Not really a thing, just being bored and anxious.

I love Catch-22, and this is a great poster to capture the feel of the book

    Thanks!

Alternatively: I could have just censored all of it and the signature at the bottom would have given it away to most people.

What does coral have to do with 1984? Is there a big swathe of the book I don't remember that involves coral?

He picked up a paperweight with a piece of coral in it at the antiques store. It was one of the symbolic items for the love story part of it. In that it was a fragile remnant of the prior world, illegal, and when they got raided in the room it got destroyed.

I would have struggled to see it as a piece of coral, until you pointed it out.

If it looked more like this:
    red%20coral%201%20400x300.jpg

I would have known straight away.

(This means that my knowledge of classic literature, and/or my knowledge of coral is poor.)

    Great design though.

    Thanks grenn.

I guess I just went with the first thing I figured in terms of coral being those pieces that you find dried washed up on the beach but I might have been better off using something with some more tines to it to distinguish it a little further. Some of the large fan corals and such would be too large but obviously a small bit of it would work.

With design, sometimes it's more appropriate to use visual language which communicates more clearly, rather than more realistically, making stylistic choices for the benefit of the audience.

    Yeah that's a good point.

What I have above is coral, but, it is also apparently a potential pork rocket.

It might not hurt to err on the side of "it is clearly a coral" even if it's not a realistic portrayal.

I love your movie poster redesigns. Mostly Inception (you know why).

Can you do one for Ender's Game?

Possibly, I haven't read Ender's Game though so I'm not entirely sure of my ability to reduce it down like with Catch-22 or 1984 so if I were to do it I would need to cheat a bit.

and here I was thinking about millions of polyps and collectivism when I should have just gone back and read the book

I really dig the simple designs, makes the ideas behind them pop out.

I am in LOVE with the Catch 22 thing.

    Thanks Broke.

I definitely enjoy the simplicity, it makes the ideas feel somewhat more solid, a lot of my older work would have a strong idea but then I would go smother it with images.

I love this simplistic style. I have to ask though, out of curiosity, are you at all inspired by Saul Bass?
That's the guy who did the posters and title sequences for a number of Hitchcock films like Vertigo, North by Northwest and Psycho for those who never heard of him.

Life isn’t divided into genres. It’s a horrifying, romantic, tragic, comical, science-fiction cowboy detective novel … with a bit of pornography if you're lucky.

    Perhaps Indirectly.

I don't think my style is reminiscent of Bass and I haven't used anything of his for inspiration specifically but anyone doing minimalism really can't escape influence from Bass or Rand or Glaser.

This is the type of design I love.

Although I have to admit, even though 1984 is my favourite book ever, it took me a moment to get what you were referring to with that cover.

    Thanks Flay,

I think at least in regards to the 1984 picture I'm going to go with Grenn's advice and coral it up a notch.

It will still be a somewhat obscure reference in the book though but hopefully a little more recognizable.

How's the Bioshock poster coming? Update your thread if you have one, I was liking where you were going with it.

Great designs, but they're a bit heavy handed on the textures. They'd be a lot nicer and less jarring if you pulled it back a little bit.

  • ChromatomicChromatomic Mr. DCRegistered User regular
That's a pretty fair criticism, I'm kind of getting over a long ass slump so the process kind of goes like this:

Hmm I still don't like it...
    *throw in textures*
Well at least it has texture now
    *Save

Oh man, so much love for the catch-22 cover.

Ditto on the textures though, it's especially obvious in the shark week piece.

    sain on
  • ChromatomicChromatomic Mr. DCRegistered User regular
Yeah the Shark week and the 2 skulls ones were kind of like art indigestion. I'm not particularly thrilled by them and I likely won't go back to change them. I just need to get them out of my system and move on I guess.

I am glad to get the feedback though, when I'm not fully satisfied with something it definitely starts getting texture heavy.

Final Movie for my Nolan ones. And (unfortunately) this is the only movie I have yet to see which I suppose is why I did it last.

Just something for practice, I wanted to do something with a new typeface I downloaded.

I think I need to do something different with the "rays" of light. The more I look at them the less they appeal to me.

Im not a huge fan of how big that text is on the last one, the light bulb seems like it needs to breathe a little. The following poster, I feel like you need a clearer silhouette for the walking dude, He kinda looks like hes doing a jig. Best to choose clear poses if you are going to black out a figure, it'll give you alot more movement.

Really love some of these, I think your work is getting stronger and starting to get some of its own character.

  • ChromatomicChromatomic Mr. DCRegistered User regular
    edited September 2011
Ah thanks Iruka (seriously) I always feel like some of my work goes in such random directions so I'm glad (at least to others) there's some semblance of character beginning to develop.

I agree with both critiques as well. I think I rushed out The following a bit (since it was the last one) and for the light bulb I need to know when to stop throwing things into a poster.

On a separate note though I think I will post something in progress, I don't do it nearly as often as I should so most things are fixed (or not) well after they've been finished.

Basically it's going to be a short series of prints of the international year of forests and chemistry which is designated by the UN

So before I start lumping trees in slapping it full of textures and calling it a day I think I'll post the work so far. Any critiques or comments would be most welcome.

Man other than the font I kinda like it as is... not really much "forest" without the trees though. I would use the simpler trees, at least. There's a lot of really nice flowing lines happening inside the drop, contrasting with the mountains, personally I would try not to take away from that.

Don't really like the "glare," I think the shape and text kind of get the point across.

I kind of think the water drop itself can be smaller as well.

Ah thanks, I was kind of thinking about removing it already but was still a bit unsure. With everything being somewhat more flat it doesn't really need to have lighting effects to define it shape.

An update for the forests one

    6153358734_7e67fe7d30_z.jpg

I think I will need to change the text though, at large sizes I like it but shrunk down the effect worsens.

    Chromatomic on
  • IrukaIruka Registered User, Moderator Mod Emeritus
At this side it is kinda hard to read, for sure. It also looks like the R in year ans Y in Chemistry re cut off? Or its a weird visual effect from the text and background color being similar.

  • ChromatomicChromatomic Mr. DCRegistered User regular
Yeah it has a grid effect on the letters which I liked for the sciency graph paper feel but it's not really working. It might work on a different typeface or I can bin it and leave the letters alone with just the drop shadow.

  • SiegfriedSiegfried Registered User regular
I think the type definitely looked better on the brown background, although I agree that the graph paper effect could probably be scrapped.
