Eating after a fast

So I've had a nasty stomach flu for the past few days, and haven't eaten a proper meal since Monday night (3 1/2 days ago). I've had bits of fruit, apple sauce, toast, etc since then, but nothing really agrees with me, and eating usually results in painful bloating (which I'm guessing is a result of barely eating). The flu itself seems to be gone, but I'm still feeling fairly weak from not eating. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do to actually get a decent amount of food into my body?

Thanks

Try some soup and build up from there.

Whatever's closest to pedialyte, which means watery food with a low amount of salt

Nothing with too much fat; you need a bit of time to get your pancreas in gear

What's happened is your intestine was stripped of its outer lining, which means that you're much less able to absorb nutrients. You may even become lactose intolerant temporarily if you weren't already. What you should prioritize first is rehydrating yourself, which you shouldn't do with pure water but with salt water, soup like magic toaster recommends. Clearish foods are good. Step it up with some liquid protein, like yogurt and small servings of jello if you want, then maybe go for some whole grains. If you can stand that stuff then you're pretty much over it already.

But yeah, watch out for milk for a while and try to limit your fat and acid intake.

This is all very helpful, thank you.

He'll probably be okay with yogurt because of the probiotics regardless of the milkfat. I'd probably recommend yogurt after he can get down some soup too.

If this was not the H/A thread I'd try to investigate the probiotics claim, because last I heard there were some questions about its validity. In any case, that would be overthinking what is obviously a minor issue.

I'm kind of disappointed in myself because I used to know more specifics about rehydration and renutrition like potassium and phosphorous intake and likely foods but now I don't so whatever

Gatorade/PowerAid, crackers (saltines), chicken broth, beef broth, rice. If you feel up to solid foods, white bread, chicken, Pork Tenderloin is also good (but only tenderloin at this point), some potatoes (mashed, and no skins). Avoid seasonings, oils, and acids.

The main theme is Bland. Your intestines got shit kicked, and as the others have noted they needs some nice neutral foods to allow them to get back into the swing of things.

Probiotics are fancy labeling terms and nothing more. Do the KISS diet, or keep it simple stupid.

It's not, but it's touted around way more than it's worth.

They're basically useful after getting sick, which is why hospitals give you that disgusting flavorless yogurt when you're there. As for regulating your digestive system because you don't poop much? You're right.

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17962710

Like I said, mostly extreme cases such as being extremely sick, or extreme exertion are the best places for this. There are a few others so I'd wager the research is valid. Again, don't use it to regulate your poop, so paying $8 a carton for yogurt may be a bit too much for something like that. But if you're sick, it's probably going to help you a bit with GI issues.

BRAT is also the sound you'll make if you eat anything else.

BRAT can also be extended to BRATTY to include tea and yogurt

    Toast.

oh good, wasn't sure about that one. Wheat toast or multigrain, under normal conditions, will nourish the "probiotics" in your colon, which will poop out FFAs for your colonic epithelial cells to use for secondary nourishment, which will help your colon recover from what I'd guess you'd call a "diarrheal enema"
