Help setting up a HTPC in another room.

EliteLamerEliteLamer __BANNED USERS regular
So here is the deal I don't have the money to buy another pc just to put in the room 30 feet away so I am running 35 feet of HDMI and TOSLINK to the family room. So I am looking for solutions on controlling my pc from the family room.. We all have smart phones so I was think of using boxee remote on android.. However is there anyway I can remote turn on my PC with my phone? Also make it where roommates cant access anything besides boxee.. Thanks..

You could set up your computer so it automatically logs on to a limited account, then have boxee load on startup for that account.

Turn it on remotely? Yes, it's possible.

How would I have it automaticly log onto a limited account and boxee? Sound complicated.

which version of windows are you running? The steps for creating a new user account and automatically logging in are slightly different depending on your version of windows.

EDIT: Alternatively, and I can recommend this enough, grab a USB gyration gyroscopic remote. They're RF and they work all around my house wonderfully.

Windows 7 Pro.. I know how to make new accounts but how would I limit access to one program..

I would pretty much want them to boot up the computer from their iphone or turn it on and it log right into Boxee.

The RF will go across most the house?

You could use a [strike]bluetooth mouse[/strike] (no gyroscopic ones exist? wtf?) or wiimote, but it looks like it's class 2 (10m range or about 32.8 feet). Using a class 1 dongle (this one, for example) with a class 2 device will probably give you enough range. (source)

There's plenty of tutorials for automatic logon, but it would be really spiffy if it only did the automatic login if you booted it with WOL. Unfortunately I have no idea if this is possible or would even work.
