Simple Strategy Game Reccomendation

This is pretty brief, but I'd love to throw in a game in addition to the other presents for my dad on father's day.

He plays Risk II for the PC constantly, but he also tries to check his email by drawing a computer in MS Paint. (Not really but I think you get the point. Not very tech savy.)

I'm looking for something where simplicity is the key. Starcraft 2 is not a good idea.

I mean for starters are there any better PC incarnations of Risk? I looked around but Risk II seems to be the classic favorite. The new one for XBLA is too cutesy to go over well.

It obviously doesn't have to be new, available on Steam or whatnot is even better.

What else can I find in the same territory?

Galcon maybe? I don't know if it's really worth $10 (got the iphone version for only $1), but it's very similar to risk.

It's significantly more complicated, but still pretty easy (on easy), and a much more rewarding game:
    Civ 4

I always throw this out there just because it's free to try, and the CnC games are fairly simple in terms of gameplay. Old school total annihilation is pretty simple. There's also probably a number of indie strategy games out there... I'm not familiar with the indie game scene though.

    I agree with Civ 4.

A Total War game wouldnt be a bad idea either.

DEFCON or Plants vs Zombies. Practically everything else suggested is too complex or too frantic, I'd wager.

edit: also apparently DEFCON is broken on Steam right now or something?

    Maybe Uplink.

Yeah, but that's mostly because the board game itself sucked. :P

I wish there were computer adaptations for the Memoir 44 games.

I considered Civ. Hrm, never got into it but I thought it was fairly challenging. Remember he only really understands this because he was a fanatic of the board game.

Space type settings would probably be less appropriate than anything that would say have Napoleon on the cover.

Remember the old SWAT games? Is there anything like that around but much easier to work?

I have to vote for Silent Storm. Everything is controlled by clicking on things, and every situation basically boils down to "How can I destroy this whole building full of Nazis in mech suits created from alien technology?". The difficulty sliders can make it as simple or strategic as you like.

Something as simple as Plants vs. Zombies, but not a silly TD game would be perfect.

Has the strategy game gone the way of the Dodo lately?

    Nothing indie available?

DEFCON would be worth a try. It's only 15 dollars (Buy from the developers not Steam just in case) and it is fairly simplistic. All left clicks and right clicks. You can slow down the speed of the game if you're getting overwhelmed and it has a global map just like risk.

If he has an iPod Touch or iPhone there are a plenty of Risk clones that add their own little features in.

What kind of stuff is your dad interested in? If he likes medieval stuff- you should try him out Stronghold. It's not really difficult and operates in a fairly logical fashion. This is kind of a difficult request. All of the common features of strategy games are not found in Risk in any way. No strategy gamer has a problem with the concept of resource gathering, but someone from the outside might not even really understand the idea of it. We've just been dealing with it for the last 18 years or so.

Civ is a good suggestion. Yes, it is complex, but on the lowest setting you can make a myriad of mistakes and come out fine. The board game aspect of the game may be a decent bridge between Risk II and other PC strategy games.

How about King's Bounty? Move around the world map in real time but the battles are turn and grid based. It's simple to play but can require a lot of strategy if you crank the difficulty up.

As for real time strategy..a good starting point would be something like Settlers since they are fairly basic in play and really teach newcomers the principles of resource chains, assigning workers, resource managment etc. in a generally non-frantic setting.

You could also try something that doesn't revolve around building up armies and fighting off opposing ones, a more 'straight' building/planning/management game like Tropico, Sim City or Evil Genius.

I might just gamble on Civ 4. It might not stick due to the complexity but its probably the most similar from what I've seen. On low settings it should run on a new netbook as well right?

Probably, it runs....enough for it being a turn based game on my 6 year old laptop, which is actually slower than most netbooks

How about some Chess software? I get a lot of enjoyment out of Fritz when ever I get in the mood for some chess.

GOG.com has some good chess software too, and it'll be a decent bit cheaper than the latest version of Fritz. Older versions of Fritz are good too, much cheaper and are functionally no different than the latest version minus a feature or two that won't make any difference to anyone except a serious chess student.

Dude, 3 people have suggested DEFCON, which is simple in gameplay and presentation, runs on netbooks perfectly, and rocks! Civ IV is like, the most complex you can get without delving into games nobody has ever heard of.

If not, I recommend Sacrifice, or Battlezone 2: Combat Commander. Those are PC. They are all RTS games, with action thrown in because you actually control a unit on the ground.

Thinking about this. Maybe Sudden Strike would be up his alley. Very heavy on strategy and requires full employment of the thinking muscles, but it's slow paced and overall pretty amazing.

Although Civ has already been mentioned and you think XBLA Risk will be too cutesy, how about Civ Revolutions for xbox? It seemed far more streamlined than civ 4 with the core elements being baked into a well flowing, not too long, game.

    I'll second this.

The King's Bounty series is basically a carbon copy of Heroes of Might and Magic III, but with only one hero. You move your sole hero around the game world, collecting money, spells and equipment to make your hero a better commander. You then recruit troops and get into turn-based combat with up to six units on each side. Units move based on initiative and each full combat round your hero can cast a spell, most of which are genre tropes. After combat, your hero earns experience and gains the capacity to recruit ever-stronger units, and learn various passive bonuses from a skill tree.

The difficulty settings are nicely varied and despite being an RPG it's not particularly difficult for a non-gamer to get into. Your army is limited to six, equipment and attributes are mechanically simple, and with only one character to customise there's not a lot of opportunity to drown in statistics and min-maxing. My one major complaint is that the storyline sucks, horribly, and it's presented as huge walls of flavourless text. I only played Armoured Princess, but I heard The Legend is better in this regard.

Story aside, it's colourful, fun and certainly something different. A nice mix of simple strategy and the better mechanics of RPGs.

This. Basic control of an army is very simple, but still allows good strategic use of what you have available. It's free, and it will run on virtually anything. Even if you end up going with something else, download this for him too. It's a fantastic game.
