...To Cancun [and beyond!]

edited July 2010 in Help / Advice Forum
To be brief, a girl is involved and I have no money....and Cancun is far, far away. I'm trying to sell a few things to raise money, but have been unsuccessful.

If I drove to Cancun, it would be about a 5 day drive: 3 days of that would be spent with some of the craziest drivers in the world.

This morning, I found a 4hr, non-stop flight from Phoenix (where my parents reside) for $600. I was excited that the one way flight only cost $300...anyway...

I've also found a few 7-day packages that include the flight and hotel for around $800.

That's pretty much the extent of my research. Can you think of any other way to realistically make a trip down to Cancun without spending too much money?

Am I crazy?

Whoa whoa whoa, wait a minute.

Why exactly are you trying to get to Cancun? "A girl is involved" can mean a lot of different things.

Driving there in an American car has all of the difficulties associated with a long road trip as well as all of the difficulties associated with bringing an American car into Mexico.

Do you have a valid Passport?

This could be an incredibly adventurous and romantic endeavor, or it could be an incredibly stupid and ill-planned disaster. We won't really know until you provide some more details.

i'd really REALLY not recommend driving through Mexico right now.

all i'll say is, i work with an Federal agency dealing daily with transborder issues. this is NOT a good time.

if you have to go to Cancun, fly or take a cruise.

    DO NOT DRIVE.

Maybe I just need somebody who knows how to find excellent vacation packages, because Expedia doesn't seem to have the "best bang for your buck" option I was looking for.

Where are you? And when do you want to go?

There are now economic airlines in México that has made travelling by plane affordable now.

If by any chance you are in California, or near it, Volaris has flights from LAX or San Jose California to Cancún.

http://www.volaris.com.mx/Inicio.aspx?culture=en-US (I choose the english layout option so you can start browsing it).

If you are close to a Border Town, search it in the site and see if it might be cheaper to just cross the border and take a flight from here.

Keep in mind that they don't have flights every day, all the time, for example, from Hermosillo (Which is relatively close to Phoenix around 4 hours by car), you can find flights to Cancun on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays only. Also, flights are cheaper if you buy them with several weeks in advance, instead of buying them in short notice.

Good luck! (Although that round flight for 600 USD sounds pretty nice).

Edit.- Also, I wouldn't recommend driving through México right now, insecurity and crime rates aside, roads and highways in México are COMPLETELY different (And by different I mean HORRIBLE, really bad infrastructure, and EXPENSIVE TOLLS) compared to roads, highways and freeways in the USA. MAYBE if you were only going to travel across the border for whatever reason, but crossing and driving through all México, no man, not a good idea.

Okay, so, driving is out. It was just an idea, anyway. I'm brainstorming here.

I met this girl online who had taught English in other countries. I was looking for some advice, so we started talking. That was a few months ago and since then we've acquired a mutual attraction for each other. I've spoken to her via Skype a few times and am not completely oblivious to what might be in store for me.

But, yes, it is an adventure...most likely, a steamy romantic adventure, if I understand her intentions correctly. I just hope she doesn't have a penis.

...and, yes, I have a shiny, new Passport.

Thank you, but keep in mind that the $600 round trip did NOT include a hotel; which is something else I need to consider.

I plan to leave in August (after the 2nd), preferably on a Monday, and stay for 7-days. It's possible that I could fly out of San Diego, but I was really aiming for the shorter Phoenix flight, simply because I hate flying.

I will definitely look at those other airlines. Thanks.

If you manage to make it into the country, and you don't die, you'll be missing a kidney....

Seriously though, I've ran out of fingers and toes to count the number of ways this is a bad idea....

If you're so 'dead-set' on this, why do you have to go down there? Why can she not come up here? Why not meet on neutral ground?

...and I just got the damn thing [kidney] fixed.

She'll be driving 3hrs to Cancun to stay with me. She's currently staying with her parents who retired and have a condo in Mexico.

    She isn't, um, Mexican.

When I went to Cancun a couple years ago, we landed there, stayed the night in a hotel, and then headed down the coast.

Cancun is really only fun if your only goal in life is a glorified frat party.

Head down the coast of the peninsula and see some of the ruins that are a bit inland. A bus ride is fairly inexpensive, and if you don't stay in tourist hotspots, you can get REALLY good deals on decent hotel rooms. A town like Puerto Morelos is only about an hour south of Cancun and has all the white sands beaches and seaside restaurants you need (about four), but not all the tourists or tourist pricing. I believe the hotel room I stayed in there was $40/night which included A/C and a private bathroom.

$600? What? Are you flying on a private cessna?

Maybe it's just from Texas, because airfare to Cancun is usually dirt cheap.

Anyway, there are tons of inexpensive hostels in and around cancun, why would you need a hotel package if you're broke? Anywhere inexpensive isn't going to advertise on expedia.

I spent around month in the Yucatan last year, so I can give you some more specific recommendations if you need them.

I went to Cancun last year with a vacation package. I forget what airfare was but I want to say around $350 from Michigan. We stayed at a large all-inclusive beach resort outside of the city area for about $250 a night. Free (nice) food and booze, room with a balcony and a jaccuzi, beachside and swim-up pool bars. All of the resorts around there are pretty nice, you can't really go wrong. I realize this might not be what you are looking for, but I figured it would be good to give you a ballpark money wise. $600 does seem a little steep just for airfare.

Where are you located? I'm just looking on Kayak and you can fly from San Antonio for like $275.

I want to fly out of Phoenix. I've found 4-5 day, all-inclusive packages for around $700-800. The only problem is that I want a 7 day package.

I heard if you wait until the last week or two before booking, hotels will reduce their prices. Is this true?

If you wait until a week, at a Tourist Resort such as Cancún, in the middle of Summer, you might not find a place to stay, at least on the Big Chain Hotels and Resorts. :?

How is the middle of summer a busy season in Cancun? It's fucking hot in the summer. I'd imagine the winter has more business.

OP: Check out some discount travel sites. Last minute bookings are always cheaper, but you're risking it.

It's summer vacation time for large amount of mexicans, but then again, there might not be a lot of busy season foreigner wise.

Peak season there is December through April. August through November is the rainy season, so that may actually be a good thing, price-wise. (Though, worth mentioning that "rainy season" and "hurricane season" are concurrent).

Riviera Maya (i think) is near Cancun and it's got some nice resorts. It may be cheaper since it's not in the Hotel Zone proper.

An all inclusive trip to cancun should be economical. while not cheap, per se, it will be way cheaper than any other all inclusive area. going European style (not inclusive) makes the initial cost cheaper, but i'd say food/drinks included is worth it.

Mexicans go to Cancun for their vacation? That's like people from Ontario going to Niagara Falls or Toronto.
