Never enough miles, never enough black smoke... Beater cars

I love cars. I have a long history of car ownership across many sports and luxury cars in my 11 years of driving. For a long time I had a corvette convertible sitting in my garage as a wkend toy. But I soon realized, thats all it did. It sat.

You see, I live in a shit town, with shit roads, filled with shit drivers/traffic, too many cops and it seems like no one has insurance anymore. I was tired of worrying, and caring, and spending, and not enjoying it. So i sold my vette and my lexus and I bought a beater.

For $1700 I bought a crappy looking ford escort that gets 30 mpg and just keeps running. It looks hideous. I'm pretty sure someone died in the back seat. I didnt even have a proper title for a long while (bonded!). And for $1700 I own these roads. I dont care who hits/dents/scratches/tailgates me. I squeeze into bike lanes to pass. and don't mind a little offroading if need be. You see driving in Tucson sucks. My beater made it fun again, because now i just don't care. Tailgating? EXPECT A BRAKE CHECK. Someone parks next to me too tight to let me in my car? My door is swinging open... Hard.

I can generally repair the car on my own with parts fashioned from Home Depot. I never wash it. And liability insurance is $20 a month. If it gets stolen or dies on the road, I don't care. As long as I get a good year out of it, my money is well spent. I can donate it and write it off. And beaters change hands in a matter of hours on craigslist.

So this thread is not about driving like an ass. It's about the almighty beater. The car that costs nothing to run and just keeps running. I'm thinking of expanding my collection, perhaps a miata. I'll plant a big turbo and suspension, or maybe a bronco. What beater do/did you own/experience? And what have you done to make it the ultimate urban assault vehicle?

I've seriously considered a bumper guard. =D

Et tu, Brute?
