Sounds like something a shitty player would say.
I thought this too but it appears that I was mistaken. We'll just have to wait for Valve's clarification on that one.
The shotgun gets 2 consecutive crits every kill, 1 crit for an assist. You get those as they happen, but when the gun dies, based on how many kill it got, you get bonus crits.
this is EXACTLY how I read it originally
but others in this thread (on pages 2 and 3) have pointed out that this is not the case
This is what I was assuming as well. Have the gun die for the crits to be usable makes the gun mostly pointless for me. The odds of me surviving my gun after it's destroyed are remote. 99 percent of time I go out with the gun, or the gun is toasted before it kills anything.
just because YOU die 99% of the time when your gun does doesn't mean everyone ELSE does
it seems viable either way, just read the previous two pages or so
That's the point. It's a sidegrade that encourages a different play style, just like 95% of the other unlocks.
If it gave you crits as the gun was killing, it'd be a straight upgrade, regardless of the clip size, and it'd probably be stupidly over-powered.
I'm not all together sure why you are trying to save your gun with crits instead of saving it with your wrench
now you could, say, kill dudes who are en route to killing your gun, but at the same time, your gun should also be reasonably well-placed so as to do what it's meant to do
whether as an offensive gun (which means it's most effective when unpredictable but on the flipside has a low survival rate), which is basically harassment, delaying pushes, defending a forward teleporter, or taking pot shots
or as a defensive gun, which is basically up to using corners and ledges and your dispenser to your advantage
as Annie said, you could use the shotgun to ASSIST your sentry gun by taking out another approach angle to the gun itself, in which case yes crits would be useful, but you're trading away your gun's overall survivability anyway because there's going to be more than one approach to your gun
or something
I don't know if I'm making any sense, but basically, both interpretations have potential and god this argument is just going to keep on going every time someone new reads the OP and posts
But I'm not basing my understanding on the game theory or whatever.
To quote:
x Doesn't get random crits
>Instead, gets "Revenge Crits"
>Engineers get two crits for every kill their sentries racked up before destruction, and one crit for every assist!
>When Engineer's sentry is destroyed (either through enemy action or self-destruct), the Engineer receives bonus crits with the Frontier Justice
I understand the confusion is over what "bonus crits" means. But I don't see why they would emphasize "Revenge Crits" at the beginning and then describe concurrent crits. Hell, if you have concurrent crits, I don't know why you'd mention revenge crits at all. Also, both phrases "revenge crits" and "bonus crits" are circled. Which may be to indicate that they're the same thing.
Think of it like this:
REVENGE CRITS heading
I think it'd be pretty straight-forward if "bonus crits" just read "revenge crits" again. I'd wager it was originally written in complete, descriptive sentences that were very clear, and doing things like varying the term made sense, and then they truncated it down to short, conversational sentence fragments that don't read as well.
Geek, are you reading this? Tell Valve to hire me as an editor. There's also a typo in the L4D2 dev commentary closed captioning.
edit: That would also work, Zek. You can be the new graphics guy. I'll still be the editor though.
yeah the way Zek did it works better than rewording stuff
honestly the way people read it is different depending on which bullet comes first so really they just done fucked up the order
Now if you got the critz as the gun will killing dudes that would be a great defensive boost. Spy spy I caught would get a face full of critz shotgun.
You wouldn't want to, that's when you use your shotgun.
I believe the specific circumstance in which the new shotgun is useful is when you're playing engie for the offensive team, since you probably aren't going to get more than one or two kills before the front lines move up.
I wanna be able to play this again
I always have such trouble finding the SE thread, for some reason.
Probably because it's never named "Team Fortress" and never has brackets.
not saying I had a problem with them
or that anyone sane does
but you know
maybe ginger didn't wanna be whinged at
it's not like this in-joke is hard to understand
even if you know nothing about the game aside from its name
there was a lot of it in the whining forum
I didn't actually read any of the threads but I saw at least five different one pop up while the forum was active
I was all "man people really hate brackets"
Well, right now the order is chronological, so maybe it's other people's order that is done fucked up.
Or some way to stick sentry guns to walls and/or ceilings.
