I hope something comes of this though.
I'm a pretty big fan of the original Mortal Kombat movie and I loved the fight with Johnny Cage and Scorpion.
As far as the games are concerned I stopped playing after 3, I don't know why but thats just what happened
If we're comparing arcade releases then SF2 had like 2 viable characters, 1 if you're considering Guile's handcuffs and throw bug. It was completely worthless for competitive play, which is why nobody plays it competitively. Mortal Kombat 2 had a lot of broken stuff as well, and the controls weren't perfect, but it was playable and AT THE TIME there was no reason that it couldn't have been improved the same way Street Fighter 2 was.
Second, Guile's handcuffing - while amusing to scrubs - wasn't a viable move (unlike, say, any of the infinite juggles in MK2) because of the difficulty in executing it. Your opponent had to be asleep at the wheel (you couldn't even execute it as part of a combo string) to get caught by it.
As for character viability, that's a whole 'nother thread worth of debate.
That's Champion Edition, which is a far cry from The World Warrior. And while handcuffs weren't so easy, his throw bug wasn't impossible to pull off in a game and was basically an auto-win from anywhere.
And blatant and easily set up infinites have never been a problem for Capcom fighters.
It's academic, though. Mortal Kombat had neither a dedicated Japanese playerbase nor an international playerbase mature enough to stick it out over the years, so the actual tourney play the games got is fairly limited, which makes it impossible to compare to Street Fighter from that standpoint.
I'm sure we'd agree on most points anyway. Mortal Kombat was a bad game, Mortal Kombat 2 was tolerable, it was only by the time Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 came out that it was obvious to everyone that Boon and Tobias had other things on their minds and couldn't care less about what went on during the fights. I only argue against the assertion that it was more terrible than other games at the time, and that Street Fighter 2 was a good game and the success that followed it wasn't at least 50% happy accident -- don't forget that SNK was doing most everything Capcom was doing first, and sometimes better.
Another valid point. Mortal Kombat 2 in particular wasn't so overwhelmingly broken that you couldn't play it and have fun well before someone decided they needed to learn a few infinites.
It seems weird to me that I'm like, the only person on the internet that was like "Fuck Yeah" when they revealed Scorpion and it was Don "The Dragon" Wilson. The whole trailer was built to reveal the guy, and he turns around and I'm like "Is that The Fucking Dragon?" and then I find out I'm the lame one because nobody else is asking that question.
Although it does muddy the waters a little. The guy who directed the Fame remake directed this. I don't know if this guy understands intentional irony. This trailer doesn't feel like it for a large amount of the runtime. But then he casts Don Wilson as Scorpion, and I can't tell if he's being a smartass about it or if he just honestly thinks it'd be the most awesome thing ever to relaunch Mortal Kombat as a David Fincher Fever Dream starring Don "The Dragon" Wilson as the main character.
that said, the only way this thing works is if it Snakes on a Plane's itself. There's no way you can take this shit at face value.
So far as the games go, MKII was a fun half hour at the arcade. Yeah, it was broken, but that was the fun, for me. Going on a string of wins as Liu Kang or Sub Zero, having someone kick my ass with Kitana or Baraka, switching up and trying to find the cheesedick move to get them back.
But they're really shitty, clunky fighters. They get by on design and charm and nostalgia/name recognition.
I'm sure we'd agree on most points anyway. Yeah, I think we're mostly agreeing, if seeing things from slightly different angles. While we have SNK on the table, though: SNK's panning cameras were sweet. That's the kind of gimmick I can get behind - something that adds to the experience without trying to hold an otherwise shaky enterprise together.
The vast majority of people don't really give a shit whether a fighting game is a viable tournament candidate.
Well, is it fair to say that the vast majority of gamers probably don't give a shit about arcade fighters anymore anyway? I mean, it's pretty time consuming to get good enough at, say, Street Fighter IV and play against people online without just getting your face repeatedly beat in.
The majority of players who do put the time into making themselves competitive in arcade fighters I'd say do care that the tournament scene remains healthy around their game of choice, and nowadays I think most folks also expect the game to support said scene in terms of it's content.
* They shot the short film over two days on two RED cameras
* Started in early April and it took 2 months to do the post production. Most people donated their time. The short was made for $7,500
* Knew if he was going to get a chance at a genre picture, he’d have to show he could do it on his own. This is a calling card for a chance at making the next Mortal Kombat feature film and it’s his vision for how he’d do it.
* No one at any studio knew he was doing the short
* Oren Uziel wrote the short. He’s currently listed on IMDb to write the next Mortal Kombat movie at Warner Bros.
* Says he wants to make a movie that balances the real world with the mysticism and the special powers. Compares it to the way Harry Potter exists in two worlds. As in there are two universes that coexist with each other.
* Confirms “fatalities” are definitely in his movie. He wants to put them in the tournament in an “organic way”
* Definitely would use “get over here” (the classic line from the game)
* Michael Jai White plays Jax Briggs in the short and he’d definitely be a part of the feature.
* Says Scorpion is the bad guy and will stay a bad guy
* They only had 4 hours to shoot the big fight scene

They'd be crazy to turn him down after pulling that off. Apparently the guy knows how to budget money, too.
And that entire interview is great, read the whole thing.

I like that interview. I really hope he gets to make the movie.

When you look at the utter garbage people waste millions on making, that's downright inspirational. Robert Rodriguez school of film making. Granted, it involved a ton of favors and volunteer work, but hey.
Yeah, that's a completely insane budget for something like that. I would have expected 10 times that, and even then it would have been pretty conservative. I guess the "most people donated their time" part makes it more understandable.
I agree the namedropping was kinda ridiculous. They had the right amount of subtlety with Jax and the letters being faded from his door. Though to be honest, had they not said the one guy was Reptile I would not have even guessed. I thought both he and Baraka were Kabal before they got to the name and the blades.
this exactly what i thought as well
hi5
EDIT: terrible TOTP
so um, here is why it needs a reboot, for those wondering
As said before, that's not an accurate screen, as it's not actually from any game. (It's fake)
This image is more accurate as it has one version of every unique character. (Which is still a fucking lot)
Yeah I literally just watched that. It actually looks ... not terrible ... dare I say even like it might be fun. I don't expect a tournament level fighter from MK, but for the series I don't really care as long as it's fun. Going back to 2D is what I needed them to do for me to really enjoy it again. I have a huge soft spot for MK because MK2 is what got me into fighting games. But I really hated the 3D ones after 4, even though I've played them all.
Edit: Not that 4 was particularly great, it was just not as terrible as the others.
Okay, if it cost 7500 to make a trailer like that, WB HAS to have cash laying around to make this movie instead of shitfest romantic comedies or godawful popcorn flicks.

I imagine the short was only $7500 to make because it was a lot of the people working on it did so in at a reduced or nonexistant pay-rate BECAUSE it was a short. If it was a full blown movie, I'd expect the cost to skyrocket exponentially.

edit: Also
Both very good Martial Artists and an awesome cheographer.
Probably helped in making it as good looking as possible while saving money.
The entire short is carried a lot by the cast.

But this looks way more professional than either of those did, and seven minutes worth with a fight scene like that...that's no joke

Yessssssssssssss
holy shit that Kung Lao fatality!
Can't we find a happy medium between a rehash and an opposite spectrum reimagining?
Also, didn't Kung Lao have that fatality in Mortal Kombat: Deception?
EDIT: It was MK: Shaolin Monks that he had that fatalty. Check the video at 2:55 in.

MK vs. DCU sold well despite being total shit
I am glad to see this, old characters, old style fatalities instead of that awful Armageddon idea and the toned-down DCU ones
Dear Mortal Kombat Team,
Please bring back the Krypt with a bunch of unlockable MK shit
Unconditionally Yours,
UnbreakableVow
I think that they're going for that nostalgia angle.
I mean, that's pretty much all they have. Mostly.
edit: actually, today has been a pretty crazy day. RB3 and a new MK announced?
Crazy.
Because it looks like Deception with all the classic characters in proper HD
That's like sex to me
Good sex
having to go through that terrible Konquest mode to unlock characters and stuff
Fake Edit: or maybe that was armageddon
I enjoyed the hell out of Deception's because I honestly enjoy the world of Mortal Kombat
Armageddon's was like Shaolin Monks but a lot, lot shittier
I hope we see another Shaolin Monks-style game one day
Shao Kahn
Raiden
Johnny Cage
Sub-Zero
Reptile
Nightwolf
Mileena
Kung Lao
Sektor
Well, they can't all be winners I guess

Of course we can't have a Native American in the game without him having magical shaman powers. He can't just be a guy with an ethnic background.
'course I suppose we also can't have an Asian in this game who doesn't know martial arts, so I guess that blade cuts both ways.
