Buying concert tickets; which ones?

Okay, I'll admit straight up that I've never been to a concert. I'm about to buy some tickets for the first time, but to be absolutely honest, I'm not sure which ones to go for.

The options available are: Gold/Silver Res. Seating, Silver Non-Alcohol, Gold/Silver Side View, Gold/Silver rear view.

Now, enlighten me on how this works. In seating areas, I assume you must sit, correct? What about non-alcohol areas; are they standing, and where would they be positioned? I can't seem to figure these things out from the website.

And most of all, of all these options, which ones should I go for?

    why are you going?

to see a band perform live? then get as close as possible, in the GA (General Admission / non seated standing) pit in front of the stage. otherwise you might as well be watching a video feed of them (at home?)

personally I think one should always be as close as possible.

but maybe you're weaker (lots of bands command a pretty active front of the stage crowd), or tire more easily, or are ill, or would prefer lots of empty room to dance, or whatever and you'd rather be further back or even sit down.

maybe you're going to flirt with someone instead and want to be able to talk or something and sit down

also research the act and see what kind of show they put on. Some bands have very visual shows and it's not SO bad sitting a ways away and being able to take it all in.

otherwise it's gonna be a venue by venue thing what exactly the sections and price levels refer to. so call ticketmaster and the venue if you can't figure it out between their website and the website of the venue

and if you're super serious about it, visit the venue in advance and get a good idea of the layout/real distance of things.

/having been on the rail dead center for so many acts and venues, I pretty much regretted every single time I wasn't right up front -once when we got seats over the GA pit -and every other time the show was assigned seating and I was more than a few rows away or substantially off centre

not to mention all the hands-on/shoulder rubbing with the band members /superior photograph opportunities /stage swag access like setlists /conversations with the band between songs /etc etc etc - none of that happens when you're back there somewhere

i'd still try to get them somehow like on craigslist or something, but a distant 2nd choice is to get something relatively level with the stage, and your choice

either closer, but off centre/skewed view of stage/turn your body or head
    OR
further away, but facing the stage better (like watching tv)

at least thats the way most stadium type shows are arranged

Seen Muse a number of times, from just about every angle/position available.

They are a visual spectacle, so you can be generally assured that whether you happen to be pressed up against the security fence, or watching from towards the back (There is obviously a sensible limit to how far back I'd pay to be there) you'll enjoy the gig on some level.

You don't have to sit if you're in the seating area. I saw muse a couple months ago and I don't think there were many people sitting at all, regardless of whether they had seats or not.

you should probably buy the closest seats that are in a pricing level that you feel comfortable paying

I don't really know what other advice anyone can give on this

either you'll be closer and paying more money or further and paying less

don't buy anything directly to the left or right of the stage, since you don't want to be staring at the left speaker stack for the whole show, but really anywhere in the stadium is going to offer a similar experience if you're getting seats rather than GA

For Muse, if you're going to sit, I think a little further back works best. This way you can see the whole visual set that they use when they perform. I think the tickets my friend got last time were a little too far away, and yes even in the nose bleeds everyone was standing. My advice is to get a good seat that's not too close so you can take everything in.
