The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Specifically, tell me about the 600 point Advanced Pack. Is it just skins? Are these skins things that would affect the gameplay, in that if I did not have them, I would be missing features/levels of the base pack? Is it essential, or could I pass on it?
I ask because the announcement of the new DLC and it's limited time premium pricing has me intrigued to finally get the full version of the base pack.
I guess this could also be a thread about the new DLC, so uh... discuss.
Three new packs will be available this coming Wednesday, the first of which contains the Heavenly Star skin. Perhaps the fact that it will be free to Gold subscribers until February 21 is to be interpreted as a sign of atonement. The other two, namely the VS CPU pack and the Puzzle/Mission pack fill up the gaping holes in the base download, each costing a not entirely outrageous 100 points ($1.25) each. That lasts until February 21, after which the price goes up to a thoroughly questionable 300 points ($3.75).
The thing that annoys me the most about how Lumines Live! was handled on XBLA isn't the cost. When everything is finally pieced together, it'll cost cheaper and be more or less exactly the same as Lumines II on the PSP. No, what annoys me most is that there was absolutely no reason to split the content up like this. I wanted to buy a full product when I bought it...not have to wait three months for the puzzle and VS modes. I could care less about the cost, but to sit on already-done content (which is obvious since it was in the PSP version of Lumines II) for three months is really annoying.
The Advance Pack brings Lumines Live! about 30% closer to what Lumines II on the PSP shipped as.
What does this mean for those of us who know very little about Lumines II?
It means that Lumines Live!, when it came out, without the Advance Pack DLC (or any other DLC that may come out) had about 30% of the content that the full game should have had. This is obvious considering what Lumines II on the PSP shipped with. Lumines II is basically the same thing as Lumines Live!, with skins appearing in a different chronology and perhaps a few different skins here and there (I didn't play fully through both).
Lumines II shipped with Base Challenge Mode, Advance Challenge Mode, Skin Edit mode, Puzzle Mode, Mission Mode, and VS Mode all fully available right out of the box.
Lumines Live! has the SAME SHIT basically but "shipped" (or rather "appeared") with only Base Challenge Mode, 5 puzzles from Puzzle Mode, 1 level of VS Mode, and either 1 or 5 missions from Mission Mode - I can't remember. Advance Challenge Mode has many more skins than Base Challenge Mode, and there are upwards of 50 puzzles in the full Puzzle Mode, plus a slew of missions.
So, what I mean is, Lumines Live! and Lumines II came out at around the same time and are nearly identical products, so the content was already in existence, but Lumines Live! basically had 30% of what Lumines II did.
Seriously, I know next to nothing about Lumines. Do skins = levels, or are they just cosmetic and don't really make much of a difference?
Skins are the only real reason for playing Lumines. Skins = levels, sorta, yes.
Lumines is very simple in gameplay mechanic, but what keeps it fresh is that every four "levels" (think in terms of Tetris levels - the more lines you clear, the more levels you gain...in Lumines, the more cubes you clear, the more you gain in level) your board morphs into a new skin, which usually has a vastly different visual aesthetic than the one before it and a completely different song which syncs to your actions - dropping blocks, creating/clearing cubes, etc. Also, cubes don't clear immediately like lines in Tetris do. In Lumines you have a time-line (I forget its actual name) that sweeps horizontally. With some later skins, the time line might slow down while blocks drop much faster, and then the blocks will slow down for the next skin and the time-line might speed up making it more difficult to make combos, etc.
It's an excellent, excellent game. But...the way they handled Lumines Live! was horseshit, that's all. Don't let that detract you from getting into it, I guess, unless you have a PSP. The PSP version is superior, in my opinion. The only thing I'm really interested in on XBLA is the eventual "celebrity skin" releases. And no, that wasn't a Hole reference.
I still wonder if splitting Lumines Live was a weird way around the 50 meg limit. With the base and advanced pack it clocks it at about 101 megs on my 360's HDD.

What...what 50 meg limit?
The one Castlevania:SOTN just broke that's all over gaming news sites.
It's technically the limit for an Arcade title, and I've really no idea what's going on with it.

Not to derail, but why would that matter? I mean why a 50 meg limit?
The Advance pack of Lumines Live is much, much more fun than the base pack.
Extra skins = extra music = new combinations of fall rates and bar speed = new sound effects = new textures on everything. It REALLY does mean a lot.
The Advance pack is worth getting, otherwise you are missing out on what the game is all about. I spend most of my time on Advance pack skins. Only two or three base pack make it into my normal map rotation.
BTW, expect to play for three hours on the advance pack in the first sitting. It is crack.
Q1 but it's also supposed to be budget priced, so around $30 US.
Lumines Live does provide the convenience of not having to go out to purchase it and the possibility of upgrades plus Live integration (voice chat with friends while playing, multi-player), but with the Ps2 version I'll have a hard copy (game disc) so I don't have to worry about Microsoft getting rid of my Live Arcade purchases in the very very far future once something new comes around; I'll always have the game no matter what happens to the console.
Should I buy the Advance Pack if I've never been able to beat every skin on Basic in Challenge mode?
It's still worth it IMO. I play both Advance and regular Challenge... Each mode is pretty different based on the skins. It's good to be able to change between them when you're having a bad day on one or the other.

It is annoying that they broke things up like they did, but even still I'm excited about the new content that comes out this week. I wasn't planning on buying them originally since I expected them to be overpriced, but at 100 MS points a piece for the Mission/Puzzle & Vs CPU modes? Sold.
I wonder if the Heavenly Star pack can be purchased by Silver members or if it's exclusive to Gold members. If it is a Gold exclusive, I may have to pick up a month of Gold (hey, I was looking for an excuse to try out Heavy Weapon online).

Hell, there was xbox games that had saves over the size of xbox memory cards.

Can't decide which version is better/better value.
Although I find myself playing the demo for an hour or two at a time.
