First, a bit of backstory:
When I was a little kid, I was an avid watcher of cartoons of any kind.
Unfortunately for my young self, there weren't really any decent cartoon-only stations in Germany, so I was left with a boring weekend.. BUT THEN

THEN

Then I discovered Cartoon Network. My young self really really didn't care at all about the fact that I didn't understand most of it, which proved to be somewhat good..
Because over the time, I started to understand, most of it, even understanding little language jokes and stuff like that.
I think that really helped me learning English (together with school obviously)

SO, I didn't just learn English in school, but also French, which for some reason didn't click as well...


Which is the reason why I am now looking for good French movies and series I can watch with subtitles (German or English), for fun and learning!
Recommendations?

    Amelie is the best. So is Le Samourai.

    If you like Le Samourai, you could also check out Ronin. It's not French, but very similar.

    Do you have a library near by? Most of them have great foreign film sections. If it's Criterion, it'll probably be good.

    As far as I understand it, he's living in Germany (?), Criterion Stuff is US only (btw, envy is set to MAX).

    Try the Arthaus label, fantastic selection, and, of course, lots and lots of french movies

    I wonder how different Creole and French are. Can someone speaking one language understand the other? My housemates are Haitian, so I hear that language all the time.

    I took a look at it in Wikipedia and I don't think it's easily intelligible. The grammar is in some aspects very different from French.

    Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis is a very funny movie, by the way. But I don't know whether it is what you're looking for, since in the French original, most of the characters speak in a dialect which is hard to understand even for native speakers.
