The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I've used GAIM on nearly every computer and laptop I've been on. I can't stand to not have my name alias dealies. But I recently got a laptop for school. It's great and everything works fine.
But GAIM won't connect. I even turned off the windows firewall.
It's not the router - its wired to the same one my PC is, which GAIM still works fine on.
I even installed the new beta which won't connect either.
I haven't been able to use the new beta at all (won't even start). Do the standard clients (msn, aim, etc.) connect? A friend of mine is having a similar trouble with his work firewall. He can connect with all the official clients but not with Gaim. You might try Trillian as well to see if you have any better luck.

I'm at school right now (and the wireless network here has been offline) so I can't try anything till later tonight. I had tried Trillian a long time ago. The thing I really liked about GAIM was just how incredible simple and bland it was, the whole alias thing, and the tabs. I know it has tabs - but if it doesn't have the other things I really don't even want to try it.
But what's the deal with the connection issue though?
I was thinking today that the newer verions might use a differant port that my router doesn't have open. Isn't there a website out there that offers older versions of programs? I know a friend of mine us to use if for older versions of AIM back in the day.
Sometimes ISPs / network admins block certain ports (or allow only certain ports through). You could ask your ISP for info on that.
Simpler alternative would be to use something like PingFu - http://www.artofping.com/ - free beta basically tunnels blocked ports - use it when on the move and I'm at places where the wireless has some port blocks or some censoring of some sort. It works almost as well as a direct connection...pretty cool.
That way I get to keep my PSI [Jabber Client] rather than having to use Trillian [ugh!]....and some places, even Trillian won't work with the ports blocked.

Anyone know anything on that?
