As a big fan of the original for Dreamcast, I purchased Hydro Thunder Hurricane with delight. The second game in the Summer of Arcade lineup, it's just as sweet as the original, with some new boats, maps and modes.
You FREAK OF NATURE!
Your features start off very limited, but you can earn points by winning in multiplayer as well. There are four different kinds of single player races.
1. Race. Fight for 1st place, but getting in the top 3 earns you credits that automatically go to new boats, maps and modes.
2. Ring Master: Go through the hoops to add boost. Missing one yields a 1 second penalty and removes all your boost.
3. Gauntlet: Go through a map as planes drop dozens of explosive barrels that can instantly kill you, costing you time.
4. Championship mode.
As for how the new game handles, here is all fans need to know.
1. For better or worse, Mighty Hull is gone. You no longer gain invulnerability and can send opponents flying after using boost.
2. You now have a jump button (oh thank god.) For those who don't know, you had to do something like Brake/buffer into accellerator. It was awkward on Dreamcast, and IMPOSSIBLE in the arcade cabinets.
3. Being behind a boat can boost your speed from less drag. The visual effect is a little distracting though.
4. Items never go away regarless of laps. Nice!
5. Secret items are littered throughout, and using secret routes can still yield rewards. You can even collect secret items in multiplayer! The announcer lampshades them. (
You picked up....something!)
6. Secret inputs for a boost start still exist, even in multiplayer. Use them! And learn them! Because I don't remember them!
I just dived straight into multiplayer and have unlocked a lot of boats. Anyone else tearin' up the waves?
Cosmetic changes?
1. The soundtrack is weak as shit. But I don't really care.
2. The Midway boat for beginners is now the Vector. (RIP Midway.)
3. Thunder Park's spiritual sequel is now Tsunami Park. The audience and announcer are Japanese.
4. You can unlock different paint schemes for your boats. Nice ones.
And YES there are new maps. This is in fact a sequel.

I mean, I still have my dreamcast..but...this way I won't have to plug it in..
Aw no mighty hull
Two days ago, Mrs. Tux asked me:
'Do you remember that boat game we used to play?'
'...you mean...Hydro Thunder?'
'Yes, do you have it hooked up?'
I did not.
I still remember the first time I played it in the arcade. My friend introduced me to it and we went through a round of races. The problem was that I think he was being nice and giving me a lead. So it'd go like this:
<I'm ahead before the last mega-drop to the last flat>
<jump>
'Wooooooooo! I'm going to win this one!'
<silence>
'You're flying over my head right now, aren't you.'
'WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!'
'Son of a...'
And he'd drop in front of me and beat me by a second.

Just missing one in the first race.
So far the online races have been a blast. Lots of close eight player races and tight finishes. So fuck land indeed. And fuck IGN's bullshit 5.5 out of 10 review. That is goddamn drug induced.
I contacted the amusement machine company that placed it there (an easy thing to do in rural Iowa since there was one, the same one that puts old shitty arcade games in laundromats), and asked if it was for sale. They would have sold it for $550 but I just didn't have the money. Of course I do now, but the closest one is five hours away and $1700. So. Some day.
My life would be complete.
I still have my 64 cartridge, and a god-awful port of HT on the GameCube ... it's in some racing game collection. Still a horrible port ... sound is off on parts, the game jumps around like no other. The other day I hit that ice-tube in Artic Circle, and inside I managed to make the boat do a barrel roll. As soon as I finished said roll, the game paused for a second, and dropped me at 0MPH in front of the tube. Fuck. I've also managed to get going so fast on that tube that the game will 'pick up' my boat and drop it still in the water while everyone else flies by.
Still love the game. One day I WILL have an arcade cabinet of this. Oh, and it's easy to do a boost-jump on the arcade games ... at least, I never had an issue with it.

"Oh, every week there's a canal. Or an inlet. Or a fjord."
"Quiet! I will not hear another word against the Boat."
But really, Tidal Blade is the best boat. Good ol' Tidal Blade.

Do they also have the boat from Thunder in Paradise?
I really liked that show for some reason. Hulk Hogan can do no wrong.
I have to admit, it doesn't quite stand up to the original, somehow. It feels kind of devoid of life, but it has its own soul at the same time. It's more like a tribute to Hydro Thunder, rather than a sequel.
The announcer was a slight disappointment, as I was expecting super crazy announcer. Him saying Tidal Blade (my favorite boat) was rather disappointment.
The handling was definitely a strange thing to get used to. Before, you could turn, and actually turn. (Well, aside from Cutthroat and Rad Banana Physics.)Now, it's like the boat slip and slides, then actually makes the action of changing direction. It was really strange, but once I played a few times through, I managed to understand it well enough to not suck. Which wasn't saying much, since the demo only has you play on Novice. Having the different difficulty settings is...flexible. On one end, it makes it so new people and returning oldies, like myself, can come to understand what is changed. On the other end, Novice is super casual mode, and it seems like a lot of the stuff requires you to go back to a lot of the difficulties and do special things. Either way, it might attract a greater audience.
I plan to buy this, I think it earned my money; hoping for a return of Tiny Tanic.
Also, getting first place with Rad Hazard when everyone is Razorback=feels good man.
Will probably get this game first chance I get.
I think we all stopped reading IGN after the Blur review.
I downloaded the demo and thought it was ok. Nothing special.
But then it seems like the online multiplayer is where its at for good times, and I liked the Dreamcast version a lot, so maybe I'll use up my 10 minutes of online today and it will sway me to purchase.
Well I do like their Brutal Legend review: They played the multiplayer like they're supposed to.
And that Blur review? IGN Uk turns around and gives it a 9/10 like a week later. Ridiculous. But lately they've been reviewing every aspect like there supposed to...and spouting out nonsense regardless. The podcasts reveal they've all lost their minds.

Super Excellent Tsunami Park Explosion!
Well, when there's only a limited number of sites you can view on a work computer, you take what you can get.
Even if it happens to be terrible reviewers.
I know they are known for sometimes less-than-stellar reviews, but man, that's completely baffling to me.

They complained about loading times. Yeah. They didn't play the thing.
IGN is the lowest outlier on Metacritic for this game.
My favorite boat is the Razorback. Slices the waves like Gangbusters. I'm a vet, so I jumped straight to advanced boats as soon as I could.
What a pile of bollocks! It literally sounds like they played a different game than the one I'm enjoying.
Yeah it's pretty obvious they either didn't play it or that they played a super early build. I was able to tell the inaccuracies in the review just from the demo.
EDIT: Just noticed the review was written by a silly goose who rather ruined my enjoyment of a certain "Dudes who used to be at 1up" podcast...I'm suddenly not surprised by the score.

And that it looked boring both graphically/set-piece wise.
Mmm-hmm.
(And for the record I believe they played it, but have poor taste.)
Looks like Sonic 2k6 just got knocked off its pedestal.
It's time to bring down the thunder brother
I never get tired of leaping into the air and boosting to overtake someone at the finish line.
I bought the game yesterday, and as soon as I unlocked Rad Hazard, I came to love it. The handling isn't even that big of a problem, in fact I think it's an advantage. You can be in the air before a corner, turn to match the corner, boost before you hit the water and you're already past it, and three other boats.
Winning in a race that have mostly Razorbacks with Rad Hazard is fun too.
My other favorite boat is from the earlier days, Tidal Blade. Thing was fast and just cut through waves. The air handling is really nice too, though it's not very stable. It can get thrown around pretty easily. At least it's durable, unlike Rad Banana Physics.
On a related note, Saturn X skin for Rad Hazard get! I was a little discouraged when I'd already been through all the shortcuts and still had several tokens to go in Area 51, but the placement of the last couple I needed was quite clever.
Also, I'm glad you can decide what lobby you want to join, because I've entered a few lobbies where the host just keeps picking Area 51 and never changes (why it isn't random with a vote to skip option...) and the apparant lack of a countdown timer allowing people to just stay on 'Not Ready' for as long as they like is giving Live pubs too much credit.
Other than that, I'm having a blast.
Not missing out on TOO much.
I mean, you probably wanted to win that race, but what can you do?
