External monitor woes

A couple of months back I punched the shit out of my Dell Inspiron 1525's LCD display and basically wrecked it. The screen is completely white for the most part, with a very small portion in the top left which still displays more or less normally.

I recently picked a nice monitor up from a friend and plugged it into my laptop. It displayed 'Input not supported'. I managed to get my laptop booted up and when it reached the desktop, a box popped up. I was able to drag the box to the top left, configure the monitor, and after that it worked perfectly.

Earlier tonight the monitor cord got yanked out of its input thingie and the display shut down. Normally plugging it back in would bring it right back, but I got nothing but 'No signal' messages. I did Fn + F8 and it blinked and the monitor went back to saying 'Input not supported'. But there is no configuration box to be found! It doesn't appear when I reboot, when I plug the monitor in, nothing. And because 90% of the screen is busted I have no way of manually accessing any menus or settings.

What do I do.

edit: I hit Fn + F8 a bunch more times and eventually it just happened to switch over and now it's working again yaaay.

If you are using Windows the display property panel should be able to recognize the second screen and there you can set the correct resolution.
