Can playing scratched xbox game damage xbox?

Got a used game today (Call of Duty 4) for the xbox 360. The game is in VERY bad condition. A lot of scratches that looked to be repairable, but there is one that looks bad. It is the ring around the cd scratch, like someone moved the xbox while it was being played. I used the banana method a few times, but results were not that great.

So I took some toothpaste and did the toothpaste trick a few times as well and it did take out a lot of the minor scratches, but that ring scratch is still there.

I am unable to install the game because it stops at 35%. I only tried multiplayer, but all maps load which I only care about.

What I'm asking is if it is safe for me to play that disc with the scratch? I really dont want to ruin my 360 laser. Will it screw up my 360 playing the disk with the ring scratch?

Thanks guys.

I don't see how it could ruin the laser.

You did clean off the banana and toothpaste before putting the game back in the xbox, right?

    haha, yeah.

No, I was just wondering if I was putting more strain on the laser with the scratched dvd.

Nah, there's no actual physical contact other than the drive head, so you can't hurt anything in the system by playing bad media.
