EDIT: I feel the need to elaborate on all the reasons why this is a thing that is not good
1. MK was one of the most 90's things ever. It's called Mortal Kombat. With a K. It took everything about the 90's and put it in one product: XTREME to the max (is there even one 'c' in the entire series?), blood 'n' guts, and ninjas. So many ninjas. Can you reboot a franchise that's about as cool as American Gladiators?
2. Dr. Barraka...
3. ...Which is a result of trying to make a more "gritty" and "realistic" product. But, as point 1 illustrates, MK was from the 90's, making it neither. Nothing will change this, unless you take the most basic foundation of the IP and toy with it. Speaking of which, MKs balance between the modern mortal realm and the more ancient, mystical realms was one of the few things worth keeping. Why the hell did they ditch it?
A possible 4th is Johnny Cage dying, but at the same time, I can't be sure that isn't something that can only help plug one of many holes in this sinking ship.
1. Batman came back. From Adam West.
2. I don't remember what Baraka's real name is, but it's not Dr. Baraka.
3. Opinions, etc. I personally thought the whole Otherworlds thing they had was going into looney-tunes territory, even for MK. It was approaching DC-verse levels of convolutedness, and DC had to clean house with reboots and giant events several times.
Well duh, I know it's not Dr. Baraka. But Baraka is an insane demon, not an intelligent doctor who goes off the deep end. Whoever decided that was a good idea should be fired.
But to be serious, I don't see this as being so horrible unless you loathe MK. Tearing out a guy's spine or friendshipping him a rainbow was always stupid. This seems to be following perfectly. Still doesn't mean it won't be fun.
I don't know, MK used to have a comic-like quality to it. It was ridiculous, but involved other dimensions and horribly bastardized Asian mythology. Now it seems like they're trying to keep it that ridiculous, but explain it in a more realistic fashion. Something's gotta give.
Well duh, I know it's not Dr. Baraka. But Baraka is an insane demon, not an intelligent doctor who goes off the deep end. Whoever decided that was a good idea should be fired.
He's actually a mutant, not a demon.
..Well, granted his race of nomadic mutants was descended from Human/Oni hybrids, but that's not the point.

I am very conflicted over that trailer. It's awesome and shitty at the same time.
Doesn't that describe Mortal Kombat exactly?
No, MK was always pretty much shit.
As The Ender put it pretty much perfectly earlier nothing about MK was quality and if it didn't have the fatalities and blood no one ever would have noticed it.
The actual gameplay, particularly compared to Street Fighter II, was complete shit. The graphics were terrible and even the much talked about fatalities were for the most part idiotic and at best laughable. The characters were absurdly generic and what a bored teenager would scribble on their notepad in math class. The story wasn't even B movie quality; and it wasn't even fleshed out till later MK's. MK 1 was more or less a straight up "hey, tournament, kill eachother; oh yeah dude with arms".
There was virtually nothing about it other than the shock value that made it worth playing and if the media of the time hadn't made such a huge deal over the violence no one probably would have played it at all. Even taking SFII out of the equation there were much better arcade fighters at the time.
Having said all that at least this "trailer" was somewhat interesting. If nothing else it was mostly well done if not really cheesy because of how hard they tried to keep it "real". The fighting was pretty cool to watch though.
I'm certainly not going to hold my breath for anything enjoyable coming out of it though.
So if it didn't have the things that made in a unique fighting game to set it apart from the Capcom games...it would have nothing? Oh...cool logic in here.
I also believe it was the first fighting game to introduce the blocking system which is now in every fighter imaginable.

Looks interesting, but if this is for a game I hope they don't go all super realistic- I like my MK games to have a bit of imagination.
I can't see Jason Statham as Kano. I mean, he has the looks and build for it, but I don't think the poor guy has the heart to play a villain. Which Kano is.

Think of it as a reboot.
Which it is.
Rebirth is to the baseline MK as Ultimate Marvel is to Marvel.

It was also a good game.
The main (possibly only major) problem with the early MK games is that everyone has the same exact basic move set. THis is one of the things I liked when they made MK4, they gave everyone their own unique two fighting styles. Deception later made this even better, giving each character three unique styles.
The old MK games are still tons of fun to play though, even if holding a button to block is strange to my mind.
MK2 is still one of my favorite fighters. I liked the fighting system (everyone has the same moves with slightly different ranges and speeds, plus a selection of special moves)
Also, it's the last time the majority of the fatalities in the game were actually cool.
I really wouldn't mind a realistic turn on the MK series. When you think about it, the entire cast were a bunch of maniacs out to kill everyone that got in the way of their own personal goals. Recasting the fighters as actual maniacs, set in a more realistic world might not be too much of a stretch.

Street Fighter and Art of Fighting both had blocking.
But as much as I dislike the Mortal Kombat franchise, attacking the gameplay of the first one while comparing it to Street Fighter 2 is unfair. First of, it WAS unique. It played differently from all the other fighters on the market. Doesn't mean it was good, but you can only take the long view as poor in retrospect, because there's no reason it couldn't have gotten better. And Mortal Kombay 2 was a better game in every regard, it was only after that that the series really started to go downhill, mostly because Midway was chiefly an arcade company and had zero interest in balance, while the Ed Boon and the other guy became more and more interested in their silly mythology and new gimmicks.
And it's rather unfair to site Capcom for balance. Street Fighter 2 was a poorly balanced and extremely buggy game. It wasn't till Super Turbo that they managed to get things right, and it was still poorly balanced overall, and what balance was achieved was as much an accident as it was intentional. In some ways Mortal Kombat 3 was playable at higher levels, and just like Street Fighter, the players did so in ways that the creators had never planned for.
Armageddon pretty much ended any hope of a straight continuation of the current MK storyline though. MK vs DC was pretty good though, even with very reduced gore

THis is one of the things I liked when they made MK4, they gave everyone their own unique two fighting styles. Deception later made this even better, giving each character three unique styles.
It was actually the complete opposite. Having a basic moveset that each character could vary from made things easier to pick up and more iconic, while letting the special moves stand out more. Comparatively, 3d fighters have been running this model for ages and it works out very well. When the series went to 3d they lost a whole lot of what made them unique and fun, and by MK5 shit was terrible. Three fighting styles was the worst gimmick MK ever had; they served NO purpose, and combos were still just preset sequences. It also made the games nearly impossible to play on sticks. It ended up being the worst of all worlds.
Oh yeah, another thing that pisses me off: Making Scorpion the primary focus character. Yes, I get it: Everyone loves Scorpion. He's the most popular character.
That doesn't mean he needs to be at the center of the damn story. God this is like the original series where they progressively made him more and more lame to give him more and more face time! I think he wound up as the chosen champion of the Elder Gods at one point.
Was MK vs DC worth picking up? It looked decent despite the lack of blood.
I like the trailer. I really like the idea of Reptile's new backstory. I was unsure on Baraka but on second viewing when he kills Cage and the blades extend I was actually sold on him. The dreads are a good way to keep that same harsh, angled look to his head without actually making him a mutant.
Really dig Subby too - very neat take on him - can't be any worse in action than maskless Subzero.

MK vs DC is pretty good, it goes back towards the series roots, and it has a pretty good (and funny) story mode to boot. It has a few minigame like things added in, for when you counter grabs, or when you fling someone down a level, though they aren't too intrusive.
You know, I probably would have been happy as hell about this trailer if they did four things.
1. Replace Scorpion with Kano as the prisoner sent in to get intel.
2. Replace Reptile with Baraka as the deformed guy. Keep the "grafts blades into his hands." bit though. Baraka was always a sort of deformed human anyway, while Reptile was always the lizardman. (Seriously, that's his thing)
3. Don't use any major non-human characters for the other roles. There's plenty of popular human or near human characters to fill out the ranks.
4. Don't fucking kill Johnny Cage in the backstory. Just don't include him if you don't want him around.

Superman had a fullscreen infinite that was discovered before the game hit the shelves. Flash had one as well, but it wasn't fullscreen.

Yeah. MK vs DC was broke as shit.
Still, like I said earlier the thing that irritates me about MK more than anything is how stiff the animations are. They have almost no fluidity to them. Heck, most of the time it still looks like it did back in the 90s.
Also, gallons of blood off of toe kicks. So stupid.
The animation has actually gotten progressively worse since MK4.
I'd also like to note that there have been many infinites discovered in MK vs DC. Which isn't such a bad thing, except that they were all discovered day 1 because they're basically just looping stun moves. Like, if you looked at all the moves in the game and thought about which ones had potential to be infinites, all the ones you'd identify likely WERE infinites.

Apparently Jeri Ryan, who played Sonya, thinks this is supposed to be a proof of concept trailer to get WB to greenlight a new movie. And since Michael Jai White was under the impression that this was supposed to be a marketing component for a video game, we can conclude that not even the people involved in this thing know what the hell it is.
I'm liking this purely because so far there's no sign of anyone from the games after MK2. Also the Batman villain style character origins are a fun twist.
The series needs a serious reboot and to cut the chaff in their character roster, this could do both.

Y'know, I'll bet cash money that it still turns out there's a supernatural element to all this. Shang Tsung will still be a sorcerer or something. Maybe the whole Outworld thing is still there, just as a surprise.
I still doubt this is a movie, if it is it'll be one of those straight to DVD ones i would think. Nobody cares about MK these days except for old fans who played it 15 years ago on super nintendo when the game didnt suck ass.
Hate to say it, but the game sucked ass then too. The fatalities covered up for the terrible gameplay.
MK > SF
Mortal Kombat is right alongside Killer Instinct in the ridiculously rose coloured glasses department. They were both games based on gimmicks that are no longer unique or even interesting, and for either to survive in a new form they would have to be so different from the originals that they may as well be different series altogether.
Nope.
I still play MKII pretty regularly on PSN, and have enjoyed every incarnation of the series thus far with the exceptions of Armageddon and DC Universe.
I stand by my original statement.

I mean I can't say I care much for MK or SF. But I will say SF is the better made game.
You know, I probably would have been happy as hell about this trailer if they did four things.

2. They're both ugly, who cares which one is ugly by birth and which one after mutilating himself?
3. Why not?
4. Johnny Cage is terrible, shut up.
1. Scorpion is overused to the point of where he is as "terrible" as any other character. Making him into a pacifist criminal who the cops manipulate just continues the downward spiral. And sorry, "intel."
Kano already has the criminal angle, you might as well use him.
2. Obviously I care. And I want to stick true to the characters. Reptile was a lizardman, first and foremost. That was his "thing." (With his secondary "thing" being that he was the last of his race.). Even beyond that, the new concept for him is terrible: A deformed serial killer is a huge downgrade. Might as well use a different character for that. Like, say, Baraka, who was already a monstrous looking human guy with murderous tendencies.
3. Because they're unnecessary changes. As I said, there's plenty of popular human and near-human characters that can be adapted without completly changing everything that ever made the character what it was. I mean, take reptile. Previously, the lizardman thing was the source of EVERYTHING that made him unique in the games. His long tongue he used as a weapon, his acidic spit, his inhuman animal attacks... What is he now? An ugly human who eats people's heads? What's the point of calling him Reptile then? What the hell is even his hook as an actual fighter now?
4. He's just as "terrible" as all the other characters. Why bother adding him back into the mythos if you're just going to instantly slaughter him in the backstory. It's a waste of resources.
Also when I say MK > SF, obviously I am not referring to them on a technical level
Of course the Mortal Kombat games aren't as technically proficient or mind-numbingly complex as Street Fighter
But at the end of the day, either playing with a bunch of my friends or going through single-player stuff (and later MKs really excelled with this, especially in Deception), at the end of the day I simply have more fun with Mortal Kombat then I will ever have with a Street Fighter, combo systems and whatnot be damned
And when it's all said and done, I'm going to prefer the game that's more fun over the game that is more nuanced and intricate
Seriously, when people bitch about infinites or broken combo systems, all I can think is "Who gives a fuck?" If you're playing on a profesionally competitive level you probably stopped having fun a long time ago anyways, and as long as the series inspires fun play sessions with friends it's golden

Johnny Cage's death was pretty well done. The final cigar drag before coughing up blood.
Wish they hadn't showed his head cut off, though, would have preferred him to pop back up.
That looks to be a lot of heavy talent to be throwing around for a game teaser, too.
