"They could not have been more offended, confused, enraged and startled. . . . There was a moment of stunned silence . . . and then an eruption of angry voices from all over the fifteen-hundred-person audience. The kids in their Luke Skywalker pajamas (cobbled up from older brother's castoff karate gi) and the retarded adults spot-welded into their Darth Vader fright-masks howled with fury. But I stood my ground, there on the lecture platform of the World Science Fiction Convention, and I repeated the words that had sent them into animal hysterics:

'Star Wars is adolescent nonsense; Close Encounters is obscurantist drivel; 'Star Trek' can turn your brains to purée of bat guano; and the greatest science fiction series of all time is 'Doctor Who!' And I'll take you all on, one-by-one or in a bunch to back it up!'"

Okay! Right, first, general background!
Wikipedia wrote:
Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC. The programme depicts the adventures of a mysterious alien time-traveller known as "the Doctor" who travels in his space and time-ship, the TARDIS, which normally appears from the exterior to be a blue 1950s police box. With his companions, he explores time and space, solving problems, facing monsters and righting wrongs.

The current TARDIS crew:
wedding_09.jpg

The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) is definitely an old soul in a young body. He's considerably more alien than predecessor David Tennant, and rocks a mean bowtie [strike]and fez[/strike]. He's also got the best dance moves ever.

Amy [strike]Williams[/strike] Pond (Karen Gillan) first met the Doctor at age seven, was promised travels in the TARDIS--and then had to wait 14 years, and then two more on top of that. After helping the Doctor save the universe, she's said "goodbye" to her old life to travel with "her boys" in the TARDIS.

Rory [strike]Williams[/strike] Pond (Arthur Darvill) met the Doctor at 21 as well, and started off on an awkward footing with him once he discovered the kind of danger Amy had been in traveling with the Doctor. He's now a valued member of the team, even if he doesn't always see eye-to-eye with the Doctor.

How do I watch this incredible series?

A Christmas Carol, the Christmas 2010 special, has aired in the US and the UK (and doesn't need spoiler boxes).

Series 6 will air sometime around Easter next year. Word of Moffat has promised that the "big plot arc" for series 6 will be the identity of the person or persons who destroyed the TARDIS in series 5, as well as recurring character River Song. As of August 29, it's been announced that series 6 is going to be split in half, with seven episodes in the spring and six in the fall.

We now have a trailer!

Rules!

It's no longer required to spoiler tag stuff related to series 5. Please spoiler tag anything related to the plot of the Christmas special or series 6.

The spoiler rule in the OP is off. BBC America has shown up to The Hungry Earth, so we need spoilers for Cold Blood and Vincent and the Doctor as well at the moment, if we're being consistent with the previous thread.

I liked this past episode quite a bit.
My first impression of the preview was that all those nasties had gotten together to put whatever is in the Panda-McGuffin-icon in there and get it shut.

Which of course means it's The Doctor.

Thumbs down on the new look for Silurians. The episode itself is really good, though. It's funny to me that each layer of the Earth is hiding some hibernating race of animal-people, what with the Rachnos stowed away in the core of the planet.

It would be interesting if there isn't anything in there but all the Daleks and Cybermen and stuff are coming there to actually imprison the Doctor there instead.

This season's easily my favourite so far, though they often get skewed by the finale episodes, so I hope this finale's as awesome as it could be.
    EVERY MONSTER EVER
could be done really well or really badly. I'll assume really well, as we're dealing with Moffat and he deserves the benefit of the doubt. SO EXCITED.

    People headbutting
    James Corden
can never be a bad thing. I would happily watch an hour long show that consisted of nothing more than people headbutting
    James Corden.
I'd even be happy with a spin-off show where more people come along and kick him while he's down.

For the sake of the thread, yes.
He was bearable in Gavin and Stacey but has since suffered from horrible over-exposure. He's nowhere near as funny as he thinks he is, his chat show is the worst thing since Hitler and I have no idea why he's seemingly been appointed the unofficial England World Cup mascot. 'Ha ha look at me I'm really fat but I just don't care' does not a comedy career make.

I'd never seen James Corden in anything else, so Doc Who was my first exposure to him. He was perfectly fine, delivered well-written funny lines in a humorous way, and fit into the episode perfectly well. He does strike me as the kind of comedian I wouldn't find at all funny with his own material, but his presence in this episode was completely inoffensive.

He's been massively overexposed and his schtick wears very thin.

When the best praise anyone can muster is that he is 'bearable' in Gavin and Stacey it's pretty damning.

I thought Corden did quite well in this episode. He played the part perfectly.

If the complaint is over-exposure, though, I'll just note that I've never heard of him before, so perhaps that particular problem is localized to the UK?

Never really liked Corden either, the whole "I'm funny because I'm fat and don't care" thing just never worked for me. Have to admit though that I liked his performance, and his whole spiel in Dr Who confidential about how Matt Smith won Junior Master Chef and is now going to use his fame to get on Celebrity Master Chef was pretty funny. He seems like someone who is funnier when spinning lies rather than flat out trying to make you laugh.

No it's Corden. In Gavin and Stacey he was okay, as the part was well-written. When he had the opportunity to star in his show and movie (and have much more control over content) it showed that he has no personal comic talent.

Which leaves you with a performer whose USP is 'performs averagely at best'. You might as well hire someone else who'll do just as well without people who've been burned by his other material reacting viscerally to their appearance.

    Essentially he adds nothing.

    Reiterating my wild theory.

I think the pandorica is a time window leading to the most dangerous thing in the galaxy. The Doctor sans his *first* life. If that is killed or destroyed somehow, practically the entire universes timeline would be rewritten, hence the giant 'cracks', wiping out planets that either directly or indirectly have been saved by the doctor. I think this is encouraged by the repeated shots of the first doctors face this season, so the new audience will recognize whats going on when they open the pandorica and see an old man.
