Basically, what these men do is endure a diet, consisting of bark and poison, that more or less saps the moisture from their body for years and years only to be rewarded with a body that is more or less is already mummified.

It was this thing stalking me in a city, only ever catching glimpses of it for less than a second and what was terrifying was that it walked like a bad stop-motion doll. Then just before I woke up it caught me, leaned in close and whispered "this is fear" in a sing song voice
