Quest for Power
Infamous 2 is out! Festival of Blood DLC Launch is a go!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wdr-mU63OEIWhat you need to know about Infamous 2's combat3 minute "Gameplay" trailer (more of a powers/graphics demo)
Some changes:
- You wont just jump up buildings but will construct ways to make it up buildings using objects to heighten that sense of exploration.
- You will be able to choose between gaining napalm or ice powers to supplement your electrical abilities.
- Unlike the original, this entry begins with Cole as a certified superhero, so you won't be forced to gradually reacquire familiar abilities. "We want you to start out feeling like a full-on superhero and ramp up from there."...for instance, Cole's abilities to grind on power cables isn't a skill you need to learn again - you can do that right from the start." [Hell yeah]
- There is a new melee weapon you'll be carrying with you at all times, effectively an oversized tuning fork to channel your electric slide:
- Zeke has learned his lesson and is much more helpful, making you items that will give real ultimate power (ninjas not guaranteed)
- The city is "busier" and there are more people, cars and things happening in the game thanks to improvements to the game engine
- Bigger, meaner bosses
- A smoother morality system, not so black and white. The impacts of your decisions may not be immediately apparent.
- Water still kills you, tread lightly in the swamps
- Far more visually distinctive areas
- User created missions?!?
As seen in the videos, the setting will be changed. He's moving to a city that is essentially New Orleans called "New Marais," environments to include the brilliant almost Blade Runner-style streets of the city, cemeteries, swamps, dilapidated mansions and large cathedrals.
What we know of the story so far (Here there be spoilers):
Kessler tried to prepare Cole for the coming of the Beast and pulled out all the stops to do it, including the triggering of the ray sphere, quarantine of Empire City and the death of Trish. His efforts have failed, as due to his own tampering with reality the "timelines have schismed," causing the Beast to appear years earlier than he would have. Cole, who by the end of the first game is the most powerful being in Empire City, is by no means prepared for this mighty foe:
Cole barely escapes with his life, and realizing he has no chance to survive, makes his time south from Empire City to New Marais. The pulse of the game will be searching for more answers about the First Sons and their tech, and powering up for the ultimate showdown with the Beast as he slowly wreaks havoc on his way south to find you (Doomsday style.) You'll find trouble immediately upon your arrival in New Marais from the local anti-freakshow militia who's ready to gun down anything that might not be fully human, including Cole. You'll also run across the militia fighting with a local population of bayou mutants, who aren't very cozy with you either. And so it begins..
In-game cutscenes will be used for character interaction and more immediate events while we'll still see a continuation of the comic book style cutscenes,
as seen in this trailer, for longer-winded exposition.

So yeah, super excited about this. Here's to hoping they'll put quite a bit more time into textures, NPC models, animations and bug testing.
"I think I can comment on this because I used to live above the Baby Doll Lounge, a topless bar that was once frequented by bikers in lower Manhattan."
Anyway, I bet OP was just dying to use that thread title.

Now it has somehow got worse.
Let's hope the game quality works in inverse proportion to the character design.
What makes him a douchebag? that he looks good? not his fault he is gorgeous and probably works out. jealous imo
I don't like inconsistency between voice actors in franchises a lot of the time, but apparently Cole's voice bugged a lot of people the first time around. I wanna hear it before I judge.
Cannot wait for the second game
And I liked the character design on Cole in the first game a lot, and he looks fine here
And the story was so damn great that I can't wait to see where they take it
Come to think of it, every single character in that game was a fucking douche. Here's to hoping none of them returns.
Fuck his best friend, though
And his massive cunt of a girlfriend, goddamn
The "You lost all your awesomesauce powers from the first game due to...amnesia!!!" route or the "You just get more awesome powers now" route.
But then he'll lift Cole's powers out of his body and Cole will be like "WHAT?!"
You'll probably keep most of your powers from the first game (maybe they'll read your save to see if you went good or evil) but face new enemies that are immune to your current abilities or something silly like that.

I really enjoyed the first game so I'll be looking forward to this.
And also, Cole powered up via tapping into electrical currents. They could fairly believably strip him of some power by having some sort of a blackout or something. If an EMP went off in Empire City, that might fuck him up just a little bit.
I will say that Cole is a great protagonist.
Cole's new power goes haywire and strands him helpless in the old west. Now cole must find an alternate source of electricity to go back to the future before he's shot in the back over a matter of eighty dollars.
InFamous was also way less frustrating. Prototype was riddled with broken combat mechanics, such as getting rocket juggled, tossed around with no hope of recovery, and of course the entire Elizabeth Greene boss fight is one giant clusterfuck.
I agree. But Prototype was a lot more fun to play because it was much faster paced. Fuck getting down buildings in inFamous 1.
Agreement!
The only disappointment I have in the new design is the change of hair color. Along with word that he'll have a new voice actor, that kinda' sucks - we got attached to Cole as he was, if you're going to have him evolve as a character (with some physical variation) that's fine, but going from blond to brunette and having a new voice will certainly throw me.
Beyond that, I don't mind it. He's still got his backpack, and the white line/arrow design on his pants is enough to keep it from being wholly generic.
That said, does anyone else remember the way Cole looked in the first couple inFamous trailers?
It's nothing like what we got - Cole may have dreadlocks and a turtleneck by the time the game comes out.
First trailer for the original inFamous.
I actually don't hate this concept, it sort of makes you appreciate the powers more when you get them back. At least it worked like that in Metroid Prime and God of War 2 (where is sort of happened in the beginning). Yeah, it is arbitrary, but only in the sense that the entire storyline of a singleplayer game is inheritly arbitrary.
Given how the last game ended, though, it would make absolutely no sense this time around.
In fact, whether I can be bothered with infamous 2 depends almost entirely on whether Cole keeps his powers.
That's a really dumb outlook to have. Games are all about powering up and getting stronger as you progress through the game. Who cares if the character is de-powered. Its fun to build the character back up. To say you won't play a game because the protagonist gets reset to level zero is incredibly naive since that happens in basically every sequel ever.
Megaman never keeps his weapons. Gordon Freeman always starts out with only a crowbar. Commander Shepard was killed and had to recollect all of his/her weapons and gadgets. Its just the way video games work.
And its less of a big deal in inFamous than in the Metroid series that you used in your example. In Metroid, the puzzles are solved by your items. You can only access certain rooms after acquiring the super missles, graple-beam, space jump, etc. At least with inFamous, the game is not completely structured around what powers you do and don't have. The powers only serve to allow you to more effectively kill dudes.
As I stated in one of my posts above, a totally believable way that they could de-power Cole would be some sort of city-wide blackout or EMP. If he cannot draw power from the electrical sources of the city, it would serve as a fairly logical balancing mechanic for the first part of the game.
I was talking about plot reasons, not gameplay.
Plot-wise, Cole having to get his powers back again would render the ending for the first game rubbish.
Pretty much. It's just lazy design, to boot.
Metroid Prime 3 managed fine starting you off with quite a few things.
Exactly.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
