As we've seen from tech demos alone, the 3DS can easily reproduce PSP-level graphics. The addition of the nub means even with the touchscreen completely removed from the picture, the controls are now exactly a one for one recreation of the PSPs. The top screen (which is also wider like a psp screen...hmmm...), in addition to being the 3D one, could play any psp game unchanged (much like the DS did for GBA games). Hardware limitations are now non-existent for 3rd party developers to port their games, and on top of it they can now cross-platform produce any PSP game for the 3DS. Every 3rd party developer is developing for the DS anyways because it's the biggest game in town, and Sony has had huge issues keeping 3rd parties interested in developing for the PSP. Now every 3rd party can cheaply port all their (mostly non-selling) PSP games over, slap a "3D" on the end of the name, and suddenly their games are playing to an exponentially larger install base. This is probably why so many third parties are happy- their dead end PSP games get new life on the 3DS. Multi-platform development is now possible for portables- but only in one direction. Unless Sony comes out with a two-screen system and on top of it adds some sort of hardware addition the 3DS can't reproduce (second analog nub), they're at best gonna have a DS clone with a vastly smaller install base. If they go too different to try to make platform exclusives a necessity they risk destroying the already-shakey relationship with third parties they have. They're basically in a catch-22 of Nintendo's making, and I love it.
I swear to god the 3DS was in every way a "fuck you" to the PSP. Every addition that the 3DS has was meant to fuck it over. Jesus Christ Nintendo is so fucking awesome
It's hilarious that Nintendo won last gen by going different, and they're gonna win next gen by homogenizing.
Only things I can think to add are the max cart size of the 3DS is about 200 MB bigger than a dual layered UMD, it is the size of the DS Lite with the battery of the DSi, and that the PSP's single screen is still bigger and a different aspect ratio.
You know, I'm sure its been said 100 times already, but the 3DS is more of a reaction to Apple and the iPhone actually (well, plus its just wicked cool).

I guess what she's saying is is that developers for mature titles on the DS are held by an unspoken rule that the DS does not cater to audiences looking for a hard M game and on top of that Nintendo at best silently disapproves of a grittier, more mature experience, so are held back by their own preconceptions of what a DS title is and make intentionally light M games on the DS. In other words, it says M on the box, but what you're really getting is hard T, and if this were on another console then the developer wouldn't feel that restraint and put across the game they want to make sans self-censorship
Which is an argument, if that's her argument, that has merit. I...guess.
I dont know the context of it, just what was posted on this page.
So who knows! Thats what I got from the statement, anyways.
I still have no context though.

Yeah, the problem is if she wanted to say that, she could've said... that. There's a lot of missing words to get to that point.

Sometimes she says not-dumb things in environments like interviews which imply she actually enjoys video games and isn't just a pair of breasts and a moderately pretty face

Yeah, she's not an idiot, save for a weird blindspot when it comes to Nintendo. She had a pretty asinine critique of SMG2 based on how colorful it was, amounting to an anonymous comment about something being kiddie.

The whole 3D camera thing (and the 3D display, too) seems like something Apple would kill to have first. This all just seems so big and important.

Most accounts of the 3DS technology complain that you can't move your head while playing (though in the same breath also say it isn't that big of a deal so who knows). Apple'll probably wait for something a little more streamlined. Something along the lines of a camera tracking you and adjusting the display as necessary.

I haven't had a chance to read through this thread yet, but I've played with the 3DS, so I'll be more than happy to answer any questions I can about it thus far. Well until I go to bed anyway, and then I'm going back to the show tomorrow morning so bear with me.
I just got home RIGHT NOW from the first day of E3, got to play a bit of the Kinect and the 3DS, who wants to touch me?.. I said who wants to fucking touch me?!
So since I've been gone all day and haven't had a chance to read up on any of the announcements or the threads here, what have I been missing?
BTW, the 3DS is fucking amazing in person!
How long did you have to wait for it?
Not at all, press get set right to the front of the line.
@Xenogears of Bore
Well that's the thing, you guys were sitting at home getting all the announcements delivered right to you, on the show floor you have no idea what announcements are being made until you see it on the floor. So I'm sure I missed TONS of announcements.
You got the expected list of 3DS development? That's the highlight of the home crowd so far.
3DS is the highlight of the show for the home crowd? It really is for me so far, sometimes it takes your eyes a few moments to get used to the 3D, sometimes you have to tilt your head a TINY bit to line it up like a magic eye, but once it kicks in your good and it looks great. And if you are having trouble getting the 3D to sync and are seeing double images, you can adjust the depth slider until the images come together for you. The graphics are stunning, they look to be just a bit better than Wii level, though it could be the small screen. But I was seeing things like bump mapping and really crisp visuals. When watching the Metal Gear video which was interactive allowing you to pan the camera, at times it felt like I could reach into the screen and pull out a little action figure snake.
But yes, the wide spread opinion from the home crowd is that 3DS was easily the biggest thing at the show.
A lot of posts even from non nintendo fanboys are just waiting for the date and the price...with the date being the more important of the two.
You get a chance to see the RE video?
That video does not even do it the slightest amount of justice, and yes I saw the RE video, it was a bit hard to get the 3D to work right on that one though, but the graphics were pants crappingly good for a handheld.
Basically techtv reborn. Very good for technology stuff but gaming is not a real strong suit. For instance they were pretty harsh on the 3DS despite not being able to see it.
Umm, how the goose can you be harsh on something you haven't seen yet?
People do it all the time 'round these parts
Anyway, I've seen, held, and played around with the 3DS and it is everything the rumors have said except it's Avatar style 3D, not flying at your face 3D. So whatever bullshit complaints shitty tech blogs that haven't even seen it or have but are being gooses about it can go to hell. Gizmodo said it looked better than the Wii but not as good as the PSP, in the same sentence. Then they bitched about jaggies. They are absolutely retarded, just look at the Metal Gear and Resident Evil screens/footage. The graphics are phenomenal, crisp, and they look even better in person with the 3D going.
Is the 3D similar to that one hidden picture 3D game?
I mean, with those graphics, I couldn't give a shit less even if the 3D sucks, that's a hell of a library they've got coming for it.
DJ HERO 3D
Yes, though I haven't tried every tech demo, some reports from the ones I haven't tried yet claimed that a few instances of things feeling like they pop out just a little bit, but I can't verify it. So far everything that I've seen is depth adding 3D like in Avatar, and when it works it feels like you could reach in and grab the characters.
Does anyone who collected baseball cards in the 90s remember those plastic image shifting/semi 3D cards? The 3D effect of the 3DS kind of reminds me of that.
The ports are certainly damn impressive (especially the new look of OoT and SF64), but I really want to see more of the original titles. I'm so excited to see Etrian Odyssey in 3D. That style seems absolutely perfect for this device.

That's because that's exactly what it is. To all of you who think it is like the 3D DSI game, you are wrong. The 3D effect actually has absolutely zero to do with the camera.
The 3DS renders two, slightly different pictures, one for each eye. It then draws them on the screen, interlaced. So, each letter being a pixel, L would be a pixel in the image for the right eye, and R for the left.

It then uses an overlay of essentially (in the same way that the LCD screen is essentially the same technology as your $1.00 solar calculator) the same technology as those old holographic baseball cards, which directs each column of pixels either to the left, or right.
Easy peasy.
[edit] Oops, I lied. What I just explained above is the lenticular version of glasses-less 3D. Apparently nintendo bought some paralax LCD tech from Sharp, and I assume they'd use that. Y'know.. Since they bought it..
The way a parallax barrier works is pretty much the exact opposite of a lenticular screen. With a lenticular screen, you are bending the light to either side to hit the proper eye, so to understand the effect, you'd trace a line from the lit pixel to the eye, through the barrier. To understand parallax you draw a line from the eye, through the barrier, to the pixel.
Drawing this top-down, instead of head on, now.
So my barrier doesn't line up like it should, but you can get the picture.
Again, the 3DS renders a slightly different picture for each eye.
There is a barrier (overlay) between the screen and the eye, that takes advantage of the slight gap between itself and the pixels, and the fact that your eye isn't lined up dead-on with any pixel. So the idea is that if you draw a line-of-sight from the left eye to any given pixel, it will only be able to see the L pixels. The barrier will get in the way of the R pixels. And the same for the right eye, when drawing a line of sight, those same barriers will block the L pixels. And because pixels (and therefore the barriers) are so very small, your eye jumps over the gaps caused by the barriers and stitches together two complete pictures from two slightly different viewpoints.
The clever thing with this is that if you make your paralax barrier an LCD screen instead of a static overlay, you can turn the barrier on and off, allowing each eye to see the whole screen, and bypassing the 3D effect.
If that doesn't make sense, ask questions and I'll try to explain it better.

Yeah, and that's kind of the craziest thing here.
Nobody was excited about the DS, there was no software for it, and now they're what, the best selling game system ever?
So this time around all the devs are getting in on the ground floor. They know it's going to be big, and they know launch window means huge sales. And Nintendo's the only game in town.
So if we're the kinda' dudes who'll immedietly flip the 3D slider to the off position, can we expect a sizable boost to battery life by not having to process all that extra 3D data? That'd be pretty sweet if we got 50% extra for disabling shit we don't want/can't use.

I kind of doubt it. It's listed as having an 800x240 screen even though it's visually 400x240. I'm not sure if it detects 3D being off and suddenly only renders on the left half of what it can display, for example.
Plus I don't think Nintendo would want there to be an incentive for devs to make games that don't use 3D (in order to save battery).
