Having seen no love for Perpetuum on here I figured I'd provide an intro. So here it is.

BACKGROUND STORY

In the not-too-distant future, a strange anomaly opens the gates of the universe for humans. With this new technology, energy, information and atomic size objects can be transported to anywhere in space.

The most intriguing of all new discoveries is an Earth-like planet, where humanity discovers a new source of energy, vital to its unbroken advancement. However, this planet is inhabited by a synthetic, robot-like life form. Their technology and resources are the goal of humanity's new conquest.

Players may take part in various areas of the project. They may fight on the front lines for new territories, develop the already established infrastructure, trade goods or services, or even set their own goals and set up their own coprorations.

FEATURES

Persistent universe
Every player is a part of one server, one scene, one storyline.

Formable planet surface
The whole terrain can be formed by military, agricultural or even aesthetic aspects.

Dynamically changing vegetation
The flora is changing perpetually, its parameters can be modified by the player, so even huge plantations - containing useful raw materials - can be established.

Time-based character development
No need for 'grinding'. You can be qualified despite you're not playing, since players get XP even if they are not logged in.

Active raw material simulation
The position of liquid materials change during exploitation. Controlled algorythms manage the respawn of raw materials.

Real-time, asynchronous combat
No turns, therefore no time restrictions of combat moves.

More than 30 various robots, hundreds of equipment items
Robots can be specialized in several kind of operations or tactics. The only barrier is your imagination.

Self-controlling economy
Exploitation, refinement and even manufacturing are all controlled by the players. The speed and efficiency of fabrication processes can be developed throughout the game.

Social networks
A complex corporation founding and management system is available for players, with additional communication systems in- and outside the game.

Career centre
Several missions can be undertaken on the numerous Syndicate departments. These varied missions provide challenge for every sort of specialties.

If you want, sign up for the beta. http://www.perpetuum-online.com/Registration:Beta_registration

Having played EVE for over five years now I have definitely found many similarities between the two but I still have high hopes. I've also been playing the beta and found it very entertaining. Perpetuum is pretty much giving me everything I wanted out of EVE that EVE wouldn't give to me...and then some.

So....thoughts/comments anyone?

Is that EVE groundwar thing? That's connected to EVE?

No, thats Dust514, this isn't made by CCP.

Their pages don't describe the gameplay at all. Is it like a standard MMO with mechs? Click on target press 1?

All their media they have up makes it look like Mechwarrior which would be enough to make me give it a try.

    Definitely sounds sexy.

    Found youtube video:

    Hrm...gameplay seems...EVE'ish? I don't know.

I tried playing this for a couple days before becoming bored out of my mind. It's literally a less polished eve, with mechs.

The same terrible UI, mind numbing pve, and recycled art assets. I guess if you really hate spaceships it's worth a try, but it definitely wasn't for me.

Negative. It's an MMO all its own. Not related to EVE but uses many many similar elements to EVE. I believe you're thinking of DUST514. http://www.dust514.org/

Is this the game where I thought somebody did a screencap of EVE, photoshopped out the background and pasted the Mechwarrior 2 box art in?

I think the last time I saw it it even had exactly the same hud and overview boxes.

From those videos, fights look exactly like EVE, so I'm gonna assume you move by double-clicking on the ground and there are buttons for orbiting and approaching your target. Words cannot express my horror.

You can still control with W,A,S,D. Fights are similar though :?

The guys making this are probably the handful of people who play eve for the internet spaceships and not the forum posting.

I think I'd heard about this about a year ago or so. Isn't this being developed by ex-CCP guys, or guys who were/are huge Eve fans? Perhaps ones that got butthurt about something? I don't remember, but I do remember it looking like a shittier version of Eve with mechs.

I'll try anything that mimics Eve's strong points, but I'm going to wait for this to get out of beta. The thread on SA says this still needs a lot of work.

This reminded me of EvE if it were put in a blender with Spore and Mechwarrior and set to frappe. And had the little internet spaceship cherries picked out.

Not interested, but the concept of a Mechsuit based MMO of any kind has a large amount of potential if done right, in my opinion. This however doesn't appear to be it. I mean come on... giant mechs that don't make the ground shudder and have dirt fly into the air every time your foot hits the ground? Where's the passion?

I just got into the beta yesterday and played most of the night. Honestly I really enjoyed it, but I also really like playing EVE. It's pretty rough still but I didn't find any game breaking bugs in the first few hours which is more than I can say about most other MMO betas I've tried. Overall I think it was alright, I'll have to play more before I can decide if I would actually pay for it though. It really is similar to EVE but mechs instead of spaceships, so if you don't like actually playing EVE (versus the bitter vet forum posting) then you won't be interested in this game at all.

The one huge improvement they could make to Eve would be finding a way to allow fights between players to happen more often. Time zone wars end up pretty yawn. Thoughts, Selecta?

its kind of hard to get rid of time zone issues without splitting servers, even then a few assholes will be on a complete opposite schedule from the rest of the server, and you will be lucky enough to fight them.

What I mean more is that in Eve all resources are super ultra precious valuable, and all fights around them are mega important. Eve has gradually made wolf packing harder and harder with cloaking, etc. I think the game idea would be improved by more easily being able to get into skirmish engagements.

You mean make large scale fleet fights more common because of sov or small gang style skirmishes, like roams? Everyone knows that the current sov system plus how poorly the server handles 1000 people in system has all but killed meaningful territory warfare. Roams are still pretty common from what I've seen. You just have to make sure you don't have too many people if you really want to get a fight. I don't know what could be done to break up the blob or nothing mentality, probably something drastic that would piss people off.

And first page we've derailed the thread into EVE discussion MKII. \o/

So for content, can anyone in the Perpetuum beta that has seen some pvp or the different sec levels give an idea what it's like? I've only seen the starting zone for where my character ended up, so I've only farmed drones in a noob robot and looked around the market.

Oh no worries, it was bound to happen. Just thought first page was funny. I haven't seen how pvp and soveriegnty works in Perpetuum yet, hoping someone can come in and shed some light. I too would like to see lots of smaller scale fights happening in the open world, rather than in some instanced battleground type of bullshit. Also when did you register for beta? I think I put in my app on Sunday afternoon and was in by Wednesday. From what I've seen, they're literally taking EVERYONE who applies now.

I didn't notice goons but there's a Kugutsumen pub channel. The help channel is literally an EVE discussion too, it's pretty funny. I'm gonna play a bunch tonight so I'll relay anything really cool I find.

Edit: Yeah, goons dabbled in Perpetuum for a little bit but didn't really stick with it. Their corp is called Awful Industries and seem to be largely inactive. They have a pretty decent thread on SA. I'd link it but that site is blocked at work v0v. Check the first page in the mmo subforum.

I'm pretty addicted to this game right now.

It's fairly cool and has a lot of potential to be something special. Plus, it's a time-based skill progression I can start at release, so I won't feel like I could never catch up (like all those times I attempted to get into EVE after the fact).

Hmm. Logged in and did the 5 minute tutorial, which really didn't tell me anything other than:

This game ripped Eve off for a WHOLE lot of stuff, and then they unnecessarily complicated parts of Eve that were already complicated, like mining.

I have no freaking idea what to do once I figure the tutorial. Looks like Eve, though.

I haven't found a whole lot to do, honestly. There's assignments (missions) or straight up ratting. I made a character that is full on combat so no mining or industry for me (not that I would anyway). Kind of boring until they add some more content.

I only got a basic movement tutorial. Figured out how to take missions, swapped the mining thing for another machine gun, and went after a low level hunting quest.

    Got raped by robots.

    So confused.
