Recommendations on PS2 Japanese games

I'm currently in Japan. There's lots of cheap 2nd hand PS2 games here, and I was hoping to get some advice on which are worth the time.

Rasetsu Alternative (羅刹 -Alternative)
VM Japan (the VM short for Vantage Master)
I can't find reviews in English for these 2 games since they weren't released outside of Japan, and gameplay vids are hard to find too since they're so old.

Grim Grimoire
I'm kinda interested in this game since I saw the thread about it here a few days ago.

Suikoden III, IV, V
.Hack I, II, III, IV
Dororo (aka Blood Will Tell)
Chaos Legion

Wild Arms series
Growlanser series
Generation of Chaos series
I can't remember which games of the above series are available on the PS2, but some input on their overall quality is appreciated all the same.

EDIT: Assume my level of Japanese is enough for me to understand gameplay mechanics, and I'm ok with missing 50% of the story.

If you hail from the US rather than Europe (as they got European releases), look out for Global Defence Force, Gregory Horror Show and Forbidden Siren 2. All good in different ways.

Siren 2 is the best horror game ever and Summon Night 3 is the best Strategy/RPG ever. Get both (although if you're in the UK, you can just get the UK version of Siren 2).

Growlanser IV is the best in the series, reportedly. If you get any one, get that one.

Namco X Capcom is pure guilty pleasure, you can also translation patch it(it's crappy, but passable).

Also, buy me Project Diva PSP if it's cheap. :P

And GrimGrimoire is practically a budget game in the US. Why buy the import? The dub was fantastic.

Also also: there was a sequel to Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land that was JP only.

Busin 0: Wizardry Alternative Neo or something. It looked great.

I have a NTSC-U/C PS2 and a PS3 with NTSC-J backward compatibility. I'm actually from Singapore, and I never saw GrimGrimoire for cheap in the stores I visited when I was back at home.

I'm going back early August, so I could probably get Project Diva 2 lol. That surely won't be cheap though. Speaking of which, I'm also interested in getting a PSP, I just need to figure out whether buying one here + voltage converter would be cheaper than just buying one back in Singapore. At least for the PSP I know what I definitely want.

The Nights Into Dreams remake is pretty good, although the remake version doesn't look all that better than the original.

Rasetsu is a port of a PC game by Kogado. It's... like every other one of Kogado's RTS games, which is to say, really not particularly good... and best played with a mouse. The Generation of Chaos series is okay, but no better than any Idea Factory/Neverland games really.

Instead, you should pick up Venus and Braves (or Seven, its predecessor) and Seinarukana (another SRPG PC Port).

Try some of the Sega Ages collections, such as Monster World Collection or Treasure Box. Make sure your PS2 can play blue back discs though, because that's what both of those are.

I never played Wizardry Tale of the Forsaken Land, but I love the hell out of Etrian Odyssey 1 & 2, and Strange Journey. Didn't play Dark Spire though. I like how the the fights look in TOFL (gives me a bit of an SMT Nocturne vibe), but it seems that the combat's really slow-paced in the gameplay vids I've seen. Meanwhile in the battle vids I've seen of the sequel (Busin 0) it looks like the animations can be sped up significantly.

How's the mapping like in TOFL? Obviously there won't be a separate screen for me to refer to, but I think I'll be fine with a map that you can easily call up as a spell or something.

You don't need a voltage converter, the PSP power brick can take any voltage from 100v to 240v, and both 50/60hz. All you need to do is get a collection of the cords that plug into the wall.

There's a mini map in the upper right corner, and you can call it up with a button. It's pretty easy.

The maps themselves, not so much. I've never played the sequel, but the original is fantastic.

Virtua Cop Rebirth is pretty nifty. It's just Virtua Cop 1 & 2 ported to the PS2, and there's even an English language option. Don't worry about the low review scores. They're mostly just bitching because it didn't "improve" anything from the originals.

Is that part of the Sega Ages series? When did it come out?

Important question for the OP: Do you like fighting games? Because there's a whole thread worth of Japanese PS2 fighting games out there.

Those actually came out in the PAL regions too, sold as Virtual Cop: Elite Edition. They were sold separately though, instead as one package

Definitely get the PS2 version of Tales of Symphonia, if you get the chance. It's supposed to have a ton of extras that the Game-Cube version didn't.

How plentiful are copies of Ico over there? The JPN/PAL versions have extra stuff that aren't in the NA release.

It does have worse graphics and longer load times. A lot longer.

Vantage Master is really fun, at least the version I've played for computer.

Dororo/Blood Will Tell is also pretty fun to play, and has an interesting storyline. How the upgrades are presented is unique as well.

Most copies I've seen are around 2500 yen. Same goes for Shadow of the Colossus.

My personal favorite is final fantasy X :D
I have always loved the original English version of this game. I wanted to collect the International version and play it as well due to the extras that the game has.
Although the speech is in English as the N.A. version, all the text is in Japanese.
This is fine if you can read Japanese fluently. Much of the game involves non-speaking characters, so Japanese written comprehension is necessary to get the most out of the game.

How about all the awesome DDR games that never made it to the USA?

Or the IIDX madness that you could get. If you get the IIDX games I will mail you my turntable pad for the cost of shipping, it's just sitting around in the trunk of my car doing nothing.
