Manually adjusting the focus of your eyes?

billwillbillwill Registered User regular
edited June 2010 in Help / Advice Forum
Pretty simple. Can anyone else do this? I can look at something, and gradually make it more and more fuzzy, and bring things into or out of focus.

I talked to a few people, and they said they can't do it. I'm sure others can though. I'm just wondering how I can do this?

(Just to note, I can also do this weird thing where I shake my eyes back and forth very quickly. It freaks people out. I would also like to know how I can do this.)

I hate you and you hate me.

I can stare at something and make everything else blurry if I want, but I don't think I can make just the object I'm looking at blurry.

Well i can go from infocus to fuzzy quite easily, but i can't do it gradually, its one or the other. Probably looks like i'm trying to go cross-eyed when i do it.

Yeah, I can do it slowly if I want, and stop at different levels along the way.

Let's say I'm looking at a wall, and I hold my hand up to my left. While looking at the wall I can bring my hand into focus without looking at it.

same here, I thought everyone could do this. I can focus as slowly as I want/need and have always been able to do it.

They do slightly... that's what focus is, aiming both your eyes at the same point.

You just have a greater control over the muscles in your eyes and you're able to flex/relax them enough to alter the shape of your eyes. It's not that uncommon.

Yes, some people just have good control of their eyes. I can diverge and converge my eyes. I can cross one and keep the other straight. I can keep the convergence of my eyes the same and adjust the focus.

EDIT: Chanus, you are wrong. Convergence isn't the same as focus.

It sounds like people are talking about different things in this thread.

Some of you are talking about seeing double of an object, like relaxing your eyes so there is two of whatever you are looking at. This is easy to do manually.

But some of you are using the word fuzzy, like blurry. Like if you needed glasses and weren't wearing them, things would be fuzzy, but you wouldn't necessarily see double.

I don't think it's possible to blur and unblur your vision (like, glasses on, glasses off), but it's very easy to make yourself see double of something. This is just crossing and uncrossing your eyes.

    Right?

The vibrating eyes thing is something a lot of people can do, it's actually not that hard.

I do it by letting my eyes unfocus, and cross a bit, then quickly alternate between focusing and unfocusing them.

And letting your eyes move from focused to unfocuesed is how you see things "fuzzy". Also, not that hard to do. This used to happen to me in class a lot, as I found it really hard to pay attention, and would try weird things out to pass the time. I can even unfous so much that I am literally not looking at anything. It's kind of weird, but when it happens, it only lasts until I actually look at something.

I did it while I was reading your post.

It's a lot harder than converging/diverging my eyes though.

If you think you're converging/crossing your eyes, just close or cover one and force the other to go out of focus. I find it quite easy.

    Right?

I can blur my eyes and see double, but not separately. I probably can't try to adjust my eyes to try to defocus separately without getting a headache.

Actually I can blur my eyes without seeing double if I go at it slowly. Not easy to do though. I have to focus on relaxing my eyes instead of purposefully messing my vision up.

I'd suspect it's probably easier for people who have/had corrective lenses, since their eyes have been more exercised in frequent focus changes. I can do it with one or both eyes quite easily after wearing glasses for about 10 years and then having LASIK surgery (I no longer require corrective lenses).

You change the shape of your eyes to do this, just like your eyes change shape to focus on things nearer or farther way. I can do this, but not very well on things very near (I have to do it in reverse, and I'm not nearly as good at that).

I can also cross my eyes, and it's a different thing.

Fear not, just as stated with the eyes 'vibrating', anyone in the thread can learn Gihgehls' techniques with a little patience and effort!

But, can you forcefully constrict and dilate your eyes?

I fall into the category of "You mean not everyone can do that?"

Kind of like glitting (however you spell it). Flexing your tongue so your saliva glands spray a stream of water out from under your tongue. Very easy for me to do, and can get it to spray pretty far. Is this the same situation cause when I tried to show people how to do it, they always did it wrong.

I have perfect vision, and always have had perfect vision.

In fact, I'm the anomaly in my family. EVERYONE on both sides of my family needs glasses except me... My kids are a crapshoot, so far, two don't need them, and one does. We'll see how that plays out later in life.

I don't know if it is possible to have direct control over that, but I can meditate and enter different states of mind which affect the dilation of the pupil. One such state is "horny."
