Since this is the recommend game thread, could anyone tell me how many of these do not need the top left button? My isn't working (well, erratically).
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story uses it occasionally, but it's not necessary. The problem with it is that it's used to get out of the special move demonstrations, and there's no other way out. My top left button works erratically as well, and I had to restart the game at one point (and avoided the special move demos afterward) because of it.
I also agree with the Clash of Heroes recommendations, with the caveat that it'll be coming out for XBLA / PSN soon, so if you'd rather have it on that setup, you may be better off waiting. Regardless of what system you get it for, though, it's a fantastic game. Definitely one of the best of 2009.
I was having L-button troubles, too. It would only work one in ten tries, and if it did work, it would double-hit or not hold or something. I spent a while searching to see if it was a common issue and if I could fix it myself and stumbled across someone saying that they fixed theirs by blowing on it. Sure enough, it worked on the first try. I guess it was dirt getting in between the contacts in there.
Here's how I did it:
Form a seal around the button with your mouth to ensure the air is going into the button cavity. Blow hard without spitting (I'm not responsible for anyone frying their DS circuitry from saliva). I would recommend turning it off completely, and if in doubt, don't turn on for a few minutes to make sure it is dry inside. I've done it to mine while the system was on and immediately resumed playing, but that's gotta be a bad idea. Or maybe there's no chance of hurting a DS from blowing on it, what do I know?
Remember how they would say that blowing on NES cartridges would actually mess them up in the long run? Was that a myth or did it hold some truth? It worked great at the time.
Yeah probably blowing into those shoulder buttons probably can cause damage over the long term... but it sure as hell works in the short term! Worked for me too. Then I sold it off and got a DSi.
I have my DS in my backpack for one measly road trip, and I take it out and the volume slider is stuck! Not completely stuck, but I have to use apply a lot more force to move it. I'm scared it will eventually break inward.
So are there any other really good RPGs for the DS out there?
Dragon Quest IX just came out and is awesome. You can also get Dragon Quest remakes for IV and V. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is also a good RPG but it's a monster catching type game if that bothers you.
If you don't care for DQ, the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles games are both good although I can only personally vouch for one of them. You can also get FF III and IV. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 is great, much better than the GBA one.
The World Ends With You is not only the best RPG on the system, it's possible the best GAME on the system as well. It's unique and fun.
There's a Chrono Trigger port.
Mario and Luigi Partners in Time, and Mario and Luigi Bowsers Inside Story are both humourous RPGs that I recommend.
Obviously there are Pokemon games for the DS. If you like Pokemon, they are great.

Disgaea DS is a pretty fun SRPG. It has sightly worse graphics than the PS2/PSP versions. But being able to use the second screen to see an overhead view of the battlefield is radical.
If you go for the castlevanias don't start with OoE. It is hard as balls in comparison to the other two. So much so that it might put you off of the other ones. Defiantly give it a try though as it is a great game.
Honeycomb beat is a decent puzzler I haven't seen mentioned. Youtube it for a gameplay video to get an idea of what its like.
So i picked up Hotel Dusk, Knights in Knightmare, and advance wars at the gamestop buy 2 get 1 free used sale.
Started with Knights in Knightmares.
What. The. Fuck.
Okay, i think im getting the hang of the general idea of the game...however I'm still confused as all hell.
1) First of all..can you move the knights on the battlefield? I'm on a level right now where two of the 3 knights are positioned in spots that for some reason can only turn two directions, and both are facing at a dead end square.
2) People appear on the tactical map before the fight begins that are not knights and when i touch them they say 'trade a key item for a weapon' yet when i try to drag a key item onto them, nothing happens. some of these people dont seem to have even that purpose, they just are there.
Devil Survivor is the best fucking SRPG ever made and if anyone says otherwise I will rip their eyes out and force-feed them to that person. That is all.
It's pretty good, but the best ever? No, I wouldn't go that far, if only because the positioning of your forces doesn't seem to matter that much. There isn't a single map where you have to defend certain sections of the map or take clever advantage of chokepoints or whatever.
Mostly you just rush up onto the field and start fighting.

Some knights can only attack up, others can only attack down. You need to use the right knight for the position you're in. Duelists can move upwards, while riders can move in any direction and can jump gaps but have to stay on the same height.
Each person on the map has a particular key item that only works for them. The items will say who they go with.

Check out the tutorials in Knights in the Knightmare. There are a ton of them and you should check them out, because there ain't no other game out there like it.

Still pretty good, though.
Pretty much agreed with this. The game was fun but was pretty damn easy. Dances also seemed incredibly overpowered (granted, they were kinda random... when you're casting 3 a turn something is bound to go in your favor).

I'm confused but I loved the first two fights. The only reason I haven't gotten further is that Order of Ecclesia has sucked me in all over again.
Thank you for getting me to take another look at Knights in the Nightmare. It looks very intriguing. I will probably pick it up at some point down the road.
Also, I just want to say Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes is fantastic. As is Puzzle Quest. Even Galactrix is pretty good.
as for some of the other titles mentioned in this thread: The World Ends With You seems pretty neat, but I just couldn't get into it. Hotel Dusk looked awesome, but the writing was boring. (and the main character was super annoying)

Anyone else here played Metroid Prime Pinball? Campaign isn't that long, so it's not a full price purchase, but while it lasts it is a very fun little game.
If you really want a challenge, I suppose you could play with earplugs and a blindfold.

Also for puzzle/adventure, the port of Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars is excellent.
