It's mostly just darker lyrical matter. Musically they're still very similar.

Shoegaze isn't so much a genre as a style.

It comes from the fact that shoegaze bands, while playing live, are so shy and introverted and deep stare at their shoes while playing, lest they be overwhelmed by a half-empty room of friends and somehow become sell outs.

As is my understanding.

It and mumblecore hang out on the weekends. Or plan to, at least, but bail at the last second.
