So the videos make the game look like some KotOR mod of Borderlands.
That's not such a bad thing per se, but what about all the other features which were intended to make this game stand out?
Can anyone confirm/dispell the following;
- Starship travel between planets/locations in a large universe
- Space combat/free-flight?
- Organic evolving/modular weaponry that "feeds" on things for ammo?
- Planetary/atmospheric vehicles?
- Player customization beyond equipment loadout (stats? skills? RPG-like progression trees?)
- Anything else BESIDES standard FPS gameplay in a sci-fi setting?
Yes, though not a large universe

Yes...sort of. Kind of FPS/RPG/Space-Sim hybrid.
Fuck it, i'll go download the Gamersgate version and update you all.
Awesome - I hope it kicks ass, we'll be anxiously awaiting your review and impressions.
Wow, that's cool there's an English patch for this. The real question is whether or not getting it, jumping through the hoops to patch it, then dealing with the inevitable game-crippling bugs are worth the effort. I'm leaning to yes, since even at it's worst the bugs in Boiling Point just made it that much more surreal.
Can you not put the translation mods over it to improve the translation?
The translation mod doesn't do any custom translation. It just copies over the translation files that were already packaged with the game and were not implemented.
I had a chance to try this out, it has some kind of horrendous mouse acceleration. It's the worst I've ever felt. Is there a way to fix this?
Hah, this is an odd little game. I sort of like it, despite the terrible English translations (I'm quite sure the mods are better, according to forum opinion though). Theres a good bit of depth to it, as it seems to mix rpg/fps aspects. Amusingly there's even a film grain like mass effect.
Will update more later on, only just started. To fix the mouse sensitivity, go into advanced in options and ramp up the sensitivity to something around keyboard level. It's a bit silly in the starter state. Turning feels sluggish before improving the options.
The main problem with the new English version is that they cut out the Russian voices and didn't replace them with anything. Patching the Russian version keeps the original voices but adds subtitles which is the best setup, so far. It's good to see the game getting an easier-to-acquire release. It was previously only available by hunting down a Russian copy on eBay.
It's a fun ass game despite it's obvious flaws. It could have turned out much worse. If you can look past a lack of polish, it's the type of game that deserves to be played just so people realize how much potential games with this wild genre mix have. If the game is easily modded, which it seems it may be, then there could be some amazing things done with it. So many franchises would fit perfect with the fps/spacesim combo.

Huh. I had no idea this ever came out.
So it basically ended up being like Mass Effect, if Mass Effect was STALKblivion? Because I don't know that I can say no to that.
The RPG elements aren't really that deep. It's more of an FPS with a small upgrade tree for things like run speed. It's like if Stalker made you take a spaceship between each section. The spacesim part is shallow but it's not bad and it's just neat to go from planet to space then back to a planet surface. There's some side-questing you can do in space as well, but like I said it's not that deep. It's also great that ships have actual explorable interiors, even if they're not that intricately detailed. The graphics aren't blockbuster level or anything, but they're not that bad for being a lower budget Eastern-European game from a company that went under almost immediately after release.
I might have a look at this game despite the somewhat lukewarm reviews since I've been dying for a game that blends rpg elements and space sims. I just want to be able to buy a ship and walk around inside it just as I did in Star Wars Galaxies.

So this is really neat... up until the point it corrupts all your saves and you lose five hours of progress.
I was just about to leave the first planet too. Now loading a save-game just crashes the game.
Also there's some weird random frame-rate drops (sometimes even freezing for up to 5 minutes).
So the videos make the game look like some KotOR mod of Borderlands.

Personally I really really like this game. It's a unique sort of game like Boiling Point but WAAAAAAAAAY more stable and doesn't have nearly the same crazy issues that BP did.
I totally recommend this for anyone looking for an interesting fps/rpg/spaceflight experience.
I bought this as well and I suck at it. Having trouble even in the tutorial. I'll have to give it another shot. I discovered quickly that the opening cutscene isn't skippable.

Haha, I love this. This is the games complete features listed on Gamersgate.
Precursors, predecessors, the legend of galaxy… Who are carrying the forebear’s genes among existing races, we can suppose only…
Worlds of galaxy are everlasting, beautiful, unique and dangerous. Some of them are inhabited, some ruined and deserted, other - just a smugglers trans-shipment stations.
Some worlds are only at the beginning of evolution, other are falling into decay. Only when you’ll pass through all these worlds, sense a heat of blazing lava-seas and chilling cold of abysses, see the stark heavens, you will realize the real power of nature. Only when you’ll meet corrupt judges, mendacious politicians, unselfish protectors and cruel tyrants you’ll understand passions of society. When you’ll reach an unexplored sectors of galaxy and come across a mysterious natural phenomenon, fly through the tail of the comet or dive into the casual portal, only then you’ll perceive the infinite depth and diversity of the universe.
But this is just a prospection and nobody knows what exactly this journey will be, we can only assure you that it will be unforgettable…

You know, if the translation in the game reads like that, it may not be a bad thing. It has a nice, exotic out of sync flavor that could really work for sci fi.
So if I wanted to pick this up, is that Gamersgate version adequate, with some sort of additional patching going on, or is there something to looking for the Russian version and then doing some additional patching?
I just started downloading the Gamer's Gate version after reading the RPS article on it and thinking that it sounds like the game I've always wanted to play; What I wanted Mass Effect and Freelancer to be like.
Someone in the RPS comments has a way to get the russian version easily, and the forums for the game itself have a lot of info and you can talk to the guys who did the original english fan patch and who are now working on an over-all gameplay fanpatch.
I will tinker with this and see how bad it is. Apparently the Russian native version is only $8 and has a couple of game patches that the english version lacks. Hopefully we'll see how this goes.
Simultaneously good, terrible (especially some weird grammar), and hilarious:
Another screen-shot, just because the starting city reminds me so much of Tatooine:
-It's rather fun, if you get past the poor translation. There's a linear storyline, but there's also sub quests that you can pick up by talking to the people around town, or in the pocket of villages on the world. The quests are sort of "do x, complete y" sort of quests you'd typically find in a game of GTA.
-The worlds are actually quite large...or at least large enough to be played around with. You can explore at your leisure, but I wouldn't recommend doing so without a vehicle and weaponry.
-The space section of the game is sort of gimmicky...you're given a ship and are allowed to travel the cosmos, after a suitable amount of what can only be described as piloting tutorial missions are done. Every space station has an interior (though I think they're the same map layout), and you can also wander about and store stuff in your own ship. There's a very basic, sort of elite style, space sim underneath it, and had more development time been given this would probably have been what they were aiming for.
-Graphically it can be very pretty. They've done well to incorporate the film grain effect into the game, and generally everywhere you visit looks very interesting.
-It's a bit broken. There's definitely a game, far greater than what was given to us, striving to get out. There's so much potential in the game that seems to be squandered, but what you get is generally good enough.
-It's brutally hard, even on easy. Each part of your body can take damage seperately, the result meaning that a damaged leg can cause you to limp, damaged arms cause accuracy problems, and so on. You really need to use cover to full advantage, and open desert warfare can be deadly.
-Weapons feel underpowered somewhat, however upgrades can improve results.
-The translation is terrible. I think they just run this through a google translator without bothering to QA the results. Entire sentences can generally not make any sense, but i've not encountered so far a game breaking scenario.
-I think only one voice actor was used for cut scenes, which is hilarious.
A 2007 release given the scale of what they're doing, cross-platform development and being in pre-alpha stage seems rather optomistic though. We shall see.

This sounds like it may scratch a very specific gaming itch for me. I think I can endure the poor translation.
It reminds me of Space Rangers 2, which was also from a Russian developer IIRC. The bad translation actually seemed appropriate sometimes as just the bizarre way space aliens might speak. It got to be pretty troublesome in some of the text-based sequences though.
I wonder, do any of these developers ever pay for a second-pass translation service? I couldn't translate Russian but I could sure as hell take all of this and make it sound like a native English speaker had written it.
Wouldn't the English mod and official translation be largely the same? I thought the mod just used the subtitle files that were already in the game. Certainly the official English release would use those same files.

These developers have a fraction of the budget of big, AAA development houses, your BioWares, Bethsoft, what-have-you. On the one hand, they can experiment and do wild shit because they don't have to sell six hojillion copies to the mass market just to break even, but on the other they're necessarily going to be a bit more... rough.

I think I'd rather take the experimentation and whatever kinks that might bring than going with the dull stuff that most of the big developers tend to put out, nowadays.
We need to keep this thread alive. I'd really like to see at least a small PA community going for this game. I know a handful of us either have it or are already playing it.
Those crazy, ambitious Ruskies. I've actually started to learn Russian recently just so that I don't have to fuck around with wacky English translations. Russian games tend to be incredibly cool, if broken and are totally worth learning a second language for.
Also, I'll be able to talk shit to all the Russians in Eve.
This game sounds like a winner, I'll have to buy a copy when I get home.
