After having my 30 gig Video iPod since May, I've decided it's time to get it a protective case. I should have bought an Invisible Shield eight months ago, but didn't think about it and now it looks too bad to bother with one of those IMHO. Also, I don't feel like breaking out the Brasso to use on this thing, as something about rubbing an MP3 player with a mild adhesive I use for metal work and CDs doesn't sound like a good idea.
What I would really like is a case that would hide the scratches (not too bad, but still noticeable), protect the iPod (metal is good), and hopefully still let me use the Dock that I got with the thing last year. If I lose the Universal Dock access because of the case, I won't really care that much. I've done some looking, but would really like some first hand opinions from you guys.
I got this leather case and I'm quite happy with it. You can plug it in through the USB cord while still contained, the entire front except for the screen and scroll wheel is covered at all times, and theres also a protective cover that you can use for when its in your pocket or w/e. I wanted to get invisible shields, but at $50 it seemed a little bit stupid, and I'm just as happy with this.
although, I have the Bose Sounddock, and I have to take it out of the case to use it with it, as I'd imagine you would with the apple dock. But if you dont use one of those, its a great option as it's cheap and covers absolutely any damage you've done to it (other than screen or scroll wheel, which seem to be harder to scratch)
Two ways to pimp your iPod: They make a mild abrasive specifically for your iPod, do a google search for "AppleSauce" and you'll likely find it. That's for the plastic front.
If the back is scratched, what I did (before it got scratched even, right after I bought it) was scuff it up with a brillo pad. Use even, vertical strokes up and down the back and sides (and use tape to protect other parts) and you'll get a badass-looking 'brushed metal' look like you might find on expensive appliances, and it'll be impervious to fingerprints. Plus the text and apple logo on the back are still visible. Looks classy, IMO.
Stay away from leather cases, they don't absorb an impact if you drop it. Look for any of the soft plastic/silicone cases—the ones that feel like high-end dildos.
Just wanted to add in http://contourcase.com/ For the first time since I got my iPod in August, I dropped the thing a good 3 feet while it was playing. At once, I thought that justified my purchase for the Showcase, as it didn't even skip a beat, get a scratch, nothing.

My wife has one of these too, and it's great. Absolutely perfect.

However, the Xtreme Mac case has been very good to me over the past year or so since I got my iPod
