Also, the Season 3 premiere episode where Maximal Optimus takes Autobot Optimus spark while he undergoes repairs. I would watch the part where Optimus Prime comes back to life for just a second then goes back to stasis over and over again. And when they found the origional Ark ship at the end of season 2, that was badass.

oh god guys you know i once tried to play Raksha's Decepticon Dominion MUD

oh christ it was so terrible

it was like someone with a fetish for Nazism created a game about a parallel universe where Nazis didn't just win the war, but that there was no war in the first place and no jews and the Nazis never did anything horrible ever, they just had a perfectly functional form of fascism that totally worked and nobody questioned.
and they took over because everyone naturally saw them as the best system of government.

And Raksha played like ten characters, including all the important ones like Megatron and Shockwave, often RPing with just herself, basically writing her own gay fanfics.

It was like thinking you were going to go play D&D with some dudes and then you step into their house and their entire living room is this crazy serial killer style shrine with newspaper clippings everywhere

    christ in heaven

i did not know she had enough internet presence to warrent an ED article.

I'm just going out on a limb here, but I don't think that slash fanfics about cartoons are actually about physical eroticism. Like, if it's about April from TMNT, OK, she's a redhead with big boobs, I can see it being about how she is actually a (fictional) person that you'd like to have sex with. But if it's a genderless giant robot? While there are probably some people who'd like to fuck cars or robots or whatever, I bet most of it is mom's-basement-dwellers who have made the physical transition to adulthood, but who have not been able to associate their sexuality with appropriate partners. You know, most of grow up and girls go from "people we know who may or may not be yucky" to "people we know who may or may not be sexy." These guys, I guess, just assign "sexy" to their fictional, robotic friends.

    I agree with this.
I generally consider most slash fiction as a sign of arrested development (and not the hilarious TV show). The person wants something emotionally involving and sexual in some vague fashion in their life, but they're so socially stunted they can't really make it work with real people. So instead, they fantasize about fictional charactes in such circumstances. Often, the actual characters themselves are irrelevant to the fantasy, which is why fanfiction websites have to have a written policy banning people from just re-posting the same fic over and over again with different character names.

I've read fanfiction that doesn't suck, but interestingly it's always stuff that isn't slash fiction. If there's any sort of sexual content or romance at all in it, it's written properly and included in the story in a way that makes sense, instead of being the story itself. Slash fiction seems to suck universally, and not just because it's not my particular taste. I've never seen any slash fiction where I could honestly say to myself "Yeah, it's not my thing, but it's written well."
    It isn't. It never is.

In fact, often times the people who write slash fiction, having no actual romantic experience themselves, write hilariously absurd and ridiculous dialogue or actions that no person with a mature, experienced understanding of sexuality or romance would consider hot.

However, there are also people who write ridiculous, absurd nonsense with the specific intent of trying to fulfill Rule 34 or freak people out. See: Magnum levamentum dolositas.

There's two things at work here that I can indentify.

-Familarity: Things that a person is more familar with can provide a greater sense of intimacy to some people. It's the difference between a random porn model and pictures of your girlfriend. So in some instances, people take things that they familar with (in this case, characters from their childhood/hobbies) and use them to construct their fantasies.

-Exoticism: Things that are harder to get or even completely out of reach can be more enticing to some people. You find this everywhere. I, myself, like redheads; partly due to the rarity. Some white men find asian women more attractive because they look more foreign than the woman their used to. Some people, especially ones constructing fantasies, extend this idea out to things that only exist in fiction.

EDIT: Anywho, can we go back to talking about transformers? :D

Here's something incredibly bizarre: Behold! Nike Transformers!

'course now wave 3 (Cliffjumper and Ramjet), the Battle for Cybertron City 2-pack (Ultra Magnus and Skywarp) and the G1 Soundwave reissue are starting to show up in stores. :P

What are your thoughts on them? All good? Bad? For someone who doesn't have to have them all, just a couple good ones, which should I get?

Optimus Prime ($20 Classics Voyager): Best G1 Prime ever, outside of Masterpiece/20th Prime. I have some niggles about the shell panels on his arms and how he has a two grills (one for his robot mode and one for his vehical mode, it's a pet peeve of mine) but those are litterally the only two things wrong with him and those are incredibly minor. He's a great figure with fantastic posability and his weaponry is awesome. (Big 'ol blaster and a sort of double barral sawed off shotgun sort of thing) and I love how they become parts of his vehical mode (wind vane and smoke stacks, respectively) Must buy, IMO.

Bumblebee ($10 Classics Deluxe): Like Prime I have some niggles about the arm panels, but beyond that, this is the best Bumblebee toy we've gotten. I wish he had a gun but the original bumblebee didn't, so eh. He DOES come with a pretty cool jetpack thing that turns into a jetski he can tow in vehical mode. Nicely posable as well. Another must buy, IMO.

Hot Rod ($10 Classics Deluxe): Has a slight posability gaff in his arms which are hinges, so they have no mid-bicept swivle and look a bit detaches when bent upwards. Otherwise this is a very nice version of Hot Rod (Or Rodimus as the trademark hounds have us call him.) He has a sping-loaded missle launcher that becomes a rocket booster in car mode (complete with a blue flame/missle) and he has decent posability outside of the arms. Interesting transformation as well, though he doesn't come all together in vehical mode (there tends to be gaps where the panels line up, especially where his hotrod exhaust pipes are. Has a flip out "communicator" on his hand which is very obviously the buzzsaw he used in the movie. I say he's a worthy buy.

Megatron ($20 Classics Voyager): While it's incredibly awesome that Megatron is a gun now, and this figure gets brownie points for that, it does have a few issues. I don't mind that he doesn't look like a real gun (Rather he looks like a Walther P-38 had sex with a Nerf Maverick), and I usually just flip the toes out on the handle part of the gun and display him as an anti-air turret. In Robot mode he's hampered by a few things. First of all his big green wings make him hard to get into good dynamic poses with out him falling over, and the canon on his arm also makes that difficult for the same reason, as well as bumping into his wings and making it difficult to get the arm into a good position. It's especially annoying that his hands have no swivle so you either have to have the canon on the underside of his arm, or have his hand sideways or updside down. In robot mode he's definantly new territory and while some may not like the green and purple it doesn't bother me. THe transformation is very cool, even though he's bit of a shellformer. I'd say he's an acceptable buy, if only because he's megatron as a gun again, and Prime needs a foil. :D

Starscream ($10 Classics Deluxe): Like Bumblebee and Prime, simply the best G1 Starscream figure outside of the Masterpiece line (and I'd argue it's a better G1 SS than hte masterpiece one, but that's neither here nor there.) He pretty much doesn't do anything wrong, great transformation, looks damn near perfect in robot mode. He simply IS G1 starscream. The only two issues I have is that the arm cannons are place a bit high which interfers with the wings (the wings move back so you can still pose them but it looks a tad weird) and that he has limited head mobility due to having the nosecone sticking out of the back of it. Still, a fantastic figure and I'd say he's a must buy.

Astrotrain ($10 Classics Deluxe): Very much a surprise, not only is he based on a more gimmicky character than the rest of the line, they mainted that gimick as best as possible. He robot mode he is a fantastic reinterpretation of G1 Astrotrain and his shuttle mode is awesome. His train mode is a bit wonky, being the mode that most suffered, but it's still passable. His gun has no features, but can be mounted on the train or on the underside of the shuttle. He as decent posability and aside from his the train front halfs frequently falling back onto his hands, he doesn't have any realy problems. (Well, his head is hard to get out of the compartment sometimes). I'd say he's a worthy buy.

Mirage ($10 Classics Deluxe): The only deluxe autobot car who made it to classics, Mirage is quite frankly an amazing figure; he has a VERY unique transformation and simply a crazy ammount of posabilty. On top of this, he's very light and can be balanced in a crazy ammount of poses, which combined with his posability means you can go hog wild. He weapon is just a piece of plastic that becomes hte front of the F1-ish racer, but that's okay. He has a bit of a hunchback look to him and he's VERY lithe, but ultimately his good points make up for his bad points. I'd say he's also a must buy.

Grimlock ($10 Classics Deluxe): One of the weaker figures of the line. His T-rex form is a bit odd. He had ginormous hips and low posability, outside of his tail which has a pointless ammount of poseability. His transformation is fairly unique but it gives his robot mode a very different appearance than he had in G1. His shoulders don't peg down in robot mode so he's a bit floppy as they tend to detach. Grimlock comes with a spring loaded missle launcher that has a sword bayonet (but sadly, it can't be wielded like a sword) and his tail becomes a not-so-convincing whip. the gun can be mounted on his back in dino mode. Ultimately, he's kind of an average figure next to the other classics, but he's not terrible. I'd say he's a passable buy.

The Ultimate Battle ($20 Two-pack of deluxes and a DVD):
-Prime: By far the worst figure in the classics line. He's a recreation of the original altmode, but the failed misrably at it. the truck bed is too long with his upper thighs exposed, his head is VERY visable in vehical mode, and the whole thing just looks poorly put together; definantly not a convincing disguise. In addition, his truck bed is floppy and doesn't lock down, so all the posability in his legs tends to make it mushy. He has a pretty intresting sping-loaded transformation though, and his robot mode is far far better than his vehicle mode. Very envocative of G1 prime and looks great among the other classic deluxes. Some people don't like the size of his eyes, saying it looks like he's surprises, but it doesn't bug me. He has a gun that goes to being (I guess) a turret on his truck bed, to a sort of tommy gun. He has a "power punch" gimmick activated by a button on his back, but it just makes his torso spin around when not in use so I typically put the button back to lock his uppper torso in place.

-Megatron: This megatron becomes a G2 Megatron-inspired green, four tread tank with a spinning turret and a smaller turret gun. He has a fairly simple, if not interesting, transformation. The smaller turret gun can be wielded as a weapon and the tank turret barral becomes his right arm. Sadly, this means he has no right hand. He has decent posability and looks good next to the other deluxes, but his gimpy hand (Done so that he has a spinning blade gimmick) impacts the quality of the figure.

-DVD: Just a quick run through of general transformers concepts using footage from the Unicron Trilogy (Armada, Energon and Cybertron) narrated by that continuities Optimus prime. Covers the Autobots, the Decepticons, scanning things, transformation, the war.. all the stuff you probably already know about.

On a whole, I'd say that this set can be skipped unless you really want some deluxe sized Prime and Megatron figures to display with your other deluxes. The DVD is pretty worthless, Prime is a pretty lame figure (unless you just leave him in robot mode) and while I like Megatron, he's definantly not the best Megatron figure we've seen.

Man, ever since a few weeks ago when I had to go shopping for Ms. Shim's 8 year old brother's birthday, and bought him that Prime/Megatron battlepack, I've been on like this Transformers craze, and this thread is just pushing it further.

I went and bought the 20th Anniversary special ed. DVD a while back and then bought that 12inch talking 20th Anniversary Prime, I have this cash I should be saving to go to Disney World with her family this summer but now I just want to buy my favorite Tranformers I used to have that I'm pretty sure my mom sold in a garage sale when I was in middle school.

Really the only ones I really miss, like really really miss are the original: Optimus Prime, JetFire, HotRod, BumbleBee, Shockwave, all the Dinobots, all the Constructacons and Blaster... I loved Blaster

She views Soundwave as a protective "father" of his tapes. Like he *really* CARES for tape-transformers. Like a father. A GAY father. "Cries and screams are music to my ears" was his tech spec (that silly thing on the back of the box that tells you about the personality of the toy you just bought). Of course, that didn't reflect his TRUE personality, so she rewrote it to be "The secrets of the universe reveal themselves to those who listen".
