This IS done by the same people who did Guilty Gear. I trust they'll design some interesting enemies considering their history of weirdly designed characters. Or at least I hope they will.

I think that's because they're not really going for a Contra game, per se . . . It's Contra to its very core, and yet not; more like a re-tooling of Hard Corps rather than a direct sequel/prequel, which is why Konami's not putting the Contra name on the package. Whatever - it still looks like it's gonna be a blast.
I think the only things that I didn't like were the health bar being 5 hits (that seems too many, 3 would be fine) and the shield/reflect thing going on.
I think the very first screen shot show 3 bars for health, so I wouldn't be surprised if health size is either an option or tied into difficulty.
Yeah, it's already been established that the game will have both an "Arcade" mode (classic Contra rules in effect - one hit kills) and "Rising" mode (which enables the health meter and allows for character upgrading, whatever that entails). This way everybody can find something they like. Oh Konami and Arc Sys, you spoil us so.

Talking to one of the producers of Contra 4, it seemed they wanted to get away from the more twisted "Akira"-like aspects we saw in the likes of Shattered Soldier. Whether that applies here as well, I don't know, but it seems he's had a little involvement-- at least where the name and possibly story are concerned. Beyond that, though, I can't say.

Edit: Just watched the video. It didn't really scream "Contra" to me either - actually it reminded me more of Mega Man X, what with the air dashing and health meters. Not to say it wasn't bad - it was just missing the Contra vibe. Could do without the enemy grunts and groans though. I really like the fact that someone finally made a 2D shooter with high-res graphics, so I'll likely pick this up as a show of support if anything else. Graphically the game looks great, and fun too!

Wow, I loved the original Hard Cops to death and completed it countless times to get all the endings. Hope this branches too. It looks like players can choose different healthbars at the start of the game. Would be nice to team players who are good or novices like this. Visually it seems a way different style though. Not as 'brutal' en 'EXPLODE' as the original. But hell, I take every Contra I can get these days.
Seen the vid with the chopterboss. At first I thought it all was way to tame, then it split up. Can't wait!

I'm really excited about the health bar option. I'm sure I'm not a bad enough dude at this point in my life to see the second level of this game on arcade mode.
Looks like a nintendo game; like 8 bit, nes. I mean, higher color palette and stuff.. but guh. Platforms just seems contrived, the running is too fast, the characters take up too much screen room. Positioning and timing are less important since you seem to get some kind of shield/reflect. I dunno. I love contra, I like their fighting games well enough, but this is a bonafide pass for me. 4 reigns supreme, and frankly, I rather enjoyed the half assed efforts on the ps2 games. I just can't imagine this being a winner unless that video is of the first stage and it's just kind of a joke and it gets to the good stuff after.
Looks more like a Megaman X clone than a Contra game right now. I hope they've got some more creative bosses up their sleeves.

This definitely looks pretty damn good, I can't resist good looking 2d shooters. Especially if they have local co-op. Online co-op is nice too but not required for me.
