Adding a RAID 1 for data on a XP system (a chicken and egg issue it seems)
After the annoying death of a hard drive I used for data storage I have decided to replace the dead drive with two drives i RAID 1.
Creating the RAID in BIOS was no problem however when moving on the system simply resets shortly after showing the Windows XP logo. If I disable the RAID I can boot XP and use the two new hard drives as individual drives just fine but that was not the plan.
Motherboard Gigabyte P55-UD6
1 SATA drive with XP system on
2 SATA drives meant to form a RAID 1
1 IDE DVD-R drive
XP SP3 with all updates. Runs fine otherwise.
The motherboard offers RAID with both the Intel chipset and with a seperate controller (JMB362) and there are 6+4 SATA connectors + 2 eSATA ones meaning there are a lot of combinations possible. So far all my SATA drives are connected using the chipset SATA connectors.
I have tried installing Intel RAID software/drivers on XP in order to fix the problem but am told my system does not meet the requirements. From what I found with google it is beacuse the Intel RAID software/drivers can not be installed unless RAID is active. In other words it seem I can't boot Windows without the drivers and I can not install the drivers when RAID is not enabled :-(
Surely there must be a trick or is it really needed to make a full reinstall of XP?
During XP install, it will prompt you at some point to press F6 to install raid and other drivers. It gives you a relatively short window to press the key before it moves on (~10 secs?). Unfortunately, this means you have to babysit your system as it loads XP.
If you don't install the drivers then, the RAID won't set up properly.
Conversely, you can follow a multitude of tutorials for slipstreaming the drivers onto an XP install CD and do it that way. Either way you're going to have to reload XP to get it all to work.
E: Have you thought of using a backup program such as Acronis to image your system regularly?

I thought the wind might blow that way. Maybe this is where I move on to Windows 7 since then I will at least get a little more from the time spend.

Good point. The thing is the data is really not that important or irreplaceable so I want something which ads a little security and is invisible (as in no work required).
I thought of something. Maybe I could move my boot drive to the alternate controller and do a successful boot from there even while the chipset controller is in RAID mode. I shall try and report back.
Moving my boot drive to the other controller on the motherboard and enabling RAID on the Intel controller let me boot XP and install the Intel storage drivers+software. I'm formatting the RAID right now :-)
Now I wonder if I should leave the boot drive on the JMB362 controller or move it back to the Intel controller. Any idea what brings the best performance? (Boot drive is a Intel SSD 80 GB drive).
