I'm currently in Japan. There's lots of cheap 2nd hand PS2 games here, and I was hoping to get some advice on which are worth the time.
Rasetsu Alternative (羅刹 -Alternative)
VM Japan (the VM short for Vantage Master)
I can't find reviews in English for these 2 games since they weren't released outside of Japan, and gameplay vids are hard to find too since they're so old.
Grim Grimoire
I'm kinda interested in this game since I saw the thread about it here a few days ago.
Suikoden III, IV, V
.Hack I, II, III, IV
Dororo (aka Blood Will Tell)
Chaos Legion
Wild Arms series
Growlanser series
Generation of Chaos series
I can't remember which games of the above series are available on the PS2, but some input on their overall quality is appreciated all the same.
EDIT: Assume my level of Japanese is enough for me to understand gameplay mechanics, and I'm ok with missing 50% of the story.

Namco X Capcom is pure guilty pleasure, you can also translation patch it(it's crappy, but passable).
Also, buy me Project Diva PSP if it's cheap. :P
And GrimGrimoire is practically a budget game in the US. Why buy the import? The dub was fantastic.
Also also: there was a sequel to Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land that was JP only.
Busin 0: Wizardry Alternative Neo or something. It looked great.
I'm going back early August, so I could probably get Project Diva 2 lol. That surely won't be cheap though. Speaking of which, I'm also interested in getting a PSP, I just need to figure out whether buying one here + voltage converter would be cheaper than just buying one back in Singapore. At least for the PSP I know what I definitely want.
Instead, you should pick up Venus and Braves (or Seven, its predecessor) and Seinarukana (another SRPG PC Port).

The first series was just so bad.
Ibara
Espgaluda
Mushihimesama
Psyvariar (1, 2, various other variations)
Homura
Saikyo Shooting Collection vols 1-3

How's the mapping like in TOFL? Obviously there won't be a separate screen for me to refer to, but I think I'll be fine with a map that you can easily call up as a spell or something.
You don't need a voltage converter, the PSP power brick can take any voltage from 100v to 240v, and both 50/60hz. All you need to do is get a collection of the cords that plug into the wall.
This so hard.
There's a mini map in the upper right corner, and you can call it up with a button. It's pretty easy.
The maps themselves, not so much. I've never played the sequel, but the original is fantastic.
Important question for the OP: Do you like fighting games? Because there's a whole thread worth of Japanese PS2 fighting games out there.
Those actually came out in the PAL regions too, sold as Virtual Cop: Elite Edition. They were sold separately though, instead as one package

No it's not. o_O
It does have worse graphics and longer load times. A lot longer.
Anyone want to beta read a paranormal mystery novella? Here's your chance.

Dororo/Blood Will Tell is also pretty fun to play, and has an interesting storyline. How the upgrades are presented is unique as well.
You win this round.
Most copies I've seen are around 2500 yen. Same goes for Shadow of the Colossus.
I have always loved the original English version of this game. I wanted to collect the International version and play it as well due to the extras that the game has.
Although the speech is in English as the N.A. version, all the text is in Japanese.
This is fine if you can read Japanese fluently. Much of the game involves non-speaking characters, so Japanese written comprehension is necessary to get the most out of the game.

Or the IIDX madness that you could get. If you get the IIDX games I will mail you my turntable pad for the cost of shipping, it's just sitting around in the trunk of my car doing nothing.
I KISS YOU!
