If I purchase and download a ps1 game on my ps3, can I also do the same for my psp, or are they considered separate purchases? If I can get both, what are the chances the save files would be compatible, and I could swap them back and forth?

They are not considered separate purchases. The game can be copied from one to the other. I'm not as certain about the save files, because the PS3 and PSP handle the saves differently.

Basically your PSN account can be active on five devices at any given time. So, your PS3 and your PSP will be two devices total. You can deactivate devices to gain a slot back out of the five, though, but obviously any games purchased on that account would no longer be playable on the device that was deactivated.

If you buy a PS1 game on your PS3 you can transfer it to your PSP. Saves can be copied between systems as well.

There is a Playstation Store thread in G&T where you can get just about any PSN question you have answered.
