I'm confused because you pay at the start (where there is a space for tipping on the bill), but then they bring the food out AND they ask you how you are doing partway through the meal.'
I'm not sure if I'm in a coffee shop type tipping situation or a restaurant type tipping situation.
Most of the Cosis I've been to you usually get the food first yourself and pay afterwards, and no one comes to check up on you later. I'd assume this is their standard protocol, which is why they ask for a tip when you pay, since that's usually the end of their interaction with you.
Do you have an actual waiter or something at this Cosi? Do they clean the table up after you or do you clean your stuff yourself? I'd say just drop a few bucks in the tip jar at the front on your way out if you want to leave a tip, otherwise forget about it.

What's the average cost for the meal? You pay and they bring it out and then that's it? Do you wait and they hand it to you?
