So is there any way to get praise for Hell's Kitchen? I keep getting remarks about the shootout, but I don't know how to prevent that...
They start shooting before you even round the corner, so there's no way to prevent the battle. Other people's responses seem dependent on how many NSF you, personally, kill outside the hotel. Take down enough of them (usually about three or four) and you'll hear the troopers say something like "You took out the guy that got Jones. Serves him right, huh?" Too few and they'll jump straight to "We'll take it from here."
There may be other flags too, like whether you take the gas grenades, but I know that alone isn't enough either way. Apart from those troopers, you'll hear about it from Lloyd back at the base. JC's response to Manderley also changes accordingly.
As to your spoiler,
no, there isn't. Interestingly, there is dialog for Paul if you return without actually sending the signal - but after finding the evidence - that seems to indicate you still don't believe him, but nothing happens until you do.
So Paul wants me to send the signal from the NSF HQ. I killed errbody, turned all the dishes and go to the console and send the signal aaaand...nadda. Nothing happens. Is this a bug or did I miss something?
Hm. Weird. You killed everybody while they were green/friendly? Never done that before.
Its pretty neat. If the event works
Walter Simon's makes a remark about how none of the guards are responding to communique and assumes you killed/knocked them all out. He makes the typical threats about your kill switch and leaves.
They really did account for pretty much anything. Like the hidden "interrogation" scene that you can either watch or conduct.
Wait
You can conduct that?
Just get your ass downstairs before walton does.
Only in a game like Deus Ex can this happen.
As I recall, you can only enter when he does. You talk to one guy, he talks to the other one. Still, I loved when I found that out.

Is that a good head asplode or a bad head asplode?
Oh man, here's one of those moments that makes Deus Ex so great. So easy to miss, yet it adds a great dose of flavor:
If you go to Maggie Chow's apt, you'll see a balcony on the adjacent building. If you hop down and break in, you'll discover it belongs to Jock, and there's a message from Paul admitting he sent you and the other agents to die at the airfield
Actually, you don't need to beat Simons downstairs. If you get up next to the glass and aim right where it joins the wall (or floor, I can't remember), you can target the NSF guy and talk to him from outside the room.
Ten years on and still finding shit. God, I love this game.

I just got this today. Installing now. Are there any mods or stuff that I should bother getting? I see there's a few different hi res packs in the OP, are any in particular better than the others?

Is that conversation called 'Deus Ex - NSF Interrogation' on youtube? Simmons isn't in the room.
It's also possible to place objects infront of the door so that you can enter but simmons doesn't. Not to mention the use of cheats to just pass through the wall without him.

Well this is a steaming pile of turd. I installed it but it won't play. Just says "please insert the disc" when I go to run it, even though the disc is in the drive and it just installed off of the disc. Poop.

I'm not sure if we are allowed to talk about this, but it is legal so I am going to mention it anyway. Can you use some no-CD crack for it?
Perfectly legal way around that is to find DeusEx.ini in DeusEx\System, open it up in notepad, and look for a line that says "CdPath=D" (or whatever drive). Just delete the drive letter and leave it as "CdPath=" and you're good to go.
Going to do some Google detective work but thought I'd put it up here in case this is a known problem someone's heard of before.
edit: just tried a reinstall and it gets pretty much completed then gives me another error, which I actually got the first time I installed it but spazzed out and clicked it shut before I could read it.
I can't watch those gameplay videos at work, but if it has deep RPG and gameplay elements like the first game then I'm on board
If it neutered them like the second game did then it can GTFO
It doesn't show much in the way of RPG-ness, but neither would a gameplay trailer (keyword trailer!) for Deus Ex 1. You never really see stat pages and number work in trailers outside of Nippon Ichi games or something.
Hmm...IMDB lists Adam Jensen as being played by Elias Toufexis. Interesting. He was Andrei Kobin in Splinter Cell: Conviction, and Frederico Auditore in Assassins Creed 2. Definitely a Montreal based voice actor judging by his previous work.
Having only played the opening mission of Deus Ex, and all the way through Deus Ex 2... I don't give a fuck which game this is closer to in style.
I am getting such a MGS "evolved" vibe off this that it hurts. And I like it. The graphics are amazing. Maybe that's why I'm getting this vibe; it looks like they're doing the gameplay engine cutscene dance. I just hope this doesn't fall apart. I need something to look forward to other than RB3 and Castlevania: LoS.

And the only way to conduct it is to know whats coming and sneak in the door behind Simons.

The source media may be bad. If installing from a CD, try cleaning the CD to remove any dirt, check your CD drive, and try again.
I assume the two are connected. The CD is spotless so I dunno what's going on there.
Sorry for the late reply. Sounds like it's a single corrupted file. Pop the disc in, copy that same file from the same directory on the disc (\Maps\15_Area51_Page.dx), drop it into your install location and see if that works. If the error message changes to another file, try copying the CD to your computer and installing from the copy. If neither works, the disc itself might be bad.
Also, if you're running on Vista or later, you may want to grab the config tool. Basically you put it in place of DeusEx.exe in \system and it gives you finer control over graphic settings. Probably not related to the crash, but wouldn't hurt if you're running at a non-standard resolution.

Fuck I love Deus Ex.
This.
I'm sure it's meant to reveal some dark secret, but I think we all knew how Simon ran things as soon as we saw him for the first time.

It shows choice cuts of what we've seen in the leaked gameplay videos, but without the head of some dude and cam dreadful quality.

It's gravelly but doesn't sound like someone trying to do an obvious gravelly voice.
If thats makes sense.
You're saying that he sounds like solid snake circa MGS1, rather than MGS2 and beyond.

The world they created seems great as well. Don't seem to be any problems with that either.
Definitely something worthy of looking forward to I'd say.
