Ah, thread buzz inspired me to finally beat Boss 6. Fucking train spider.
I wonder if the Dustloop guys know about this game. I'm gonna ask one Friend who is a top expert player in both GG2 and Brutal Legend, and compares them in great intricacy.
If you take your time on him, he's fairly easy. You should have the machine gun power-up from right before so as long as you don't lose it, he's easy.
Just stay near the bottom near the beginning. When the green blast is coming down, stop firing early, jump away from the train, jump straight up and dash over the blast back onto the train.
Second form, stay near the top. He can't ram into you unless you're too far up, so just shoot him until he moves to your side. Drop straight down by pressing down+jump, wait until you're clear of him, jump again and air dash to the other carts. You have a ton of time until he destroys the train cars. Rinse and repeat. When he starts sending those missile things at you, just take a moment and shoot straight down. That's usually enough to destroy all of them on one side.
Almost all of the bosses are easy if you take your time on them. There's a few exceptions, but so far, I'm starting to die very little on most bosses.
Grrr. Daisuke + Drum Machines = Fail. Guilty Gear XX2 and GG2 Overture will always have his best music. But at least Hard Corps doesn't have Japanese girls squealing like piggies *cough, Blazblue, cough*
I managed to finish Rising Mode with Krystal a few days ago, and despite the ridiculous (even for Contra standards) difficulty spike in the last couple of stages, I'm very happy with the whole thing. Money well spent for a great expansion of the good ol' Contra formula. Now Arcade Mode is a different story. . . I don't see myself even getting halfway through without crashing and burning completely unless I have some backup. Until then I'll be taking Bahamut through Rising, hopefully sharpening my skills some more.
In the meantime I've been making some contributions to the TV Tropes Uprising entry, mostly expanding and cleaning up the main entry and adding some indexes/examples here and there. I think it's looking pretty good, and should help give the game a little more exposure.
I am so ashamed, I still haven't managed to beat the final boss yet.
So much jumping. So much death.
It became a lot easier when I realized most of the time you can't actually hit him so it's best to just jump around and find footholds until you can. He went down like the big slimy seppuku mutant bitch that he was shortly after this realization.
Oh, and I love this game so much that immediately after beating it, I beat it again. Then I beat it with Folken.
I need to play Arcade mode now because Rising mode is just a joke.

Honestly, at this point I only have trouble with a couple bosses.
Also, I want to attempt the no die acheivement, but I know that I'm going to end up dying to a lame ass helicopter jump at some point.
What's nice about Arcade mode is that you get all of the special abilities without having to buy them. That means you can dodge/vault/ambush/reflect.

I think the no death achievement would be pretty manageable playing patiently; you're right about those goddamn helicopter jumps though... I dare say they're the only shitty part of this game.
As a late to the party Playstation member, this game is fucking amazing. Damn you XBros and your timed exclusive.
A couple questions:
Is there a breakdown of what's different about all the playable characters?
Will I have time to beat this Contra 9.0 before Strider 9.0 (Moon Driver) comes out later this month?
Should I play this with a controller or my TE stick?
You do not want a TE. I tried that, and it gets too complicated. The shoulder buttons and triggers are ripped straight out of Super Contra. So you want the triggers to lock your feet or lock your arms, as well as the shoulder buttons for vital dashing and air dashing.

Okay gents, PSN version is live. I will be getting it, so add me if you want to shoot up some mechas.
Tried it last night. Maybe my opinion is wrong, but it feels like they made the normal gun too weak. I bought the Sayuri add on, and I'm happier basically playing it like a Ninja Gaiden clone.
This game is nasty. Made it to stage 2. So many evil tricks.
Ohhhh, you haven't even begun to experience the pure pain yet. Some of the curveballs they throw at you are brutal, especially boss-wise. My advice: Stick to Rising Mode for now, play through with one character to build your skills (and continues, since apparently another one is added to your total every time you either run out or quit at the continue screen), and keep at it. The game's crazy tough but still rewarding, just like the old days.

I think I remember Super Contra starting you off by default with what this game calls the Machine Gun, and that's what people are complaining about.
I can imagine the game being better if the default weapon was such, and in turn, bad guys had more health.
Honestly, if the normal gun just fired at the fastest rate possible when I held down the button I wouldn't mind it so much. I do think that even with the normal gun, players should basically be able to clear bosses quickly as long as they've mastered the patterns. As it is, it just takes a long time and hurts my fingers taking down the bosses.
Whelp, two game overs so far at the final Jungle boss. That's a pretty fun fight, but I never have enough health/lives when I get there. Still improving my game.
Whenever I'm not sleeping when I'm off of work. There really isn't much else for me to do besides game, study something, eat, or work out. 8am - 11pm GMT+2ish. :x
Downloading the full version now. Are the DLC characters a total waste?
The ninja girl is pretty awesome actually, but game-breaking. I wouldn't bother with the other two - mind you, I've not unlocked Leviathon's unique moves yet so I dunno about him really. :P
WOOOOO! Mission Complete! That final boss.... gah, that final boss. I actually beat him twice... first time I missed the helicopter - twice - on my last two lives. And it took me three more tries till I beat him again.
Ninja Jump trivializes so many things, as long as you have the firepower to burn through things. I could just invincibility frame through more than half the last two sub bosses could throw at me.
And a question: Is there a list somewhere of what all the actions do. I'm a little fuzzy on the Assault action. And I have no idea how to perform Leviathan's special actions.

Yeah, I prefer the style seen in Contra III, where the standard gun is just hold and shoot for maximum attacking aggressively. Worked well enough for me in Shattered Soldier, Neo, and ReBirth, but for Contra 4...
PMO: Beginning with Contra III and in every subsequent title, the machine gun has been a sort of standard-issue Contra weapon, allowing players to use turbofire as a default without the need to power-up. This was a welcome change from the days of the original Contra and Super C, where every shot made required a separate button press. However, some previews have referred to the machine gun as a separate item to be obtained.
The question: Will Contra 4 have rapidfire as a standard, or will players have to continue mashing the button until they pick up the right power-up?
SL: We've included auto-fire to save the thumbs of many. However, we also feel that pressing the fire button rapidly still adds an important element of control.
TH: In looking at the past games, the one thing we noticed was that they sort of turned into “Run n Aim” titles, instead of Run n Gun. If you can simply hold down the button to fire and endless stream of bullets, it removes a lot of the tension from the game. Remember those tanks in the snow stage of Contra NES? You have to pound on the B Button and just pray you can shoot fast enough to kill them?THAT is the exact feeling we wanted to bring back in our game.
SL: So, to answer your question, you can hold down the fire button to keep the bullets coming…
TH: But, you won?t fire nearly as much as you would by furiously tapping on the button.
It would seem that the developers of Hard Corps: Uprising agreed with that philosophy. I see where they're coming from there, but HCU feels complicated enough that I think just holding down the button should have been sufficient.
Regarding the Contra name, I'm okay with this lacking it. They seem to want to go in a slightly-different direction from the "manly-man" Contra titles, and I think the different name and anime aesthetic help to do that.

Also there is another DLC character for 200 points.
That red boss guy - Leviathon.
His alt colours are fuckawesome, not unlocked his unique skills yet though.
I guess that's why. But yes; $9.99.

And I bought that horse armour...
Under the dust I reign, invisible, inevitable! KING I AM!

She's pretty nippy, good fun in Rising Mode.
Leviathon starts with one piece of life!

HOWEVER
IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER
Been listening to the OST all night.
Awesome, classic.
I'm not sure why they left the Contra name off of this. I can understand why, but it's not like the name has a bad connotation. Contra 4 was amazing.
This feels a little more cheap than 4, but still good.
I can imagine the game being better if the default weapon was such, and in turn, bad guys had more health.
I just beat it with all four characters. I'm going to read up on the special abilities I never use and start playing for score now.
I don't even think this is that terribly difficult.

Do you start the first stage by crashing a van into a barrier and flipping through the windsheild?
That's Stage 7, essentially. Many mooks die.
