[Game On!] Dystopia, Source Engine mod - 1.3! It's Real! Seriously, I Swear! Try It!
MongerI got the ham stink.Dallas, TXRegistered Userregular
All your deckers have been goomba'd and/or phisted. Ninjas are all up in your core. Yes, that is a horde of spider mines following you.
What's all this, then?
Dystopia is a cyberpunk mod for the Source Engine. It's awesome. More awesome than Tuftoo. Why? It has hitbeeps. You shoot and then when you hit things, they beep. Like, BEEEEEP when you do a little damage and BOOOOOOP when you hurt something real bad. But you don't want it to get all BBBBRRRRRPPPPTTTT because that's the sadbeep and it means you shot a friend.
It's so sad. Don't shoot your friends.
Also, it's one of the deepest class-based, objective-oriented multiplayer shooters you are likely to play. Maybe you play a superhacker, jacking in to cyberspace, turning turrets against your enemies, opening doors for your allies, and capturing entire rooms from the other side of the map. Maybe you play a shotgun ninja, running around invisible and suicide bombing an entire team when you get found. Maybe you play a giant hulking tank that commands a small army of exploding spiders, vaporizes enemies with a massive laser, and punches squishy deckers in the face. Maybe you have a sword fight on top of a skyscraper. Maybe you kill a dude by jumping on his head. Then laugh. Then get your neck bolted to a wall because you were laughing and not paying attention. And then one of your enemies launches a missile that presumably destroys a small island nation. Probably a peaceful one. Dystopia is all this and more.
Dystopia 1.3 is out!

First of all, Dystopia runs off the Source SDK Base. You'll need any Valve game that gives you access to it. There's an eerily expedient buying guide right here. If you don't own any of those and aren't interested in Valve games, you can get Dystopia-ready for as little as $5 with a copy of HL2: Deathmatch. Also, I will punch you. Those are some great games and you should play them.
Secondly, you'll need the mod. Look, it's even on Steam! How convenient!
So I have Dystopia installed and what is going on I don't even
Okay. Calm down. Dystopia can be a little overwhelming. But don't fret! The Dystopia team have put together a handy dandy new player guide for your convenience. That's more than you need to know, really. Let me break it down for you. All you need to know to get in on all this awesome in 4 easy to remember tenets.
Basically, this is a balanced build that will allow you to focus on learning the objectives and map flow, without having to actively use abilities to benefit your team. The assault rifle is the most well rounded weapon in the game. There's no situation where it isn't effective, and it doesn't force a playstyle on you. Everyone eventually gravitates towards a certain weapon, but this won't come until you've spent some time with the game. And again, the focus here is to learn the core of the game before you have to worry about these kinds of specifics. Also to that end, we have the mediplant, which works passively. It will automatically heal your team and earn you points without having to do anything beyond staying close to allies, which you should be doing anyway.
The SCS gives you more energy, which will allow you to heal more teammates and generally be an all around cooler dude. The IFF will show you health bars, which will allow you to pick off wounded enemies and make better, more informed decisions about combat. Thermals will make stealthiers light up, prime for being capped in the face. Many people prefer to use the Sound Wave Triangulator (SWT) over thermals, but the SWT takes more getting used to. The only limitation on the thermals is that when they're turned on, you'll only be able to tell teams apart based on silhouette and whatever you can remember about who was where before you switched vision modes. I say this is the only limitation because seriously mangs, no one takes the cold suit.
2. Follow your goddamn team.
In Dystopia, spawning happens in waves. You will pretty much always be spawning with other team members, and chances are that at least one of them knows what you should be doing at any given time. Drop towards the back of the pack and follow them around. There's never a time when you shouldn't be traveling as a pack. The level design is also heavily centered around choke points. If you're on offense, you aren't going to accomplish anything walking by yourself into a room with an entire enemy team in it. If you're on defense, the other team will steamroll over to their next objective if you aren't blocking them off in mass.
No team around? 1.3 has handy objective trails. They're handy and will probably lead you to everyone else.
3. Protect your fucking decker.
Your decker is helpless when he's jacked in, and many objectives need to be completed within cyberspace for your team to progress through the map. Someone needs to be watching that guy at every moment. There will be ninjas slipping into your JIP at all times, and they will murder squishy, helpless deckers. And your team will lose. Fast.
4. Stay the hell away from cyberspace.
The Dystopia community, as a general rule, is very helpful and welcoming of new players. You will still get bitched the fuck out if you drop into cyberspace without knowing what you're doing. Give it some time. Don't rush it. You'll get there. Shooting mans is fun, too.
Before you're ready to tackle decking, you need to know a couple things. First is the layout of the map you're on and the objective progression start to finish. You need to know this like the back of your hand to have any idea of what nodes to look for in cyberspace. You'll learn this as you play each map in meatspace, and it'll take some time. Basically, you want to be comfortable with the rest of the game before you start adding new layers on top of it.
Second, you'll need to learn how to move around in cyberspace. The layout in cyberspace is different for each map, and that's best learned by hosting a private match and noodling around in it on your own. Combat there is way different as well. When the time comes that you're ready to take a stab at decking, ask other people about it. It's best explained once you have a feel for what you're getting yourself into, and they can give you tips at whatever rate you're comfortable learning at. You can also watch other deckers on the JIP's screen while you're guarding them. Really, though, the best way to learn here is by experience. Get in there. Practice. Wrap your head around wonky gravity. Get cyberfragged. A lot. Then hopefully not as much. Find that secret hentai room. What?
Awright! Let's do this thang!
Join up with the Pixelantes, the Steam group for Dystopia. Jump in the chat. Then start bugging people to play or something. Always be bugging.
Oh man, I'm totally in your base, hacking your security system. Love this game. Used to be pretty good at decking, but Light with BoltGun was always my favorite.
First things first, bind a suicide button so that when you get nicked by an assault rifle, you don't back up and whip out your whole team. I dunno if that counts for points but it will make the day of the guy who shot you.
I know it did for me.
Oh, and cyber kills and emp kills are the most embarrassing kills possible, succeeded by environment kills. So spam those emp grenades (AT THE OTHER TEAM) and open those trap doors (UNDER THE OTHER TEAM).
What's that one map? With the silo that the attackers are trying to activate?
The first objective has these big air vents above the room, and you always see a few lights and mediums falling down from there. What you rarely see is a whole group of heavies falling down, bassilisks and miniguns blazing. Man, that's a fun map.

I'm not that familiar with the map names, but I believe that one is simply called Silo.
Did they release the new version to the public yet? Been sort of sticking to tf2 lately(mostly because I've finally started getting all the reflexes I developed over 3 or so years of Dystopia worked out...). In any case, Dystopia is imho by far the best, most polished hl2 mod out there, and easily the most suited for comp play. Its a shame that hl2 mods tend to get way way less love than their HL predessors, even with the thing where Valve is integrating some of the more polished ones into Steam.
And yeah, the map MegaMek is thinking of is simply named Silo. Sort of a love/hate relationship with that map because a couple of decent Tesla rifle users can shut down an entire offense on it pretty easy.
My favorite map, I dunno if it was before or after 1.0, was the one where the hackers were attacking from another building and had to jump over. It was especially fun due to the sniping with thermal in the dark, team kills were so nice when you didn't expect them. Actually, it was before 1.0 because the heavies and mediums looked a lot alike.
Sound trackers was particularly useful when you were defending the last stretch on the top floor and had to figure out where they were coming from.
Like I said over in the Steam thread, I love being a heavy with a SWT and a minigun on defense. I'll just sit somewhere and watch the enemy coming up to a door or around a corner and have my gun spinning already by the time they actually come into my view. *bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbboop*
Actually, I just love the SWT, period. I almost never leave home without it, it's so useful against cloakers since almost nobody takes the mod that makes you silent.

Excellent OP. I absolutely adore Dys, cango and I used to play it on a fairly regular basis before I went abroad for 9 months. I am absolutely down for hopping on this evening, and either getting some games in or maybe walking some people around the maps and such.

That's Vaccine, which was the only map for the original public release. I once ninja'd it solo as a punk in 2:30. It was pretty awesome. I was pretty awesome.

In general just don't take the Cortex Bomb when you are new. EMP grenades are awesome and stealthing into the JIP to EMP their deckers is always useful. Or stealth katana them.
I just played a little bit. I punched off the head of an enemy. It was great.
Earlier before I went to work I was trying to take down another heavy with my minigun (he had the ion canon thing) and we were dancing around some crate thing (I was barely able to spray him in the eyes with the minigun and he couldn't touch me) when he stopped for a second and then ran around and punched my fucking face off. Boy was I surprised.
I've never gotten the hang of those damn Silo vents. Not the ones above the first objective with the massive turbines, but rather the tiny ones that appear to run through the rest of the level. Are you supposed to be able to get into them with the Leg Boosters? I've sometimes seen people in them while dead and it looks so very, very useful. Or extremely gimmicky but fun
The finest weapon in any game ever. It just feels so right, combined with the ping noise when you score a hit it just does it for me. Does it all over. Long range, short range, every kind of range.

IIRC, (and if they haven't changed) yeah you get into them via leg boosters. Either in the vent above the 2nd obj or in the room right before the silo platform room. Both can be activated in cyberspace in the room opposite the capture obj button.
When the gaming rig died, it was Dystopia that I missed the most. It hurts a little every time I get a super secret supporter email. I got maybe one day of playtesting some cool new stuff before my computer died. ;_;
Gibbs on

My will be done.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
Saw your post in the steam thread and the league of legends server just went down. I need my multiplayer gaming fix!

Downloading.
Edit: There are 3 entries for Source SDK in my tools page, SDK, Base 2006, Base 2007. Which one do I need?
Don't think about that. Steam will download anything you need when you first launch Dystopia.
Is there a specific server we should be playing on?
oh god I am not good at battlefield

What can I expect in the way of improvements, coming back years later?
Steam ID: Obos Vent: Obos
Now I'm redownloading it despite the fact I have way too many games to beat including the latter two seasons of sam & max.
Damn you.

Don't argue with it.
This is happening.

I also really hate the friendly fire in this game..
oh god I am not good at battlefield
edit: Hmmm... Apparently I'm unable to connect to any servers. Getting an error about my version of the game not matching the server's. Working on it.

Makes it easier to find cool dudes who are on.
Protip, fodder and I are mad pro.
We used to join matches of vaccine, and skip the entire first objective. Or capture the first and have the second capped in less than 30 seconds.
Because were pro
Also, I seem to be unable to join games from the ingame browser, but I can from the Steam browser out of the game. Weird.

I loved sneaking around in vaccine. And silo. And sometimes fortress. v55

I made a game, it has penguins in it. It's pay what you like on Gumroad.
Currently Ebaying Nothing at all but I might do in the future.
And it's certainly no ion cannon.
