I for one hope that Nintendo is turning over a new leaf with the 3DS. I can't wait to play classics Like LOZ: OOT, Star Fox 64, Metal Gear, and FF. Hopefully Shigeru has realized that the quality of his consoles seems to be going with his age, and it's time for something new, with a taste of his old success in classic Zelda, Star Fox, etc.
The problem isn't the consoles. The problem, as usual, is with 3rd party support. That, and quality control from the 3rd parties that do bother putting anything on the consoles.
I'm looking forward to Pit's new adventures, and I'm happy for the fans of the other series', but I'm hoping that there's more innovation to come in franchises and not just NES 7.0.
Yup, Shiggy's new consoles sure do suck what with the Wii being the best selling console this generation and the DS being one of the best selling of all time.
The 3D seen in the 3DS might be new, but I wouldn't really consider the plan for 3D itself to be new. There was an Iwata Asks recently about the 3DS where it was said that Nintendo has been constantly working with 3D and have considered it as an option with virtually every piece of hardware they have released. This time around you can probably play games a lot longer though as you're not peering into a machine that only produces bright red visuals against a black background.
Also, if classics from Nintendo are what you are most looking forward to, you should realize that the Wii is the best place for this still (and probably will be for some time).
Having been a Nintendo fanboy since the NES all the way to the N64 I have to say that Nintendo is having a hard time keeping up with the times. The Wii is great for some people, but to me its mostly just a gimmick that adds very little to gameplay. I sold my Wii after I got bored with SSBB so maybe I missed something but the internet is atrocious, and I actually had to buy an adapter to get it to work on a wired router.
Very few FPS games, WRPGs, and any good online game. I just lost interest and also never saw a reason to buy a DS, which does have many good games but I guess I just prefer to use my computer/console at home and to read a book when I am away.

This seems to be something Iwata is trying to rectify. One of the recent Interviews with him mentions that nintendo were actively seeking out third parties for the 3DS. Seems like a good strategy compared to their non-action for the last while.
They're also talking of having some heavily revamped online systems as well. Seems like the 3DS is Nintendo's cue to start making some much needed changes.

So Avatar is the best movie ever made, then?

I don't even agree with the OP but the idea that sales numbers = quality is so fucking stupid that I can't help but cringe whenever someone uses it.

Nintendo has always had an excellent time with its portable hardware. Always.
The 3DS does show the first opportunity for Nintendo to create a system with graphics that can seriously compare to what has previously only been possible in a home console setting. In a way this creates the appearance of a new opportunity for third party companies to create higher-end releases for a Nintendo system. Better heads than I can explain why the N64, Gamecube, and Wii have not been approached with the same flair and finesse as the GBA or the DS, but everyone knows the 3DS is all but destined to continue Nintendo's outstanding pedigree of portable systems and games.

That analogy is absolutely horrible. You're comparing something that is judged on artistic value to something that is purely a platform to bring entertainment to the masses and has no such value. They are judged on completely different metrics. To use something other than sales is nothing more than an inflation of personal opinions.

Forward thinking but behind the times in some aspects would be a good way to put it I think. Their online model is waaay behind, but on the other hand, Sony and Microsoft are the ones who are playing catch up with motion controlled gaming. And for all the limitations of playing games online, playing multiplayer games with people on the same screen is a hell of a lot of fun with most games. I would say its the quintessential party console and for me, that experience is much preferable to playing deathmatch with people who more often than not carry on like douchnozzles online. Then again, the games you seem to really like aren't quite my fortay either. If I'm going to seek out those types of games I always have my PC right in front of me. Diablo III is guaranteed to get a lot of play time from me at least, that much is certain.
Movies and Games are both entertainment, to claim one as art and not the other is entirely a personal opinion.

The purpose of the thread seems to be another opinions-as-facts parade.
That said, the 3DS is looking nice, but I'm becoming old and all this new 3D stuff only angers and confuses me so I'll just be playing it for the games.

Honestly though the analogy has merit here in my opinion. There..don't want that bit getting confused. Avatar and the Wii have succeeded due to the same reason. The masses and a gimmick. The Wii appealed to a wider audience with its family friend play styles and games, leaning more towards party or group gaming setups and away from more mature themed gaming with a few exceptions. Yes its sales numbers are amazing but does that mean its truely as good of a gaming console as it should be? No, no it doesn't. Nintendo is getting by with piles of shitty games sprinkled with their own triple A titles because the masses gobble up every bowling or game night turd on a disc that comes down the pipe.
A similar arguement could be made for Avatar. At the end of the day it skated by a lot by virtue of the technology involved and the "ooh aah," factor. Again, thanks to the masses. Now I'm not saying that either is good or bad, simply that in my opinion that's how it is that they've both done so well. So yeah, you can compare the two on the grounds that they get by and did so well in part thanks to a gimmick and we don't have to get all douchey about it in the process.
I think the OP is hoping for continued first party quality from nintendo with hopefully some brand new ponies to add to their stable alongside zelda and mario and perhaps a bit stronger third party backing and triple A titles for the 3DS. I think we can all agree that would be fantastic.

maybe, but the Wii is more expensive, and I wouldn't want to buy a new console just for the downloadable content and a few odd games(Metroid Prime, Smash Bros, Super Mario Galaxy, a couple more). Besides, you never know if this might what Nintendo loving, but hardcore gamers, are looking for. They may finally get the online play down pact. But I'm definitely not getting my hopes up.
It never ceases to amaze me how some people think that Nintendo are somehow responsible for the quality of 3rd party software on their platforms. What? Should Nintendo be paying companies to make better games on their platforms or should they somehow oversee every project that is developed on their platforms? It's rediculous. I agree with the 2nd poster. The problem is that the vast majority of 3rd party developers have very little imagination and can only understand "more." That's the pervading ethos in the western game development world. Also, many developers have an overinflated sense of self-importance and rarely would lower themselves to developing software on a platform that's not seen to them as "cutting edge." Never mind that all the hardware is nearly 5 years old by this point. PCs don't come into the equation anymore due to the old piracy scapegoat but I think it's more to do with a combination of audience and developer ignorance.
I'm really excited about the 3DS. I think the fact that it's a console solves a lot of the problems I have with 3D, mainly in terms of cost, lack of glasses, and practicality. the depth slider sounds like a great idea too.
the only thing that's kind of disappointing is that there's no 3D on the bottom screen. I know it wouldn't have been practical because touching the screen would ruin the illusion amyway but it just means that games where the primary mode of input is the stylus (like the zelda games) won't be made.
I don't think it necessarily means that. The DS was always about giving options to developers/players. 3DS seems to continue that trend.
No, the DS was about making 円 for Nintendo. 3DS probably will continue that trend.
3rd party developers have no reason to develop for the Wii as far as I can tell. At least, why develop for Wii when Sony and MS are willing to provide money to subsidize development and you aren't forced to compete with Nintendo? Most "hardcore" gamers probably have a PS3/360 to go along with their Wii, those that don't, aren't interested in 3rd party games to begin with.

Well, it could be because most 3rd party developers are losing lots and lots of money in HD development (and in general), and the Wii provides a cheaper system to develop for.
But then they could just go to the DS.

With the 3DS, for me, it's probably gonna be just like the current generation... and the one before that... and the one before that.
I'll buy it a month or two after launch, buy a game or two, and then proceed to ignore it for three, four years, occasionally interrupting its long dusty slumber for a new Zelda, Metroid, Golden Sun or (a newcomer?!) Paper Mario. Every other game is most probably inferior to anything on the stationary consoles (although, yes, Golden Sun is actually not a very good game; I prefer to think of it as an accumulation of awesome dungeons, puzzles and charming details, wrapped in a layer of horrendous writing and abyssmal battles).
So, yeah. Same old, same old. Maybe I'll be able to afford some non-handicapped games from all the money I won't be spending past the fourth game.
I always find it weird when people say they can't find anything to play on their Wii. Are you just not paying attention? Are online first person shooters the only thing you play?
There are so many great games for the console, I can't imagine what is wrong with you people.

Save rare ocasions, these people don't want to find games to play on Wii. They prefer to cling to this pre conceived notion that it has very few games outside of 1st party offerings. Of course some might just be into online FPS only or something of the sort, like you said, so OK, what they want isn't there.
There's a difference between Nintendo "not being able to keep up" and your tastes simply not matching with what they offer, since they always had pretty much the same overall strategy and over the course of Wii's life they've been releasing plenty of good games.

Online FPS is a genre I don't play at all, and I can rarely find good things on the Wii
The only game I really incredibly enjoyed on the Wii thus far that wasn't on an HD system (which obviously makes the Wii version inferior) is Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon

Didn't like the first
Don't like 3D Marios
Didn't like it
Didn't like other versions of the game, assuming the Wii version is exactly the same
Didn't like it with the Wii controls, enjoyed it on GameCube though (played on my Wii, incidentally)
Liked Melee just fine, formula was tired by the time Brawl hit
No interest
Haven't played yet, this one may be valid Ugh
Have to play it with the shitty control method of a sideways Wiimote rather than the Classic Controller which would make so much more sense
EDIT: I realize that the Wii is simply not for me, and that's fine. But the notion that some people just can't find good games for it is absolutely realistic, not laughable. There are Nintendo die-hards who look at the entirety of the 360 library and go "meh", and that's fine too.

You know how the new trend with movies is to remake all these old movies from the '80s and '90s, only now sometimes in 3D?
It's like that, only with Nintendo games.
