I love Catch-22, and this is a great poster to capture the feel of the book
Alternatively: I could have just censored all of it and the signature at the bottom would have given it away to most people.
If it looked more like this:
I would have known straight away.
(This means that my knowledge of classic literature, and/or my knowledge of coral is poor.)
Great design though.
I guess I just went with the first thing I figured in terms of coral being those pieces that you find dried washed up on the beach but I might have been better off using something with some more tines to it to distinguish it a little further. Some of the large fan corals and such would be too large but obviously a small bit of it would work.
What I have above is coral, but, it is also apparently a potential pork rocket.
It might not hurt to err on the side of "it is clearly a coral" even if it's not a realistic portrayal.
Can you do one for Ender's Game?
and here I was thinking about millions of polyps and collectivism when I should have just gone back and read the book
I am in LOVE with the Catch 22 thing.
I definitely enjoy the simplicity, it makes the ideas feel somewhat more solid, a lot of my older work would have a strong idea but then I would go smother it with images.
I love this simplistic style. I have to ask though, out of curiosity, are you at all inspired by Saul Bass?
That's the guy who did the posters and title sequences for a number of Hitchcock films like Vertigo, North by Northwest and Psycho for those who never heard of him.
-Alan Moore
I don't think my style is reminiscent of Bass and I haven't used anything of his for inspiration specifically but anyone doing minimalism really can't escape influence from Bass or Rand or Glaser.
Although I have to admit, even though 1984 is my favourite book ever, it took me a moment to get what you were referring to with that cover.
I think at least in regards to the 1984 picture I'm going to go with Grenn's advice and coral it up a notch.
It will still be a somewhat obscure reference in the book though but hopefully a little more recognizable.
How's the Bioshock poster coming? Update your thread if you have one, I was liking where you were going with it.
obviously for the new movie and follow up of the two previous ones I did.
Hmm I still don't like it...
*throw in textures*
Well at least it has texture now
*Save
Ditto on the textures though, it's especially obvious in the shark week piece.
I am glad to get the feedback though, when I'm not fully satisfied with something it definitely starts getting texture heavy.
Just something for practice, I wanted to do something with a new typeface I downloaded.
I think I need to do something different with the "rays" of light. The more I look at them the less they appeal to me.
Really love some of these, I think your work is getting stronger and starting to get some of its own character.
I agree with both critiques as well. I think I rushed out The following a bit (since it was the last one) and for the light bulb I need to know when to stop throwing things into a poster.
On a separate note though I think I will post something in progress, I don't do it nearly as often as I should so most things are fixed (or not) well after they've been finished.
Basically it's going to be a short series of prints of the international year of forests and chemistry which is designated by the UN
So before I start lumping trees in slapping it full of textures and calling it a day I think I'll post the work so far. Any critiques or comments would be most welcome.
I kind of think the water drop itself can be smaller as well.
I think I will need to change the text though, at large sizes I like it but shrunk down the effect worsens.
