Everyone should play Silent Storm. An X-Com game done with that combat engine would be the best thing ever.
A simple remake of X-Com with a new interface and some tweaking would be good enough.
Yes they're saying that the new X-Com will remain "true to the spirit" of the original game. No, I'm not sure I even believe that, that marketing speak could be used to make it a freaking Dance game if they wanted.
I'll start playing this once I wrap up Point Lookout and Broken Steel in Fallout 3, and do the last couple hours of Metroid: Other M. If this thread sinks by then, I'll give it a bump when I start playing.

Xenonauts is a single-player strategy game due for release in 2011. Primarily a strategy game, it sits astride several genres and so we’ve coined the phrase ‘planetary defence simulator’ to describe it. The game puts the player in control of an organisation tasked with defending the planet against extraterrestrial invasion; establishing bases all across the world that house aircraft, scientists, technicians and soldiers and using them as staging posts to defend the skies against alien incursion and strike at crashed UFOs or terror sites on the ground.
The game is heavily inspired by the classic X-Com / UFO: Enemy Unknown, released in the mid-90s by the now-defunct Microprose. It is not a straight remake; much has changed and been updated despite the core mechanics remaining similar – so much so, in fact, that we prefer the term ‘reimagining’ to ‘remake’.
The game consists of two main elements, the Geoscape and the Combat Viewer:
Geoscape: The Geoscape is the strategic command layer and management interface of the game. It allows the player to build and manage their bases, monitor the organisation’s finances and control what the Xenonaut scientists research and what their technicians build. It also allows players to deploy the organisation’s aircraft, whether they be fighters tasked with intercepting and destroying alien craft, or dropships that ferry Xenonaut strike teams to combat zones.
Unlike its predecessor, Xenonauts will also feature tactical air combat between squadrons of human interceptors and alien UFOs and their escorts. Taking place in pauseable real-time, the air combat will be fast-paced and will allow players to exercise their tactical brains both in the skies and on the ground.
Combat Viewer: The Combat Viewer displays the turn-based ground combat element of the game that is initiated when the player deploys a strike team into a combat zone. Strike teams consist of soldiers and vehicles that are armed and armoured on the Geoscape from a selection of over sixty different items of equipment that can be researched and unlocked over the course of the game. There are several different types of missions in the game, each of which has different victory conditions and requires different tactics to master.
Your success or failure in combat missions will affect the strategic position of the Xenonauts either positively or negatively; capturing live aliens or recovering their craft and artefacts gives your scientists access to new research, while soldiers level up and improve their statistics as they gain battlefield experience and rank. Losing soldiers or vehicles in action is costly both financially and militarily, and failure (or the death of civilians) in ground missions will negatively affect the local government’s opinion of you.
