So M. Night Shyamalan made a movie based on Avatar: The Last Bender so terrible that my two-year-old called it "dumb" and a "bad movie" and demanded to leave.
Also, the original animated Nickelodeon series is bad-ass.
Also, there's a new series coming down the pike called The Legend of Korra, I guess, that takes place after the events of the original A:TLA series.
Let's talk about all of this stuff!
I submitted an entry to Lego Ideas, and if 10,000 people support me, it'll be turned into an actual Lego set!If you'd like to see and support my submission, follow this link.
I watched the Roku ep the other night with the lava bending. I don't really understand why that's a combo of fire and earth bending though. Shouldn't it be water and earth bending? It's liquid fucking rock!

I'm thinking more the type of moves you'd need to effectively manage liquid rock, and water bending is going to be infinitely more suited to the task than fire bending would be.

i still don't know what the hell he spent 150 mil on. Like seriously...wtf? The casting was cheap and the effects were mediocre. He sure as hell didn't spend it on consultants so then what?

Well regardless of the state it's still Earth by the shows definition
Arguably yes Waterbending style would make it easier to handle but Waterbending also requires the liquid to cover parts of your body or at least be in close proximity.
So yeah that's probably not a good long term solution

What I don't get is that ordinary Aang was more than capable of shutting down a volcano in Season 1. So... Roku is either a weakass Avatar or consistency was lost somewhere.

Not every eruption is the same. The one Roku was dealing with was considerably more violent. Also Aang wasn't trying to shut down the volcano, just deflect the lava from the Village, which I reckon requires less effort.

Roku was like 80.
Aang had help too. Not a fuckstick that wanted him dead.

Honestly one of the few points of contention with the plotting of the series is why Sozen did what he did.
He gives the reason
Spreading the prosperity of the Fire Nation to the rest of the world.
but since there is seemingly almost no conflict of any sort in the other three nations it just makes that reason seem really silly.
Then they don't even have the decency to show him plunging into madness or some other decent excuse like a minor border skirmish or civil unrest or anything.
In the end Roku was more important than him and he could not stand for that. It drove him mad that somebody born his lesser was now literally the most important being in the world
Or at least that's how I saw it.

Did Roku ever hit the Avatar state? I know Kyoshi did.
I think learning the Avatar State is part of normal Avatar training, usually after learning all the elements. It's just in the time Aang was around, there weren't many people who both knew how and were willing to teach him.
Yeah, I think Roku could've gone Avatar state, he just didn't too often.
While Kyoshi went Avatar state to cook food.
Oh some mortal dude is standing 2 feet away, I'm a super-awesome martial artist and can bend all four elements, and could probably just burn him to a crisp right here? Probably best to go all avatar state and make a fucking island.
Roku goes Avatar State while trying to stop the volcano, doesn't he? I remember because it really confused me. The guru said in order to achieve it at will you had to (among other things) throw away all your connections to the material world, and Aang refused because he liked Katara too much. And yet, Roku is sharing a bed with his wife one minute, and goin' all glowy-eyed the next.

He can have a wife or a kid or whatever, but once the point comes that your duty as an Avatar conflicts with your devotion to anything else, your duty as Avatar must take precedence. That's actually a fairly common discipline in many areas.
Aang also kinda cheated that rule too by just, like, temporarily not caring about her whenever he needed to go into it.
I can accept that the lightning bolt fucked up his chakras so it didn't matter whether or not he had the higher ones cleared, but that doesn't really excuse when he does it at the very end.

That didn't seem to be what the guru was saying. He told Aang that he had to give up everything that ties him to the material world so that he could become one with the cosmos.

It's possible that the guru was just wrong. Giving up all his connections to the mortal world would make the Avatar a little pointless. "Oh, the Fire Nation is starting some shit and killing everybody? Meh. I'm gonna be communing with the cosmos over here. Try and keep the screaming down, alright?"

There's little reason to believe that he's an unreliable source of information.
Also it obviously meant throwing away personal connections
I figured him going Avatar at the end was him inherently knowing he had no chance without it. As in it came about as it always did to insure his survival. He gained control again by not losing his resolve to not kill.
Roku was also the one that told Aang that getting killed in the Avatar state would end the cycle. So chances are he saw going Avatar as much a risk as it was a plus. Kyoshi may have had a different opinion on the risk.

Maybe the Guru just told him what he needed to hear?
The bolded part is what I was referring to. Destroying the navy would have been awesome.
Instead, the ships just turn around and slowly leave and the wave slowly sinks away.
Yeah, I was exaggerating a bit, I guess.
I actually saw the last two eps of Book One just after seeing the film, so I got to see Bad-Ass Monster Aang after Gay-Ass Wave Ang. What really struck me was that the period in the movie corresponding to the last two eps of the season was probably just about as long. But while the series had good pacing and negotiated numerous sub-plots and was awesome, the film somehow handled far less and seemed alternately rushed and plodding. Instead of having an awesome fight between Zuko and Zhou, they had Zuko stare at Zhou menacingly and then wander off. Instead of having the force of the ocean fucking up Zhou for messing with the spirits, four random water benders come over and drown him while he just stands there? WTF?
It's like MNS was trying to screw it up.

Chemical composition supersedes state of matter?
Waterbending involves ice, too!
And now I'm utterly ashamed of myself.
When did this happen?
That's... That's pretty bad.
And I applaud your child's taste in film.
You mean a
Soquid, right?
It's ung's super move in the movie for saving the northern water tribe in the movie.
As opposed to bending the water to turn into a Giant water monster that fuck's the fire nation up hardcore.

Man was all "Hmm, I like nature and I like fire. I know, a volcano would be the perfect spot for our Summer villa."

Kyoshi: Yeah, sure invade the continent, I'll just be chilling on my island.
Chin: ... What island?
Kyoshi: *Avatar State* This one.

What could possibly cause a seven-foot person to come up with that theory?
