AbsoluteZeroThe new film by Quentin KoopantinoRegistered Userregular

Hell, IGN even gave the actor who plays "Jacks" in the vid a call, The Dark Knight's Michael Jai White. His reps told us that White believed the shoot was a marketing component for the game.
I think that pretty definitively makes this NOT an actual movie that is happening. If the actor who had the most face time in the trailer, and would presumably be an important character in the movie, only did a shoot for a 7 minute trailer god knows when and believed it was for marketing the game..... it seems incredibly unlikely this is a movie trailer.
. . . Why won't they let this franchise die already?!?! MK hasn't been relevant since the end of the 90's, and every single attempt at bringing it back from the brink of death has been ultimately forgettable.
And yet they still sell well. Especially when they're rated M, unlike MK vs DC.
Yeah, I know; it's just . . . even all the money Midway made with MK couldn't ultimately keep them afloat, and considering the stigma the last MK movie has gotten, and all recent game movies in general (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time hasn't been doing as well as hoped, even with Disney, Bruckheimer and Bay behind it) I can't see why Warner would want to try bringing the license back this way, especially with such a retooling. If they can somehow tap someone to make a good new MK game, great, but I don't exactly see people lining up for a new MK movie.
And as some people have pointed out, Johnny Cage dies a lot in the game series, so I hear.
He technically only died once, during Shao Kahn's invasion of in the MK3 backstory,, but then managed to come back from the dead temporarily shortly afterward because the turmoil caused by dimensional invasion prevented his soul from going to the afterlife.
After that, he just went to Raiden and said "Heaven sucks, can I go back to life" and Raiden was like "Sure."
Well, I suppose you could say he died twice since apparently all the good guys from Deadly Alliance who didn't return in Deception (Including Cage) were apparently killed and brought back to life as slaves by the big bad.
This Undisputed 3 movie is pretty fun. I'm glad this thread told me about it.
Very cheese with fights that are, indeed, awesome.

Excellent video/game trailer/teaser/whatever. It went just far enough into 'gritty realism' to skirt the goofiness present in much of the series, while at the same time retaining enough of the cheese to make it enjoyable without being cringeworthy.
I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the MK series, so I'm excited to see what they're going to do with it now that it's no longer in Midway's hands.

I like the whole Strogg-Zero design. Not digging Baraka, though. Looks like some Ghosts of Mars shit.
In the end, though, this trailer by itself manages to be cooler than any other thing associated with the MK franchise within the last several years. I'm digging it, whatever it leads to. I'm just prepared to be completely disappointed. Sorry, Midway. That's your doing.

I still doubt this is a movie, if it is it'll be one of those straight to DVD ones i would think. Nobody cares about MK these days except for old fans who played it 15 years ago on super nintendo when the game didnt suck ass.
Hate to say it, but the game sucked ass then too. The fatalities covered up for the terrible gameplay.

Did anyone else suspect the Prisoner to be Kano, up until they revealed it to be *SPOILERING TO PROTECT THE WHINEY*
Scorpion?
I wonder if they'll get Kano to be in in that again. Kano was my main man in MK1.
Ya. Then I thought the first dossier was going to be Kano, like the diamond-skin was going to be his metal head. And the inside-out eyes were going to explain his red-eye. Then it wasn't, so I went back to thinking that the prisoner was Kano.

The actor who played Kano in the original MK movie is dead. Sorry to say. So it wouldn't be him, if this were an actual movie.
Well, not him clearly. It could be another dude. Just because an actor who played a character dies is no reason to retire that character from any movie that might ever be made again.
Just Batman, though. This time. All of the Batmans. From every batverse. Unstoppable.
Including the Communist one? Where he has a very sexy hat?
Fixed that for ya.
I was more thinking the Bat family, with Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, etc. Maybe a few villains too and some Outsiders too, or the other more "normal" heroes (Green Arrow, Wildcat, etc.)

I thought the Red Son Batman was against communism because it killed his parents and subsequently against Communist Superman.
Yeah, I figured I knew who the prisoner was. It looked interesting, but I really did enjoy the interdimensional mysticism from the series. A city overrun by gang violence and such just isn't as interesting a setting as ruins and shit with floating rocks and druids and acid pits.
And while I really enjoyed the human-sprite versions of MK, it's never been what anyone could call a good fighting game. I really don't know how removing all the dumb elements that made the games fun can improve this.

MK > SF
Mortal Kombat is right alongside Killer Instinct in the ridiculously rose coloured glasses department. They were both games based on gimmicks that are no longer unique or even interesting, and for either to survive in a new form they would have to be so different from the originals that they may as well be different series altogether.
First step for Mortal Kombat would still be to take it so far away from Ed Boon. Guy couldn't design a decent fighting game if the entire Earth realm depended on it.
This played to me, like a pilot for a t.v. show. Like, the series will be Scorpion hunting down frostyballs, trying to find him at the tournament. (Btw the tournament takes place all over Decon City, not just one location)
Inbetween that. He solves crimes.

EDIT: I feel the need to elaborate on all the reasons why this is a thing that is not good
1. MK was one of the most 90's things ever. It's called Mortal Kombat. With a K. It took everything about the 90's and put it in one product: XTREME to the max (is there even one 'c' in the entire series?), blood 'n' guts, and ninjas. So many ninjas. Can you reboot a franchise that's about as cool as American Gladiators?
2. Dr. Barraka...
3. ...Which is a result of trying to make a more "gritty" and "realistic" product. But, as point 1 illustrates, MK was from the 90's, making it neither. Nothing will change this, unless you take the most basic foundation of the IP and toy with it. Speaking of which, MKs balance between the modern mortal realm and the more ancient, mystical realms was one of the few things worth keeping. Why the hell did they ditch it?
A possible 4th is Johnny Cage dying, but at the same time, I can't be sure that isn't something that can only help plug one of many holes in this sinking ship.

This is exactly what I wanted to say only explained much better. This rebirth or whatever isn't a good idea for a game, and although it's been basically confirmed it's for a game, if there was ever a movie expanded on this idea, it would go straight to DVD.
I never liked anything about the Mortal Kombat franchise. The trailer looks alright, whatever it's for (the sub-zero rendering has me leaning in the 'upcoming game' direction), but I'm not going to get excited about anything at this point.
I mean, MK started with Midway looking at all of the money Capcom was raking-in with it's awesome arcade fighters, and knowing that they wanted to cut themselves a slice from that pie but they didn't have:
- Any artistic talent
- Any game design talent
- Any creativity
...So they slapped together a schlocky arcade fighter that used motion capture instead of art, over the top gore & a FATALITY! gimmick instead of tight game design, and a derivative B-horror movie plot. Everyone played it because, hey, GUY WITH FOUR ARMS WHO PUNCHES YOUR HEAD OFF!, but MK had shaky beginnings at best and hasn't aged well at all.
I am very conflicted over that trailer. It's awesome and shitty at the same time.
Doesn't that describe Mortal Kombat exactly?
No, MK was always pretty much shit.
As The Ender put it pretty much perfectly earlier nothing about MK was quality and if it didn't have the fatalities and blood no one ever would have noticed it.
The actual gameplay, particularly compared to Street Fighter II, was complete shit. The graphics were terrible and even the much talked about fatalities were for the most part idiotic and at best laughable. The characters were absurdly generic and what a bored teenager would scribble on their notepad in math class. The story wasn't even B movie quality; and it wasn't even fleshed out till later MK's. MK 1 was more or less a straight up "hey, tournament, kill eachother; oh yeah dude with arms".
There was virtually nothing about it other than the shock value that made it worth playing and if the media of the time hadn't made such a huge deal over the violence no one probably would have played it at all. Even taking SFII out of the equation there were much better arcade fighters at the time.
Having said all that at least this "trailer" was somewhat interesting. If nothing else it was mostly well done if not really cheesy because of how hard they tried to keep it "real". The fighting was pretty cool to watch though.
I'm certainly not going to hold my breath for anything enjoyable coming out of it though.

Agreed. And it managed to somehow convey a Mortal Kombat (game)-esque fight.
Just needs more uppercut
Heck, Reptile reminds me a little of Killer Croc, right down to the cannibalism.

Oh fuck yes he would. I'd go to see just that.
Looks interesting, but if this is for a game I hope they don't go all super realistic- I like my MK games to have a bit of imagination.
Was very surprised at who it was.
That did that already.

I thought that too, but then got distracted trying to find Sonya.

Also does Subby and his brother look alike in this game or something? Are they both cyborg freaks or something?
I mean, Sub-Zero's a cyborg now? So should I assume the Lin Kuei went full digital in this version without a hitch? Or what? So confused.
