been playing it recently and every time I started it I just hit space a bunch of times until I saw the menu.

This is the first I've heard the term vanity plate though.

I just installed it the other day, but I've only had enough time to fire up a map and dick around with a few weapons and some bots.
When I get some more free time we should get some multi going.

Ok. Add me to Steam, I guess.
